Open our hearts and minds, O God, | 9:22
by the power of your Holy Spirit | 9:26
so that, as the word is read and proclaimed, | 9:29
we may hear Your message with joy this day, amen. | 9:32
The first lesson is from The Book of Genesis, | 9:37
chapter one through chapter two verse four. | 9:40
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, | 9:45
the earth was formless void and dark | 9:48
covered the face of the Earth | 9:51
while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. | 9:54
Then God said, "Let there be light", and there was light. | 9:58
And God saw that the light was good, | 10:03
and God separated the light from the darkness. | 10:06
God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. | 10:09
And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. | 10:13
And God said, "Let there be a dome | 10:19
"in the midst of the waters, | 10:21
"and let it separate the waters from the waters." | 10:23
So God made the dome and separated the waters | 10:26
that were under the dome from the waters | 10:29
that were above the dome. | 10:31
And it was so. | 10:33 | |
God called the dome Sky. | 10:35
And there was evening and there was morning, the second day. | 10:38
And God said, "Let the waters under the sky | 10:42
"be gathered together into one place, | 10:46
"and let the dry land appear." | 10:48
And it was so. | 10:51 | |
God called the dry land Earth, | 10:52
and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. | 10:55
And God saw that it was good. | 10:59
Then God said, "Let the earth put forth vegetation: | 11:02
"plants yielding seed, | 11:06
"and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit | 11:07
"with the seed in it." | 11:11
And it was so. | 11:13 | |
The earth brought forth vegetation: | 11:15
plants yielding seed of every kind, | 11:17
and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. | 11:20
And God saw that it was good. | 11:24
And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. | 11:27
And God said, "Let there be lights in the dome of the sky | 11:32
"to separate the day from the night, | 11:36
"and let them be signs, for signs, and for seasons, | 11:38
"and for days and years, | 11:42
"and let them be lights in the dome of the sky | 11:44
"to give light upon the earth." | 11:46
And it was so. | 11:49 | |
God made the two great lights, | 11:50
the greater light to rule the day | 11:53
and the lesser light to rule the night, and the stars. | 11:55
God set them in the dome of the sky | 11:59
to give light upon the earth | 12:01
and to rule over the day and over the night, | 12:03
and to separate the light from the darkness. | 12:06
And God saw that it was good. | 12:09
And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. | 12:11
And God said, "Let the waters bring forth | 12:16
"swarms of living creatures, | 12:18
"and let birds fly above the earth | 12:20
"across the dome of the sky." | 12:22
So God created the great sea monsters | 12:25
and every living creature that moves, of every kind, | 12:27
with which the waters swarm, | 12:31
and every winged bird of every kind. | 12:33
And God saw that it was good. | 12:37
God blessed them, saying, | 12:40
"Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, | 12:41
"and let birds multiply the earth." | 12:46
And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. | 12:49
And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures | 12:54
"of every kind: cattle and creeping things | 12:58
"and wild animals of the earth of every kind." | 13:01
And it was so. | 13:05 | |
God made the wild animals of every kind. | 13:07
And God saw that it was good. | 13:10
Then God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, | 13:13
"according to our likeness, | 13:17
"and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, | 13:19
"and over the birds of the air, | 13:22
"and over the cattle, | 13:24
"and over the wild animals of the earth, | 13:26
"and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth." | 13:28
So God created humankind in His image, | 13:32
in the image of God He created them; | 13:35
male and female He created them. | 13:38
God blessed them, and God said to them, | 13:42
"Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it, | 13:45
"and have dominion over the fish of the sea | 13:49
"and over the birds of the air | 13:53
"and over every living thing that moves upon the earth." | 13:55
God said, "See, I have given you every plant | 13:58
"yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, | 14:01
"and every tree with seed in its fruit, | 14:06
"you shall have them for food. | 14:09
"And to every beast of the earth, | 14:11
"and to every bird of the air, | 14:14
"and to everything that creeps on the earth, | 14:16
"everything that has the breath of life, | 14:18
"I have given every green plant for food." | 14:21
And it was so. | 14:24 | |
God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, | 14:26
it was very good. | 14:29 | |
And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. | 14:31
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, | 14:36
and all their multitude. | 14:39
And on the seventh day God finished the work | 14:41
that he had done, and he rested on the Sabbath day | 14:43
from all the work that he had done. | 14:46
So God blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it, | 14:48
because on it God rested from all the work | 14:51
that he had done in creation. | 14:54
These are the generations of the heavens and the earth | 14:57
when they were created. | 15:00

The second lesson is from Saint Paul's | 15:07
second letter to the Corinthians, | 15:09
chapter 13 verses 11 through 13. | 15:11
Finally brothers and sisters, farewell. | 15:15
Put things in order, listen to my appeal, | 15:19

- | Today is Trinity Sunday, | 22:59 |
when we celebrate and remember the mystery of the Trinity, | 23:01
the Christian belief that God has revealed Godself, | 23:05
one God in three persons: | 23:09
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, | 23:11
Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer. | 23:15
During the Easter season, | 23:20
we focused upon God revealed as the Son | 23:21
who died and was raised from the dead | 23:24
in order that we might be redeemed from a life of sin | 23:26
and restored to life abundant. | 23:29
And last week we celebrated Pentecost, | 23:32
the coming of the gift of the Holy Spirit, | 23:36
God's presence, which sustains us and empowers us | 23:38
for the ongoing work of being the church, | 23:43
the body of Christ in the world. | 23:46
So it is appropriate | 23:48
that our lectionary texts for today | 23:50
focus upon God the Creator, | 23:52
the first person of the Trinity. | 23:56
In Genesis scripture makes the bold theological assertion | 24:00
that God created the heavens and the earth, | 24:04
pushing back the chaos and the formless void | 24:08
to bring forth a creation | 24:11
characterized by both intricate order and radical freedom. | 24:13
Scripture is not interested in how God created. | 24:19
This is not a historical account, | 24:23
there is no scientific explanation offered, | 24:26
only the proclamation, | 24:30
that it was God who created the universe, | 24:33
and that we have a place in it. | 24:36
Science tells us that the Universe | 24:39
with its one trillion galaxies | 24:41
has approximately an 18 billion year history | 24:43
and the more scientists learn | 24:47
the more they're led to a sense of wonder | 24:49
at the mystery of creation. | 24:52
They tell us, that all the elements of our bodies, | 24:54
were birthed by a supernova explosion | 24:57
5.5 billion years ago, | 25:00
and that in the first seconds of the fireball, | 25:03
all the conditions had to be just right: | 25:05
the temperature had to be within one degree, | 25:09
the force and the speed of the explosion | 25:13
had to be just as it was, | 25:16
in order for this planet to ever evolve. | 25:18
If any of the elements present have been missing | 25:21
or even a fraction off, | 25:25
then the conditions necessary to bring forth life | 25:28
would never have existed; | 25:32
that the universe has such order | 25:35
to permit life to exist in endless variety | 25:38
with the ability to reproduce itself | 25:41
and adapt in order to survive is remarkable. | 25:44
As Rilke says, "Truly it is glorious, | 25:49
our being here." | 25:54 | |
In reflecting upon creation, Einstein said | 25:58
that one who cannot stand wrapped in awe | 26:02
is as good as dead. | 26:08
When we think about the universe and all its endless variety | 26:11
and meticulous order, how can we fail to respond to the one | 26:16
who created it with praise? | 26:20
The psalmist says it best, "O Lord, our Lord, | 26:24
"How Majestic is your name in all the Earth, | 26:29
"when we look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, | 26:32
"the moon and the stars that you have established, | 26:37
"what are human beings that You are mindful of them?" | 26:42
For Genesis also asserts | 26:48
that human beings enjoy a special relationship | 26:50
to the Creator, because we are created | 26:54
in the likeness of God and called blessed. | 26:56
Elizabeth Achtemeier says that in the Hebrew scripture | 27:02
the language used for Imago Dei, the image of God, | 27:05
points to the resemblance of human beings | 27:10
in their total person to God. | 27:12
She says "The concept of the Imago Dei | 27:16
"is a confession of the glorious nature of human beings." | 27:19
It is this glorious view of human nature | 27:24
made in the image of God, | 27:28
that prevents every cheapening of the human personality. | 27:30
Surely, that fact should be emphasized, | 27:36
for in our time there are many | 27:39
who try to make us less than we are. | 27:40
Bureaucrats repeatedly turn us into statistics, | 27:43
for advertisers we can be only targeted consumers, | 27:47
the military reckons our humanity | 27:53
in the grizzly figures of body counts and acceptable loss. | 27:55
Medicine can view us as collections of cells with DNA | 28:00
to be manipulated, and we ourselves, on the other hand, | 28:04
often define our relatives and friends | 28:08
by what they do in their jobs, | 28:11
as engineers, housewives, salespersons, lawyers, | 28:13
and when they can no longer work, | 28:18
we relegate them to the status of useless. | 28:19
But the creation story | 28:24
challenges any diminished notion of human value. | 28:26
We are created Imago Dei, in the image of God, | 28:31
that we are, | 28:37 | |
our very existence is of great value, | 28:39
apart from anything that we do. | 28:43
We are of high birth and high calling. | 28:47
We are created to image God | 28:51
both in our being and in our doing. | 28:54
What an incredible claim to make! | 28:58
God is imaged, represented, | 29:01
seen in us. | 29:06 | |
If we truly believed it, I wonder how much human suffering | 29:10
would be avoided, | 29:14
for each of us, each child would start life knowing, | 29:17
that we are incredibly precious, | 29:21
we are God's Own creation, God's Own likeness, | 29:25
and as such of an estimable worth. | 29:29
We would be told from the beginning, | 29:32
that we are uniquely valued and blessed by God | 29:34
for being who we are. | 29:38
There would be nothing to prove, no need to earn love, | 29:41
it would be given as a birthright, | 29:46
because we are children of God, Imago Dei. | 29:49
How many psychosis and neurosis and social disorders | 29:55
would be eliminated if we came into the world knowing, | 29:59
that we are blessed and loved? | 30:03
Our nation's children are in desperate need | 30:08
of this knowledge, that they are created in God's Own image, | 30:11
precious, infinitely valuable. | 30:16
For then surely, we would not have the statistics | 30:21
that led to the need for yesterday's stand | 30:23
for Children March on Washington DC, | 30:26
where almost 8,500 cases of abuse or neglect | 30:30
are daily reported in America, | 30:34
and three children die of abuse. | 30:37
Where daily six children commit suicide, | 30:40
and 13 children are homicide victims, | 30:43
or 15 children are killed by firearms, | 30:47
and more than 6,000 children are arrested. | 30:49
Where nearly 3,000 children drop out of school, | 30:54
and 1,400 children are born to teen mothers. | 30:57
Where daily 2,600 babies are born into poverty | 31:01
to become part of the shameful statistic, | 31:05
that one of every four children of America lives in poverty. | 31:08
If we started with the concept | 31:14
of the preciousness of human life, | 31:17
how might it drastically alter what we prioritize, | 31:21
both personally and corporately. | 31:25
I think we could no longer justify | 31:29
spending more on military technology and defense, | 31:31
than any other industrialized country, | 31:35
while ranking 16th in the living standard | 31:38
for the poorest 1/5 of our children. | 31:40
We could no longer tolerate | 31:45
having the highest standard of living in the world, | 31:46
and the largest number of millionaires and billionaires, | 31:49
while at the same time being 18th in the gap | 31:53
between the richest and poorest children. | 31:56
We could no longer be comfortable | 32:01
with having more than 200 million guns | 32:02
floating around on American streets | 32:05
and owning the dubious distinction | 32:08
of being one of the most violent societies in the world. | 32:10
If we truly believed in Imago Dei, | 32:16
the stamp of God in every human person, | 32:21
then we could not so easily throw away | 32:26
human life and potential. | 32:29
We must start by valuing ourselves more highly, | 32:33
so that we can pass that on to our children. | 32:37
It is not possible to love another, | 32:40
unless one first knows oneself to be loved. | 32:43
We need parents who know the value of their own lives, | 32:49
and we must learn how to treat every living being, | 32:53
as if in them we are dealing with the very being of God. | 32:57
When we hurt another, we hurt God, | 33:03
and when we love another, we love God. | 33:06
Simple but profound. | 33:11
We must teach these values to our children. | 33:16
Our children and we also need to be taught | 33:21
that we have an important part to play in the world, | 33:24
for each person is not only loved for who they are, | 33:28
they are also given an important and distinctive role | 33:32
to play in the world, to be God's image, | 33:35
to act as God would act in their place. | 33:40
It is our task as doctors and lawyers, and researches, | 33:44
and nurses, and financial planners, and teachers, | 33:47
and students, and parents, and grandparents, | 33:51
and neighbors, and friends. | 33:54
It is our task to figure out | 33:56
how God would act in our place, | 33:59
what would God value, | 34:03
how would God interact with co-workers, | 34:05
how would God deal with conflict or hurt or anger, | 34:08
how would God resolve injustice. | 34:13
The creation story tells us | 34:18
that the world wasn't created once and for all. | 34:19
It is being created right now, and you and I, | 34:23
and our children and grandchildren yet-to-be-born, | 34:28
all have a role to play in it. | 34:32
The opening verses of Genesis can be translated, | 34:36
"When God began to create." | 34:39
We are co-creators with the God who is still creating, | 34:45
and that is both an incredible gift | 34:51
and an awesome responsibility. | 34:53
Genesis says, that in creation | 34:56
God spoke only to human beings | 34:59
to tell them to be fruitful and multiply, | 35:02
and fill the Earth and subdue it, | 35:05
and have dominion over the fish of the sea, | 35:08
the birds of the air, and every living thing. | 35:11
We have been charged with the care of creation. | 35:16
This is an awesome and incredible gift. | 35:22
But a misunderstanding of what this means | 35:25
has resulted in perhaps more suffering, more harm, | 35:28
than any other passage of scripture that I can think of. | 35:32
What it means is that we are charged with the opportunity | 35:37
and responsibility to act like God acts in creation, | 35:41
to care for and build up what already exists, | 35:47
to use our gifts, our wisdom, our energy, our strength, | 35:50
our creativity to benefit and bless the creation. | 35:54
In creation, God's power is poured out | 35:59
on behalf of the other. | 36:02
The model of care God gives us is servanthood, | 36:05
the shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep. | 36:08
But instead we have acted like gods in our own right, | 36:13
exploiting, manipulating, | 36:17
and using creation for own ends, | 36:21
without regard to the consequences. | 36:24
As a result our planet is suffering | 36:27
on an unprecedented scale, | 36:30
with grave implications for future generations. | 36:33
Many of the world's crisis of disease, famine, and floods | 36:38
are due to deforestation, air pollution, ozone depletion, | 36:42
water degradation and destruction of species. | 36:47
Matthew Fox says that we are losing soil | 36:52
at the rate of 24 billion tons per year, | 36:55
that's the amount of the entire area of India. | 36:58
Water tables worldwide are falling dramatically. | 37:03
In Chapala, Mexico, the third largest freshwater lake | 37:07
in Latin America has fallen from a depth of 30 feet | 37:10
to less than 9 feet, and all the white fish are gone. | 37:14
In the U.S. disease is wiping out rainbow trout, | 37:20
and a mysterious bacteria killed millions of fish | 37:24
in the Neuse River this year. | 37:28
Human health is also being affected. | 37:32
In Czechoslovakia, there has been a 60% increase in cancer | 37:35
since 1970, in Los Angeles and Calcutta | 37:38
thousands of children are diagnosed | 37:43
with permanent respiratory damage by the age of 10, | 37:45
in Mexico City every citizen, including every child, | 37:49
is breathing the equivalent of two packs of cigarettes a day | 37:53
because of fouled air, | 37:57
and in the U.S. | 38:00 | |
there are 200,000 new cases of cancer yearly. | 38:02
Immune systems are breaking down among humans | 38:09
as well as non-humans. | 38:13
Thomas Berry alerts us to the price we are paying | 38:16
for neglecting our home. | 38:19
When he warns that we are involved in a supreme pathology | 38:21
as we go about closing down | 38:26
the major life systems of the planet. | 38:28
As he puts it, "We are upsetting the entire Earth system, | 38:31
"that has over some billions of years | 38:35
"and through an endless sequence of experiments | 38:38
"produce such a magnificent array of living forms, | 38:42
"forms capable of seasonal self-renewal, | 38:46
"over an indefinite period of time." | 38:49
What a responsibility we bear! | 38:53
For God has entrusted creation to our care, | 38:56
but also given us radical freedom | 39:00
to choose what we will do with that trust. | 39:04
We are free to live out God's blessing | 39:08
in ways that bless the creation | 39:11
in its human and non-human dimensions. | 39:15
And we are free to misuse our freedom, | 39:19
to abuse, exploit, and destroy. | 39:23
I'm afraid the evidence speaks loudly, | 39:30
that we have more often than not | 39:33
chosen to abuse our freedom | 39:36
and creation has kept the ledger, in the ozone layer, | 39:39
the pollution of the atmosphere and waters, | 39:44
deforestation and the destruction of species. | 39:48
In the 12th century, Hildegard of Bingen said, | 39:53
that there is a web of justice | 39:56
between humanity and all other creatures, | 39:59
and if humanity breaks this web of justice, | 40:02
then God permits creation to punish humanity. | 40:05
It is not an avenging God, | 40:11
but the human and non-human creation, | 40:14
that is responding to our abuse | 40:18
with disease and sickness. | 40:21
Our life is inextricably linked with the life of creation. | 40:27
We've learned a great deal about our interdependence | 40:33
in the last 50 years. | 40:36
We now know, that it is not possible to harm creation | 40:39
without harming ourselves. | 40:43
And that it is not possible for us to harm ourselves | 40:45
without harming creation. | 40:50
We're bound together inextricably, | 40:53
an intricate web of life floating in a sea of space | 40:57
with the forces of chaos pushed back but not defeated. | 41:03
We will thrive or perish as creation together. | 41:10
The blessed world, | 41:18
the world that is whole and healthy, | 41:20
and fruitful is the world that God intends, | 41:23
and God continues to work through us and in creation | 41:28
to create that world. | 41:31
It is our privilege as those made in the image of God | 41:34
to be co-creators with God, | 41:38
working to push back the forces of chaos, | 41:40
to bring healing and wholeness and blessing to the world. | 41:43
There is so much that we can do together, | 41:49
that we have begun to do together, | 41:52
and with God's creative power, | 41:55
there's so much that we can do to recover the blessing | 41:58
that God intends. | 42:01
But we must start with a sense of the preciousness of life | 42:04
and the sacredness of all creation. | 42:08
It is not enough to value our own lives, | 42:11
for we share creation with other human beings, | 42:15
with the creatures who fill our skies, and land, and sea, | 42:18
with the plants in the soil and the waters, | 42:23
with the sky and the planets, and the stars. | 42:26
God is expressed in us in a special way, Imago Dei, | 42:31
but God is also expressed in all of creation. | 42:36
There's so much that we can do to bring about that wholeness | 42:41
that God intends. | 42:47
Everything that exist, everything that is, | 42:49
everything in the world participates in this life of God. | 42:53
If we would but recognize its sacredness. | 42:58
Christian Theology and mysticism teaches us | 43:03
that God is not an absentee landlord | 43:06
but the very heart of being that exists in and through | 43:10
and around everything that is. | 43:15
Julian said we are in God, | 43:19
and God, whom we do not see, is in us. | 43:22
Mechthild of Magdeburg, a mystic and social activist | 43:26
of the 13th century said | 43:29
that the day of her spiritual awakening | 43:31
was the day she saw | 43:33
and knew that she saw all things in God | 43:35
and God in all things. | 43:40
Meister Eckhart said God is round about us, | 43:43
completely enveloping us. | 43:47
And Acts 17 verse 28 says | 43:50
that God is the one in whom we live and move | 43:54
and have our being. | 43:58
Nothing exists outside of God's own being, | 44:01
so in a very real sense, when we abuse creation, | 44:06
we crucify God all over again. | 44:09
And when we love what God has created, | 44:13
we love God the Creator, who is above and beyond | 44:16
and through and in all things. | 44:20
The creation story invites us to look at creation | 44:26
with eyes of awe and wonder, | 44:30
recognizing that it is | 44:34
the outpouring of God's gracious blessing upon the world. | 44:36
Rabbi Heschel says, that without awe, | 44:41
everything becomes an object of consumerism. | 44:44
Forfeit your sense of awe, | 44:48
let your conceit diminish your ability to revere, | 44:50
and the universe becomes a marketplace for you. | 44:54
Cultivating a sense of awe means developing the ability | 44:59
to recognize the sacredness, God's divine blessing | 45:03
in things and beyond them. | 45:08
For after each phase of creation God evaluated | 45:11
what had been made and pronounced it good. | 45:14
And three times in the story a blessing was pronounced, | 45:19
first, upon the living creatures, | 45:24
then, upon human beings, | 45:26
and last, upon the Sabbath, | 45:29
the day when God rested and delighted | 45:31
in what had been created. | 45:33
As God delights in us in creation, | 45:36
so we are also called to take delight in one another | 45:40
and in all that God has made. | 45:44
When is the last time that you stood | 45:48
and really looked at a tree with awe | 45:50
and noticed the way the trunk is bound to the earth | 45:55
and the way its roots reach deep down, grounding it, | 45:59
seeking the nourishment of water, | 46:04
and the way its branches reach out toward the heavens | 46:07
as if they were praising God? | 46:10
When is the last time | 46:13
that you stood under the coolness of its shade | 46:15
or smelled its fragrance? | 46:20
When is the last time that you really thrilled | 46:24
to hear the song of a bird | 46:27
or to watch its effortless flight | 46:29
or to marvel at its brilliant coloration? | 46:31
When did you last watch a child at play, | 46:36
observing her wonder at the most simple things, | 46:39
her ability to endlessly be fascinated by a pile of leaves? | 46:43
When did you last laugh for the sheer joy of laughter? | 46:50
It is said that adults laugh spontaneously 20 times a day | 46:55
and children more than 100 times a day. | 46:59
When is the last time that you let a child | 47:03
lead you into wonder and delight? | 47:05
We can discover delight and wonder almost anywhere, | 47:10
if we will but take the time to rest and appreciate | 47:14
the blessings of God in creation. | 47:18
It might be in the company of a grandparent | 47:21
or the tender touch of a friend | 47:24
or the glorious majesty of a mountain, | 47:27
or the soaring voices of a choir, | 47:30
or the soothing rhythm of the ocean surf. | 47:33
Genesis invites us to take time to pause in awe | 47:38
before God's creation, and by so doing | 47:42
to discover a closeness and a passionate love | 47:46
for both the creation and the One who stands behind | 47:51
and through, and around it, | 47:55
naming it good and blessed. | 47:59
