  • Trois semaines après le massacre de Jean Rabel, les médias indépendants sont toujours interdits d’accès dans la zone concernée. Jean Dominique discute des circonstances et des facteurs qui ont rendu le massacre possible avec Michèle Pierre-Louis (qui est allée visiter la zone en tant que membre de la mission Alfa) et l’agronome Chavannes Jean-Baptiste (le fondateur du Mouvement Paysan Papaye). Pierre-Louis dit qu’il a remarqué l’animosité qu’entretiennent les paysans de la région de Lakoma envers l’équipe de missionnaires de Père Jean-Marie Vincent, mais explique que cette animosité est le fruit de manipulations de la part des grands propriétaires terriens pour diviser les paysans et créer un climat de désunion. Inquiets à l’idée de voir leur influence diminuer et de perdre leurs terres à la suite de la chute de Duvalier le 7 février 1986, ils ont manipulé les paysans de la région de Jean Rabel en les montant les uns contre les autres, gagnant la faveur de certains groupes de paysans en promettant de redistribuer les terres à leur avantage. Selon Jean-Baptiste, ils ont engendré une situation dans laquelle « les petits chiens mangent les petits chiens, des paysans tuent d’autres paysans pareils à eux ». D’après lui, les propriétaires terriens associés à certaines radios et à des membres de l’église catholique font circuler des rumeurs selon lesquelles Père Jean-Marie serait un communiste et que des communistes vont s’emparer des terres, des maisons et de toutes les possessions des paysans. Les divisions au sein de l’Eglise Catholique (entre la hiérarchie traditionnelle et réactionnaire de l’Eglise et les « ti legliz » prêchant une théologie de libération et promouvant les droits des paysans pauvres et dépossédés de leurs terres) sont aussi coupables et, selon Jean-Baptiste, l’Eglise devrait être tenue pour responsable.   • Three weeks after the massacre at Jean Rabel, the independent media is still forbidden to visit the area, so Jean Dominique sits with Michèle Pierre-Louis (who had recently visited the region as part of Mission Alpha) and agronomist Chavannes Jean-Baptiste (the founder of the Peasant Movement of Papaye) to discuss the aftermath of the massacre and the factors underpinning it. Pierre-Louis observes a great deal of hostility toward Jean-Marie Vincent and his missionary team among the peasants of Lacoma. But this hostility is the product of intentional strategy, one that the local landowners adopted when Tèt Ansanm’s ideology called into question existing social structure. These landowners — threatened by the possibility of losing their traditional power amid post-Duvalier political change — have manipulated the peasants of the Jean Rabel area, pitting them against one another, currying favor with certain groups of peasants with promises of land redistribution and favoritism. They have created a situation, in Jean-Baptiste’s words, in which the “little dog eats the little dog, poor peasants are killing poor peasants just like themselves.” According to Jean-Baptiste, the landowners and their allies (including certain radio stations and the traditional Catholic Church) have been part of a misinformation campaign, accusing Jean-Marie Vincent of being a communist, creating a climate of fear in which peasants believe that communists are going to seize their land, homes, and possessions. Divisions within the Catholic Church — between the traditional, reactionary Church hierarchy and the “ti legliz” preaching liberation theology and promoting the rights of the poor dispossessed peasantry – are also responsible for the massacre, and, according to Jean-Baptiste, the Church should be held responsible. Father Jean-Marie Vincent explains the meaning of liberation theology and the importance of working with the poor for their rights and liberation.
