Summary: Copy of a Barren County Court report for the "April Call Term,1863" with remarks from D.B. Denton, the jailor of Barren County. Report states that "there is 5 runaway slaves named George, Lewis, Jasper, Sherrod, & Charles now in [Denton's] custody, and he has advertised slaves as required by law then existing in the Louisville Journal for the last six months". The Barren County Court subsequently ordered George, Lewis, Jasper, Sherrod, and Charles to be sold "at the courthouse on a Court day, to the highest bidder, after advertising the time and place of said sale for at least 15 days beforehand at four public places in said County". The Court required the courthouse door in Glasgow to be one of the "four public places". "Valuation[s]" of George ("about 23 years of age at $275.00"), Lewis ("about 18, $325.00"), Jasper ("about 18, $325.00"), Sherrod ("about 16, $300.00"), and Charles ("about 28, $325.00") are included (page 2). The report concludes with a section signed by S.R. Toll, sheriff of Barren County. Toll "did on the 20th day of April 1863 proceed to sell all except Jasper who was claimed by his master". D.B. Denton, the jailor, purchased and enslaved Lewis "at the sum of four hundred and twenty dollars"; A.J. Wood purchased and enslaved Sherrod "at the sum of three hundred and thirty eight dollars". Charles Denton purchased and enslaved George "at the sum of one hundred & forty dollars". Charles was "bid off by George Sanders for $550.00" but Sanders did not pay the "necessary bond", and Charles was "returned to jail". On June 15, 1863, David W. Hodge purchased and enslaved Charles for "three hundred & thirteen dollars".
