  • Olga Benoît of SOFA and Myrtha Gilbert discuss violence against women, including domestic violence and sexual violence, and also dehumanization of women. Many women and their families do not seek justice because they do not believe that they will ever find justice. The restavèk phenomenon is an example of violence against young vulnerable girls from poor backgrounds, which has its roots in the same dehumanization of women and normalization of violence. Likewise, violence against women is connected to other social phenomena, such as socioeconomic status and socialized feelings of superiority -- this is the cause of violence against household workers. They discuss the shaming of women and girls who have endured sexual violence, and women who are afraid to speak because they are economically dependent on their husbands or partners.
