Almighty and most merciful Father, | 4:48
we confess that we have sinned against thy love | 4:52
and against thy truth. | 4:56
Neither with heart or soul nor strength have we loved thee | 4:58

We confess, especially that we have not loved thee | 5:10

We have not owned thy Lordship in our thinking. | 5:17
Therefore, we pray thee to have mercy upon us, | 5:21

For indeed, the whole law has been summed up | 11:02

sexual vice, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, | 11:52
witchcraft, amnesty, strife, jealousy, passionate anger, | 11:58
intrigues, division, sectarian parties, | 12:04

I warn you as I did before that people who do such things | 12:13
will have no share in the kingdom of God. | 12:18
The Spirit on the other hand brings the harvest of love, | 12:22
joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, benevolence, | 12:27
good faith, self discipline, and self restraint. | 12:35
Against such things there is no law. | 12:40
I know from experience that the scripture reading | 12:45
very readily goes in one ear and out the other. | 12:48
However, these particular verses | 12:52
have become very meaningful to me, | 12:55
and I'd like to share with you very briefly just how. | 12:57
Paul you will remember was writing to Christians, | 13:02
individuals who had intellectually accepted Jesus | 13:05
as the Messiah and made a conscious decision to follow Him. | 13:09
Yet, people who are limiting their freedom in Christ, | 13:14
bound by Jewish traditions, | 13:18
people who had indeed perverted the freedom, | 13:20
using it as a justification for the means to their own ends. | 13:24
Paul rebuking them very specifically | 13:30
defines the freedom that Christ offers | 13:33
both in the words I've just read, | 13:37
and then the whole pattern and attitude of his life. | 13:39
He introduces himself to the Philippians | 13:43
as a bond servant of Christ Jesus, is this freedom? | 13:46
In our scripture he says, | 13:52
"Let your steps be guided by the Spirit." | 13:54
That is the Spirit of God. | 13:57
Again, those operating on the contemporary sense of freedom | 14:00
would question his Liberty. | 14:04
It becomes obvious that Paul | 14:06
was speaking of a different kind of freedom, | 14:08
essentially a freedom from self and those parts of self | 14:11
that tend to limit the full living of life | 14:16
and simultaneously a freedom to beautifully experience Love, | 14:19
joy, peace, patience, and so on. | 14:24
This has been my experience, | 14:29
a direct consequence of knowing Jesus Christ. | 14:31
God, the Father, the Creator means for every individual here | 14:35
to have a personal relationship with Him | 14:39
and He having provided forgiveness | 14:43
through the death of Christ, | 14:45
invites us to accept that forgiveness | 14:47
and turn our lives over to His Lordship. | 14:50
This I can personally say is the beginning of life. | 14:54
And I challenge you each | 14:58
to examine the claims of Jesus Christ. | 15:00

is to take a new look at an old friend, liberation. | 22:30
People on the earth have been looking at the moon | 22:36
as long as there have been people on the earth. | 22:40
But this year we have taken a new look | 22:44
at our old neighbor in space, | 22:48
and now we understand fresh and exciting things about it. | 22:51
So with the concept of liberation, it's an old charm, | 22:58
but it certainly is time now that we revisit this friend. | 23:03
I'm going to ask you to think about it, | 23:09
while I now bring into focus, | 23:13
five separate distinct ideas about it. | 23:15
Those of you in the congregation | 23:21
who have been brought up on three point sermons | 23:23
may find the promise | 23:26
of a five point sermon a bit shocking. | 23:27
But I shall comfort you with the analogy | 23:31
that a pizza which is divided into five pieces | 23:34
is no larger than one which is divided | 23:38
into only three pizza pieces. | 23:41
Okay? | 23:44 | |
The first idea is that liberation is a wonderful thing. | 23:47
Exclamation point. | 23:55
As Christians, we have been called not only to be liberated, | 23:59
but to be agents of liberation for others. | 24:05
As Americans, boasting a strategically located | 24:10
Statue of Liberty, we are officially in favor of liberation | 24:15
as perhaps no other nation on earth is. | 24:20
As university people, | 24:25
we're committed to the liberation of man | 24:28
from the shackles of ignorance, superstition and prejudice. | 24:30
The very word liberation has an exciting, attractive sound. | 24:37
It sounds like Santa Claus or tasty frees. | 24:45
The thought of liberation is like getting a letter | 24:51
from a long lost friend, | 24:55
like a gentle rain after a long drought, | 24:59
like listening to the chapel choir singing, | 25:03
"Handel's Messiah." | 25:05

or like the sensation of your first romantic kiss. | 25:13
If you haven't had that, sorry about that. | 25:18
Liberation is popular overall the earth, | 25:23
and it has been celebrated through the centuries. | 25:29
Moses thousands of years ago, | 25:33
stood before the Egyptian Pharaoh and demanded, | 25:36
"Let my people go." | 25:40
Last night, Judy Collins sang, "We want our liberation now." | 25:46
You heard her singing. | 25:56
One of the most popular names in all of Latin America | 25:59
is that of Simon Bolívar known as The Liberator, | 26:02
because of his effective leadership | 26:08
in freeing the Latin Americans from the domination of Spain. | 26:10
In our own country, | 26:16
the great slogans and national heroes of the past, | 26:16
all relate to our liberation from England. | 26:20
Yes, liberation is a wonderful thing. | 26:25
The world needs very much more of it. | 26:29
And we are among those who should help the world to have it. | 26:33
That's point one. | 26:39
The second point is that the concept of liberation | 26:42
has within the lifetime of this present generation | 26:47
become terribly confused. | 26:52
The meaning of the word itself | 26:56
has in the minds of many come to be very cloudy. | 26:58
Lots of words in the English language | 27:03
have while going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, | 27:04
been stripped, beaten, and left half dead. | 27:08
For instance, when the word grass is spoken, | 27:14
the hearer doesn't know if it's something one sits on | 27:18
on the quad, | 27:22 | |
whether it may be some kind of a widow or whether it's pot. | 27:24
When the word pot is spoken hearer doesn't know | 27:30
whether it refers to | 27:34
that which traditionally calls the kettle black, | 27:35
whether it is that which precedes a fat man's spinal column, | 27:39
or if it's a pistolate hemp plant. | 27:44
Now that's what's happened to our word liberation, | 27:48
it's fallen on bad times. | 27:52
It's been roughed up. | 27:54
American soldiers in France during World War II | 27:58
were told they were there to liberate France from Germany. | 28:01
But when some of them stole cards from the French people, | 28:08
they spoke of liberating the French cards. | 28:12
Now the concept originally meant | 28:18
that one who had been forced against his will | 28:20
to be a slave would be set free to be his own man. | 28:24
That those who held selfish and malicious power over others | 28:30
would have that power broken. | 28:34
That those who were self shackled by the ignorance | 28:38
of their own minds would be self liberated | 28:41
by the acquisition of knowledge. | 28:44
That those who were being destroyed | 28:48
by prejudice and selfishness, | 28:50
whether they're own or others | 28:52
would be free by Spiritual regeneration. | 28:54
But at present the term liberation is used sometimes | 28:59
to mean what I've just said, | 29:04
but sometimes it is used to mean the process of brainwashing | 29:06
a person of all his beliefs and values | 29:10
until he concludes that life has no meaning | 29:14
and there are no ultimates. | 29:17
And when that happens, he is liberated. | 29:19
It's also being used to imply that freedom consists | 29:22
of the license to do what I want to do when I want to do it, | 29:25
regardless of the needs and rights of others. | 29:31
That is liberation. | 29:35
The word is being used in some quarters to imply a refusal, | 29:38
to learn, or to even consider | 29:42
any of the accumulated alleged wisdom of the past | 29:46
and an implied determination to govern one's life totally | 29:50
by how things look at the moment, that is liberation. | 29:55
The word is also being made to mean that, | 30:02
since I didn't ask to be brought into this world, | 30:05
I don't owe any responsibility of any type to anybody. | 30:09
So you can see how the concept has been eroded, | 30:16
how the idea has been diluted. | 30:21
But let us not cast it aside as a hopeless case. | 30:25
It's too good an idea to be lost. | 30:30
The world needs it too desperately. | 30:33
Instead, we need to take it to the clinic | 30:36
and rehabilitate it. | 30:38
Now the third fact about liberation, | 30:42
which we must understand with great clarity | 30:46
is that we cannot be liberated from something | 30:49
without being committed to something else. | 30:57
The point here is not that we should not be, | 31:04
but that we can not. | 31:10
A smart person will therefore always ask himself | 31:17
what he is being liberated into | 31:20
before choosing to be liberated from his present situation. | 31:23
Like a coin, liberation always has two sides. | 31:30
A person with claustrophobia riding in an airplane | 31:37
might feel that the interior of the plane | 31:42
is altogether too confining, | 31:44
that the floor, ceiling, the two sides | 31:48
and the two ends of the plane have him hemmed in. | 31:51
And he therefore might seek liberation | 31:55
from this confinement while in flight. | 31:58
As a matter of actual fact, | 32:03
a young man did precisely that very thing, | 32:06
only a few years ago in this state. | 32:09
He had been married earlier in the evening, | 32:13
he had invited some champagne at a reception | 32:16
and he and his bride set off on their honeymoon | 32:19
aboard an airliner. | 32:21
Well, sometime after take off, the groom arose from his seat | 32:25
strolled down the aisle of the plane. | 32:32
Champagne had liberated him from his inhibitions, | 32:36
and now he saw total liberation. | 32:40
He wanted to be free | 32:45
from the cramped quarters of the airliner. | 32:46
So he tore open the side door, | 32:49
stepped out into the clean, pure, rushing air | 32:52
and was indeed liberated from. | 32:59
However, this small step of liberation | 33:05
turned out to be a giant leap of commitment. | 33:10
In being set free from the plane | 33:14
he was committed to making an unrestricted response | 33:17
to the call of gravity. | 33:20
The next day, a search party found his body | 33:24
appropriately enough in a Cleveland County cemetery. | 33:27
Well, a wise and sober man | 33:33
will not impulsively choose liberation from anything | 33:35
until he knows to what this freeing act will commit him. | 33:40
Now this principle is valid in any area of human experience, | 33:47
but let me suggest that we think of it | 33:52
in relation to only one area just now for an illustration. | 33:55
And even in this area I certainly do not pretend | 34:00
to know the formula of the answer. | 34:03
I do think I can ask a relevant question. | 34:06
I refer to the so-called liberation of women. | 34:11
Women's liberation is something | 34:18
which I am quite certain is absolutely good. | 34:20
As long as we are talking about her freedom | 34:25
from every kind of unfairness and structured inequality. | 34:27
But when the discussion moves | 34:33
into a refashioning of female nature, | 34:34
I think both women and men should be very careful | 34:41
how they make rash pronouncements. | 34:46
There is such a thing as inherited female nature, | 34:51
and would you believe it is not the same as male nature? | 34:55
Female nature has certain attitudinal relationships | 35:01
in the fabric of it's given. | 35:05
Suppose we liberate a woman | 35:09
from the unique mystique of her feminine nature, | 35:11
do we really know what we have done? | 35:18
Do we? | 35:22 | |
I have known a few individuals who are said | 35:26
to have received the benefits of women's liberation. | 35:29
And I keep asking myself | 35:32
what it is that they were liberated into, | 35:34
when they were liberated from? | 35:38
Since you don't know who these are, you can't judge me. | 35:43
The fourth idea, which needs to be associated | 35:47
with a rehabilitated concept of liberation | 35:51
is that genuine freedom comes only as a result of strict, | 35:57
voluntary and inner commitment | 36:05
to something which may outwardly resemble slavery. | 36:10
That's the fourth idea. | 36:18
If I were to step up to bet for the San Francisco Giants, | 36:22
you can believe that I would not be free to hit a home run. | 36:27
Now this would just not be an option for me. | 36:32
There is a man on that team who has this freedom however, | 36:37
by voluntary discipline, | 36:43
he has denied himself many things, | 36:44
has practiced hours on in four weeks and unnumbered months. | 36:47
As a result, this past week, Willie Mays in San Diego, | 36:53
hit his 600th home run, trotting easily around the bases | 36:58
after sending the baseball 391 feet. | 37:04
If you were to take Willie Mays' hours of practice | 37:10
and self denial away from him, | 37:14
and brainwash him into an undisciplined life, | 37:18
would you be giving him liberation | 37:24
or would you be taking freedom away from him? | 37:27
If a student will enjoy the freedom | 37:34
to move about with competence in the world of botany, | 37:36
he must voluntarily discipline himself | 37:40
over a long period of time under the guidance | 37:43
of demanding botany professors. | 37:45
Should a botany student be liberated | 37:50
from the influence and teaching of a botany professor? | 37:53
Should a history student be liberated | 37:58
from the vastly superior knowledge of a history teacher? | 38:01
If a university student is seeking to prepare himself | 38:08
to be a progressive leader in politics, in education, | 38:13
in the church, or in science, | 38:20
should he seek to be liberated from the necessity | 38:25
to learn the wisdom and the mistakes of the past? | 38:29
And should he seek to be set free | 38:35
from the requirement to learn | 38:37
where the deposits of meaning and a purpose are stored? | 38:39
If so, with what result? | 38:46
I have time to mention only one more idea, | 39:00
which bears on this wonderful concept of liberation. | 39:02
Let me state it with sharp simplicity. | 39:07
We do have the freedom to choose our own actions, | 39:12
but we do not have the freedom | 39:16
to decide the consequences of those acts. | 39:18
There is no campaign of liberation which any one of us | 39:23
or all of us together can conduct, | 39:28
which has the power to change that fact. | 39:30
A man in a well-stocked chemistry lab is free to decide | 39:35
which elements he will pour into a test tube, | 39:38
but having chosen and having done the pouring, | 39:43
he is then no longer free to choose | 39:48
what compound will resolve from the mixture. | 39:51
Sometimes we lose this second freedom instantly, | 39:57
even before we were aware we're in danger of losing it. | 40:00
Other times we lose it gradually, | 40:04
or we gradually approached the point at which we lose it, | 40:07
but sooner or later, we always lose it, without exception. | 40:11
When Armstrong and Aldrin were descending | 40:18
in the lunar module in history's greatest TV show, | 40:21
they were well aware that there was a certain point | 40:26
at which they would have to make an irrevocable decision. | 40:30
Prior to the time they reached that point, | 40:36
they were free to change their original decision | 40:38
to descend to the surface of the moon. | 40:42
They would have enough fuel and a certain jet | 40:45
to blast the Eagle back up | 40:48
to join the mother spaceship Colombia. | 40:50
But if they continued to choose the descending course | 40:53
beyond a certain point, they would, | 40:58
and they did lose the freedom to return to the spaceship | 41:03
without first landing on the moon | 41:08
and disengaging the descend stage. | 41:11
So when in freedom, | 41:15
they chose to continue their descend | 41:18
past the critical part of no return. | 41:21
They lost the freedom to do anything other | 41:24
than to land on the moon safely or unsafely, | 41:27
wisely or unwisely, temporarily as it turned out | 41:33
or permanently as it might've been. | 41:38
Alive as it was or dead as it might've been. | 41:41
They could not choose the consequences of their choice. | 41:48
The scriptures remind us that we are free | 41:54
to choose what we shall sow | 41:57
but that we are not free to choose what we shall reap, | 41:59
once the seed is in the ground. | 42:02
Again, the scriptures tell us | 42:05
that a nation is free to choose the soul to win, | 42:07
but it does not have the freedom | 42:11
if it elects the soul to win | 42:15
to keep from reaping the whirlwind. | 42:18
A nation is free to choose whether it will enslave | 42:22
part of its citizens, but if it does enslave them, | 42:25
the consequences of that choice are out of its hands. | 42:29
The consequences are instead in the hands | 42:33
of a God of justice who created a moral universe. | 42:36
A nation is free to choose | 42:42
that it will be militaristic and take the sword, | 42:44
but if it takes it, | 42:50
the nation is not then free to decide | 42:53
that it will refuse to perish by the sword. | 42:55
So it is with the individual. | 43:01
I can choose to ignore the moral universe at any given time, | 43:04
but I cannot choose to have the moral universe ignore me. | 43:10
Let me paraphrase the Salem cigarette commercial. | 43:16
Say, "You can take the moral accountability out of a man, | 43:20
but you can take the man out of moral accountability." | 43:24
At this point, I will with permission report the words | 43:32
of an intelligent young man who sought my counsel | 43:37
at a desperate time in his life. | 43:40
He told me that his wife had left him, | 43:44
that the last time he approached his four year old son, | 43:47
the child fled from him in panic. | 43:52
The man had just been fired from his 11th job | 43:58
and he was in debt $15,000. | 44:02
Now, in spite of the fact | 44:07
that he was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate | 44:09
of one of our best universities, | 44:10
he could not secure a top job. | 44:12
The only reason he was in this sad state of affairs | 44:17
was that he could not control his drinking, | 44:21
his drinking controlled him. | 44:25
When I asked him how long he had been drinking, | 44:29
he replied that he had taken his first drink | 44:32
of wine 10 years earlier. | 44:34
And then he added one night | 44:37
when I was a freshman in college, | 44:40
some of my friends helped liberate me | 44:41
from my loyalty to my Father's principle of abstinence. | 44:45
Now I mention this today, | 44:50
not just because this young man requested that I report | 44:52
what had resulted from his liberation, | 44:57
but also because in America today, | 45:00
there are 8 million other people | 45:02
who are enjoying their liberation | 45:07
the same way he is enjoying his, | 45:10
and who like him have discovered | 45:14
that we are free to choose our actions, | 45:16
but we are not free to decide the consequences. | 45:19
Well, there is a vast amount of pure fantasy | 45:24
in the contemporary rhetoric of liberation | 45:29
and wherever this fantasy exists, | 45:34
there exists a corresponding amount of potential tragedy. | 45:37
Therefore, as one means of our making a start | 45:42
toward a realistic rehabilitation, | 45:49
of this great blessing of liberation, | 45:53
I offer these five ideas. | 45:58
First, genuine liberation is a wonderful thing | 46:01
and Christians must be in the front of the action. | 46:05
Second, we must remember that at present | 46:09
the definition of freedom is badly confused | 46:12
and needs clarification. | 46:16
Third, we cannot be liberated from something | 46:18
without being committed to an alternative. | 46:23
Fourth, any meaningful freedom | 46:27
requires voluntary discipline and sacrifice. | 46:31
Last, we must never forget | 46:37
that our freedom to choose comes to a screeching halt | 46:40
after we have chosen to act, | 46:43
the consequences of the actions are not ours to decide. | 46:46
Our heavenly Father give us grace | 46:53
to stand fast in the freedom with which Christ | 46:55
has set us free. | 46:59 | |
