	the word already was,	14:25
	the word dwelt with God,	14:29
	and what God was, the word was.	14:32
	The word of then was with God at the beginning,	14:39
	and through Him, all things came to be.	14:44
	No single thing was created without Him.	14:48
	All that ever came to be was alive with His life,	14:54
	and that life was the light of men.	15:00
	The light shines on in the dark,	15:05
	and the darkness has never quenched it.	15:09
	That appeared a man named John sent from God.	15:15
	He came as a witness to testify to the light,	15:21
	that all might become believers through him.	15:26
	He was not himself the light,	15:32
	he came to bear witness to the light.	15:36
	The real light, which enlightens every man,	15:41
	was even then coming into the world.	15:45
	He was in the world,	15:51
	but the world, though it owed its being to Him,	15:53
	did not recognize Him.	15:58
	He entered his own realm, and his own would not receive Him.	16:02
	But to all who did receive him,	16:10
	to those who have yielded Him their allegiance,	16:14
	He gave the right to become children of God,	16:19
	not born of any human stock,	16:23
	all by the fleshly desire of a human father,	16:27
	but the offspring of God himself.	16:32

	such glory as befits the father's only son,	16:47

	but takes rank before me.	17:10
	For before I was born,	17:14
	He already was.	17:17

	we have all received grace upon grace,	17:25
	for while the law is given through Moses,	17:29
	grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.	17:33
	No one has ever seen God,	17:39
	but God's only son.	17:43
	He who is nearest to the father's heart,	17:46

	Before I begin the sermon,	18:45
	may I say how delighted I am,	18:48
	as a representative of the British Church,	18:51
	to be sharing in your worship	18:57
	in this lovely church this morning.	18:58
	I come from the industrial Midlands of England,	19:02
	and with my wife and daughters,	19:08
	we are spending about six weeks in the United States	19:10
	as representatives of the British Council of Churches,	19:15
	and seeking to build relationships	19:20
	between all British and American churches.	19:23
	Now, the subject of the sermon this morning,	19:29
	is the strange subject of Christmas in August.	19:31
	There is a very good reason why I have chosen to do this.	19:39
	Sometime ago, I read two interesting criticisms	19:46
	of the way that we in Britain celebrate Christmas.	19:52
	One of the criticisms talked	19:58
	about the highly commercialized English Christmas	20:01
	with its cut price nylon,	20:07
	and its very centers in large stores.	20:11
	And went on to talk about the Christmas cards	20:17
	with that inevitable stage coaches unholy,	20:22
	and their atrocious verse.	20:28
	Now, this criticism of Christmas, as we spend it,	20:33
	is far too near the born to be comfortable.	20:39
	The second comment which I read was this,	20:46
	that for an infant in arms,	20:49
	Christmas means nothing.	20:52
	For a six-year-old, Christmas means father Christmas.	20:55
	For a 12-year-old, Christmas means fun,	21:02
	and games, and presents.	21:07
	For a teenager, Christmas means a holiday,	21:11
	parties, and mistletoe.	21:16
	For a middle-aged person, Christmas means getting exhausted,	21:20
	getting ready for somebody else's Christmas.	21:25
	And for an elderly person,	21:29
	Christmas means, sitting and watching, and memories.	21:31
	Now, most of this second comment is perfectly good.	21:40
	We all enjoy Father Christmas,	21:46
	at whichever end of it we may be.	21:49
	We all enjoy the presents,	21:53
	though it gets increasingly difficult to know what to give.	21:56
	We all enjoy the fun, and the games, and the family frolic.	22:01
	I think we enjoy getting exhausted,	22:07
	getting ready for somebody else's Christmas.	22:10
	And I imagine that when we are old,	22:14
	it must be sheer have to sit and watch,	22:17
	though the memories may be mixed.	22:22
	Now, all that is perfectly wholesome and perfectly good.	22:26
	But it is possible, in all the hurry and scurry,	22:33
	of preparing for Christmas, and enjoying Christmas,	22:39
	to miss the message.	22:45
	And I therefore believe	22:49
	that on this lovely Sunday morning in August,	22:51
	we are right in pausing quietly,	22:56
	to remember what is the absolutely amazing message,	23:01
	which Christmas celebrates all over the world every year.	23:08
	Now, I want to do so by looking through three windows.	23:18
	In order to look through the first window,	23:24
	may I take you back to February	23:26
	of two and a half years ago in England,	23:31
	I got up early one morning, very early for me.	23:38
	It was very cold,	23:43
	the snow had been falling	23:46
	and it was exceptionally cold.	23:48
	And only something that is special	23:51
	would make me get up very early on a morning like that.	23:54
	And I turned on the knob of the radio,	24:00
	and the man said, "It is very hot, very hot indeed."	24:05
	All the women are wearing the summer frocks,	24:12
	All the men are dressed in their summer shirts,	24:16
	and I was feeling so cold.	24:19
	He said, "Freddie Truman is about to bowl	24:23
	his 26 over to Peter May."	24:26
	Now, that may mean nothing to you,	24:30
	but it really meant that we in England	24:32
	were playing cricket against Australia at Brisbane.	24:34
	And I was one of those mad Englishman,	24:40
	who get up and listen to the radio	24:43
	on a cold morning to a cricket match.	24:46
	And I thought, "It's so cold."	24:50
	And he says, "It's so hot."	24:53
	What a wonderful thing it would be,	24:56
	if I could catch one of these modern machine,	24:59
	and I could go to a beach,	25:03
	where it was hot there.	25:06
	Now, if I had been able to do so,	25:09
	I would have found that on this beach,	25:11
	there would be a special bathing enclosure in the sea.	25:15
	But being British	25:21
	and having this dreadful independence strain,	25:22
	I would say, "But I don't walk to bathe in the enclosure,	25:26
	I want to be bathe in the open sea."	25:29
	And they would say, "Well, bathe in the open sea	25:33
	if you wish, but there are shacks."	25:35
	And so, I would bathe in the bathing enclosure.	25:39
	And in the bathing enclosure,	25:42
	I should feel perfectly at home,	25:44
	perfectly comfortable, I should know the rules.	25:47
	But out there, in the open sea,	25:52
	looking below the surface,	25:56
	would be the tiger of the sea, the shack,	25:59
	callousness, cruelty, coldest.	26:04
	Now, you and I spend beyond 50 to a 100 years	26:11
	in an enclosure, we call it this planet.	26:17
	The planet is revealing to us	26:22
	more of its wonders every week,	26:25
	but we know enough to get by.	26:28
	We know the rules.	26:31
	What is outside this enclosure?	26:34
	You were looking at that beautiful child the other day,	26:40
	who was born recently,	26:43
	where did he come from?	26:46
	I don't mean his body, I mean his personality.	26:47
	You're thinking about that man you know so well	26:53
	who died the other day.	26:57
	Where is he gone?	26:59
	And I don't mean his body, I mean his personality.	27:01
	Let us imagine that you were stopped as you came along	27:08
	to this church this morning and somebody said,	27:11
	"Look, you go to worship every Sunday, you're a Christian.	27:14
	We had a bit of a dew in our house yesterday.	27:20
	We were arguing about what there is outside this planet.	27:22
	You're a Christian, what is there?"	27:27
	You must have some belief,	27:30
	what would you have said?	27:34
	So, the first thing that I want to emphasize this morning,	27:38
	is that the message of Christmas,	27:43
	gives us the clue,	27:47
	to walk there is, not only in this planet,	27:49
	but far beyond it.	27:55
	And the clue, is in the first chapter off St. John's gospel.	27:59
	For there it says, "In the beginning, was the word."	28:06
	And so, you say this to your friend you met this morning,	28:15
	you would say, "Well, it says,	28:18
	'In the beginning was the word.'"	28:20
	And they say, "Well, what do you mean by that?"	28:24
	And you say, "Well, of course, it's a translation.	28:28
	I should have said, 'In the beginning was the logos.	28:32
	It's Greek you know."	28:36
	They'd have said, "What do you mean by logos?"	28:38
	Or what do you mean?	28:43
	If your trying to find out what is outside this planet.	28:45
	If you're trying to help people to see	28:52
	that it is not cold and mysterious,	28:55
	and callous and uncomfortable.	28:59
	And if you say to them, "In the beginning was the word,"	29:04
	what do you mean?	29:10
	May I get quickly three examples.	29:13
	The word logos appears in many of our words of normal usage.	29:16
	You have a child who comes home,	29:23
	and he's been to college and you say,	29:26
	"Well, what have you been reading today?"	29:29
	He says, or if he lived in England	29:32
	and he might very well say, "Biology"	29:35
	Bios, logos.	29:40
	The logos, the idea, the purpose	29:43
	that governs the development of bios, life.	29:46
	You see, logos, the idea, the purpose that is that in it.	29:50
	Or again, I remember standing	29:57
	in a Shropshire Town in England called Church Stratton,	29:59
	and seeing a large number	30:03
	of university students at the bus stop.	30:05
	I said to a man locally, I said,	30:08
	"What have they been, on a hiking holiday?	30:10
	"No," he said, "they've been on a geological expedition."	30:15
	There you are, you see?	30:20
	Geos-logos, the idea which governs	30:22
	the formation of the Geos, the Earth.	30:26
	Or again, we have a very famous radio and television figure	30:31
	in our country called George Cansdale.	30:36
	And whenever George Cansdale comes on	30:39
	with his animals and reptiles, and birds,	30:42
	the word zoology comes to mind.	30:48
	Zoe-logos, the idea,	30:52
	the principle that governs	30:55
	the development of life generally.	30:57
	So, the first thing which I would say	31:02
	to any inquirer is this,	31:05
	from the very beginning, before you were or I was,	31:09
	before Britain was,	31:15
	before the United States of America were,	31:17
	before any conceivable thing you know was,	31:21
	in the beginning,	31:25
	is the purpose of the living God.	31:27
	Outer space is not mysterious,	31:32
	or cold, or callous, or uncomfortable.	31:35
	It is an area which is governed by the purpose of God.	31:40
	Now, the second window through which we look,	31:48
	is given to us again in this first chapter	31:52
	of St John's gospel.	31:55
	And I think this is absolutely wonderful,	31:57
	and this is what your celebrating at Christmas.	32:01
	This is why it is a tragedy	32:05
	if Christmas goes through,	32:08
	just with the fun, and the games, and the presents,	32:10
	and the highly commercialized store.	32:13
	"For the word became flesh,	32:17
	God has revealed	32:25
	to all mankind once and for all,	32:29
	the purpose, the character to which He has,	32:35
	throughout the universe.	32:40
	It is incredible.	32:42
	And I hope that when you come around to Christmas	32:45
	in a few months time,	32:48
	the central thing in your Christmas arrangements,	32:50
	will be the religious observance.	32:54
	That is the central thing,	32:58
	everything else is secondary.	33:01
	It is, of course, perfectly logical.	33:05
	Many years ago, there was in France	33:09
	an affair called the French Revolution.	33:11
	I gather that the revolution or is, first of all,	33:14
	published a number of primitive, sort of leaflets	33:18
	with their revolutionary ideas on paper.	33:22
	The leaflets got them nowhere, nobody bothered.	33:25
	And then suddenly, the revolutionary ideas	33:29
	became flesh in Volterra, and Russo and so on.	33:32
	And once the ideas became human personality.	33:38
	Once that was the flesh of the eye,	33:42
	once there was the raise of the voice,	33:45
	once personality revealed the revolutionary idea,	33:48
	the revolution was on.	33:54
	And so it is, in our Christian religion,	33:59
	in Jesus Christ you have everything you need	34:03
	to know about God, this side of the grave.	34:08
	In Jesus Christ, you have everything	34:13
	which God desires of you, this side of the grave.	34:16
	The word, the eternal words,	34:21
	the eternal purpose and character of the living God,	34:25
	has been given to you in Jesus Christ.	34:30
	And Jesus Christ is the same in every generation.	34:35
	There are some young intellectuals who say,	34:40
	that Jesus Christ is just a historical figure and no more.	34:44
	My answer, is that Jesus Christ is as much,	34:49
	the revelation of God today,	34:54
	as He was on the day when he walked through Galilee.	34:58
	So, may we mentioned the third thing.	35:06
	I do not think it is ever a good thing to talk like this,	35:10
	unless we make a practical application.	35:15
	And I want therefore to say,	35:20
	the word of God, is being made flesh in you.	35:23
	The only way whereby the word and character	35:32
	and love God are being revealed to this generation,	35:36
	is through you, and me,	35:41
	and people like us,	35:45
	who named the name of Christ as Lord	35:47
	in every town all over the world.	35:50
	And as I represent here today the Council of Churches,	35:55
	I would say that in a sense,	35:59
	the relationships between the churches,	36:02
	both in towns, in countries, and in international realm,	36:05
	are either revealing God in the flesh,	36:11
	or are failing to do so.	36:15
	May I give you two illustrations?	36:19
	In the University of Oxford,	36:23
	we have as one of the professors of mathematics,	36:25
	a very fine Methodist local preacher,	36:29
	Professor Charles E. Coulson.	36:32
	Some six or seven years ago,	36:36
	Professor Charles Coulson published a book	36:39
	called "Science and Christian Belief."	36:42
	It was actually a book of the lectures	36:46
	he had given short time before.	36:49
	And the whole of that book, Charles Coulson,	36:52
	a great scientist says this,	36:55
	"This is as we all know,	36:57
	a very wonderful scientific century.	37:00
	All that God is permitting man to discover,	37:04
	cannot come to its fullness for mankind,	37:11
	say in Jesus Christ."	37:16
	There are plenty of scientists on both sides of the Atlantic	37:21
	who can tell you how,	37:25
	such scientists can be very dangerous.	37:29
	It is good to know how.	37:34
	Obviously, we all glad to know how.	37:36
	But until a scientist moves on from telling you how,	37:40
	to telling you why, that scientist is not a leader.	37:44
	And it is man of a caliber of an of Charles Coulson	37:49
	in every country, in whom the world is being made flesh	37:53
	in a scientific generation.	37:59
	And the other thing is this,	38:04
	a few months ago, I attended a service	38:06
	in a modern cathedral in England in the city of Liverpool.	38:08
	And in this cathedral, there is a magnificent window.	38:12
	And this window is devoted to the memory of Christian women.	38:16
	And walk all off the head and shoulders in the window,	38:21
	there amongst many, is that all Susanna Wesley.	38:25
	Why is she there in a modern British cathedral?	38:30
	Not just because she was the mother of John Wesley	38:36
	and Charles Wesley, though that was enough,	38:40
	but she is in that window representing	38:44
	the finest qualities of Christian motherhood.	38:48
	For in her, as a Christian mother in a family,	38:53
	in a Lincolnshire village,	39:00
	in days when incomes were small and education was meager,	39:02
	the word of God became flesh to her family.	39:09
	And so this morning, though it is August,	39:17
	I ask you to remember,	39:21
	that in the celebration of Christmas time,	39:24
	we celebrate one of the most amazing things	39:28
	that has ever happened on this universe or ever will.	39:32
	We celebrate that from the very beginning of all things,	39:36
	God has a purpose for all mankind and it is good.	39:40
	And second layer that He has revealed it	39:47
	in the human life of Jesus Christ.	39:50
	And Jesus Christ is the revelation now,	39:54
	as much as He was nearly 2000 years ago.	39:58
	Finally, that Jesus Christ your Lord and savior and mine,	40:02
	is calling upon you as an individual,	40:08
	and us, as a fellowship,	40:13
	to reveal God in the flesh of our personalities.	40:17

-	Oh, God, accept these offerings of thy people.	49:00
	Let the money we offer do much good for thy glory.	49:05
	And may the symbolic bread and wine we dedicate,	49:08
	make vivid the sacrifice of thy son,	49:12
	our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.	49:15

	Lift up your hearts.	49:53

	It is very neat, right, and our bounded duty	50:12
	that we should at all times,	50:16
	and in all places, give thanks unto thee, oh Lord,	50:18
	holy father, almighty everlasting, God.	50:22

	All mighty God, our heavenly father	51:11
	who have thy tender mercy,	51:14
	didst give thine only son Jesus Christ	51:15
	to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption,	51:18
	who made there, by his ablation of himself once offered,	51:22
	a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice	51:27
	for the sins of the whole world,	51:30
	and in institute, and in his holy gospel command us	51:33
	to continue a perpetual memory of his precious death	51:37
	until His coming again.	51:41
	And who in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread.	51:44
	And when he had given thanks, He broke it,	51:48
	and gave to his disciples saying,	51:51
	"Take, eat, this is my body,	51:53
	which is given for you.	51:59
	Do this in remembrance of me."	52:02

	for this is my blood of the new covenant,	52:16

	We do not presume to come to this thy table,	53:00
