And so we pressed a request that both the Afros speak | 0:56 | |
and that speakers from the concerned people who I met | 1:00 | |
at Page be also given the permission to speak | 1:04 | |
and we went on planning a program where we would speak | 1:07 | |
with Doctor Knight and we made our plans in that regard. | 1:11 | |
Sometime last night we were informed by Doctor Knight | 1:17 | |
that he couldn't make it, it was unsafe to have a meeting | 1:21 | |
on this campus so we couldn't meet with him. | 1:26 | |
However, we asked him if it was alright for us to | 1:32 | |
have a meeting and he said oh, that's okay. | 1:35 | |
So I guess it's only unsafe for him to come out and talk. | 1:39 | |

I guess he's afraid there might be some gas left. | 1:51 | |
This morning we extended an invitation to Doctor Knight | 1:56 | |
to come and speak here, he has repeatedly refused our | 2:00 | |
invitation, we have people where he is at now to ask | 2:04 | |
him again to come here, we've assembled peacefully. | 2:10 | |
It's pretty safe in here, I think. | 2:14 | |
I don't see things flying around and we've asked him again. | 2:19 | |

demands that they have pressed on this University | 2:59 | |
and the actual results they have gotten from the university. | 3:02 | |

Well that was all good but it would be better if | 3:44 | |
you take some inspiration from the black students | 3:47 | |

That's what we entertain to do. | 3:54 | |
So all the students got to assert your humanity. | 3:56 | |
Now the main thing is our demands. | 3:59 | |
These things are vital to survival of blackness | 4:03 | |
on this campus, we intend for | 4:07 | |
blackness to survive on this campus. | 4:10 | |
Now the press, which wants to be under the wrong | 4:14 | |
impression, is under the wrong impression that we just | 4:18 | |
presented these demands the other night when we | 4:22 | |
visited Doctor Knight in his house. | 4:25 | |
Well the fact of the matter is that we've been | 4:29 | |
negotiating about these specific demands ever since | 4:33 | |
September, these specific demands. | 4:37 | |
We have been negotiating for the past two and a half years | 4:42 | |
on general things that affect black students on this | 4:46 | |
campus, we have been working on the interest of black | 4:50 | |
students ever since the Afro American Society has | 4:53 | |
been formed, now the administration tells us proper | 4:56 | |
channels, proper channels, alright. | 5:00 | |
We've used our proper channels for two and a half years. | 5:03 | |
Alright, they give us one hour to come out | 5:06 | |
and talk with them on their terms. | 5:11 | |
We have been talking on their terms for two and a half | 5:14 | |
years, now there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding | 5:17 | |
about what we want, they can't understand what these | 5:23 | |
statements means, so I'm gonna run down our 13 demands now | 5:28 | |
and I'm gonna like to explain each one of 'em. | 5:34 | |
The first one, we want the establishment of a full | 5:38 | |
credited department of African Afro American studies. | 5:42 | |
The white man has brain washed the world. | 5:48 | |
The white man is the only man with civilization. | 5:51 | |
Now people are realizing that in Africa there was | 5:55 | |
civilization comparable to those in Europe, | 5:57 | |
some that surpass those in Europe. | 6:00 | |
Yet the black man is only dealt with in one or two | 6:02 | |
paragraphs, black people cannot be dealt with in a | 6:05 | |
paragraphs, you need volumes to deal with black people. | 6:08 | |

For this university to be a leading university as | 6:17 | |
they wanna be like the Availe and all that crap, | 6:21 | |
we think it is necessary for them to cover all aspects | 6:27 | |
of civilization, all aspects of culture. | 6:31 | |
Black studies programs are part of what they need | 6:36 | |
to like cover everything, all knowledge. | 6:41 | |
Black people have contributed a lot to civilization. | 6:45 | |
Therefore, if this is to be a place of learning, you | 6:48 | |
must learn about everything there is to learn or you | 6:53 | |
must have an opportunity to learn about everything. | 6:56 | |
Alright, black people are taught only about white people. | 7:00 | |
We know enough about white people. | 7:05 | |
Everyone needs to learn about black people. | 7:07 | |
You need to learn about black people. | 7:09 | |
This is not just for us, you need education more than we do. | 7:11 | |

You call it separatism, it's not separatism. | 7:23 | |
We like just trying to get everything together, | 7:26 | |
everything together so you can learn about everything. | 7:29 | |
You just learn about one aspect of people. | 7:31 | |
You just learn about white people. | 7:34 | |
You need to learn about black people. | 7:36 | |
We've been living through all these years. | 7:38 | |
We know about you now, you don't know nothing about us. | 7:40 | |
You got to learn, you got to learn. | 7:43 | |
Alright, in this Afro American studies program, | 7:47 | |
we must have control, white people cannot objectively | 7:51 | |
set up a program about black people. | 8:00 | |
You all wanna believe that Colonel report, don't ya? | 8:04 | |
You all wanna go along with that thing. | 8:07 | |
Well it said that you were sick, that you were | 8:09 | |
inherently racist, well I mean you might not be | 8:11 | |
consciously like that but it's embedded in you. | 8:15 | |
You've been taught all these years. | 8:18 | |
So like black people will set up the program. | 8:21 | |
Black people will control the program. | 8:24 | |
Black people will teach the courses. | 8:25 | |
That is what we want. | 8:29 | |

We want the right to establish a black dormitory on campus. | 8:39 | |
You and your separatism bag again, okay. | 8:44 | |
The university has a contradiction to clear up. | 8:49 | |
We asked for a black dormitory so that we can | 8:52 | |
further promote our own interests. | 8:55 | |
We can have fun our way. | 8:58 | |
We won't have to pay money for you to have your | 9:00 | |
party if we don't wanna take partying. | 9:02 | |
We have our own thing, okay, they tell us well | 9:05 | |
you got to have a certain percentage of whites | 9:08 | |
living in your dormitory because of the civil rights law. | 9:11 | |
Well we got some little white fraternities on this campus, | 9:15 | |
the campus that got buildings to themselves | 9:18 | |
and ain't no black people livin' in there. | 9:21 | |
Where's the percentage of black people supposed to | 9:22 | |
be in each building, university's got to clear | 9:24 | |
up the contradiction, either they give us a black | 9:26 | |
dormitory or they get rid of the white ones. | 9:28 | |
That's what we want. | 9:30 | |

With other plans to this school, I got this | 9:54 | |
information about Duke claiming to be indebted | 9:59 | |
to the surrounding regions, North Carolina, the southeast. | 10:03 | |
Well, we wanna see some indications of that in the | 10:10 | |
number of black people that are on campus. | 10:14 | |
Alright, our third demand, since Duke claims to be | 10:17 | |
representative of the southeast and since the percentage | 10:21 | |
of blacks in this area is 29%, we want the black | 10:24 | |
student population to reach this figure by the fall of | 10:28 | |
1973, alright, they gonna go into their bag about oh, | 10:31 | |
you gonna have to lower standards to let black people | 10:36 | |
come into this school because they don't measure up. | 10:38 | |
They come from inferior schools. | 10:41 | |
Well, the fact of the matter is that ain't so high so now. | 10:43 | |
They just already taught a white middle class culture, | 10:46 | |
see and a lot of white people can relate to that thing. | 10:49 | |

You ain't lowerin' no standards, you don't be lowering | 10:53 | |
no standards, you just be reorienting your standards. | 10:55 | |
There ain't no such thing as lowering standards for | 10:57 | |
black people, you can't lower the standards. | 10:59 | |
You just change 'em around, just reorient 'em so | 11:01 | |
we can relate to the thing. | 11:03 | |

There are enough black students in this region for Duke | 11:11 | |
to get 29% black population on this campus by 1973. | 11:15 | |
That is what we want, our fourth demand. | 11:21 | |
We want the reinstatement of black students who | 11:25 | |
because of the stifling cultural and social environment | 11:28 | |
at Duke were unable to achieve required academic standing | 11:31 | |
and were subsequently forced to leave the university. | 11:34 | |
Alright, I heard a few guys talking. | 11:39 | |
Oh, it's ridiculous, they flunked out. | 11:43 | |
Why did they flunk out? | 11:46 | |
It wasn't because they couldn't do the work. | 11:50 | |
And then you come over this stuff well, maybe they didn't | 11:52 | |
study, well you gotta look at the reason why | 11:54 | |
they didn't study, why didn't they study? | 11:57 | |
What caused these students to lose their drive | 11:59 | |
to wanna do the work, it's this racist atmosphere | 12:02 | |
on this campus, the racist atmosphere, the same | 12:06 | |
racist atmosphere that's on this whole reservation | 12:09 | |
called America, the racist atmosphere that exists | 12:12 | |
all over this damn world, see, so it is necessary for | 12:15 | |
the atmosphere on this campus to be changed so black | 12:20 | |
students can like relate and can like live with the thing. | 12:23 | |
It's kinda hard to live here, you just live to exist. | 12:30 | |
Just be able to exist, you're almost a shell. | 12:35 | |
You're just hangin' in, we want the financial reassurance | 12:38 | |
for black students, increase scholarships to limit | 12:44 | |
the number of students returning in the fall. | 12:47 | |
Now a lot of you found here financial problem too. | 12:51 | |
You know a lot of you don't. | 12:58 | |
See once they get us here, they know that it's kinda | 13:01 | |
hard once you get here to get anywhere else | 13:07 | |
'cause after you been here one semester, | 13:11 | |
your grades like so bad that you can't go nowhere else. | 13:14 | |

So they get us there, now we're stuck here. | 13:27 | |
And then start wheedling down on the money, | 13:30 | |
especially when you start raising a little hell. | 13:34 | |
They put that you're a Communist down on your records. | 13:36 | |
Say he's a Communist, he can be easily pushed over | 13:38 | |
to the other side so don't give him no money. | 13:41 | |
That's what they do see and they gonna do the same | 13:43 | |
thing with any of you who start fighting but you gotta | 13:45 | |
learn, you gotta fight, you got to fight for your humanity. | 13:47 | |
Like all of us in the same bag whether we realize it or not. | 13:50 | |

We want a black advisor selected only by direct | 14:02 | |
consultation of black students. | 14:05 | |
How in the hell are them white people over there | 14:08 | |
in Allen Building going to select a black advisor for me? | 14:11 | |
They don't know what black people are. | 14:17 | |
They don't know who can relate to us. | 14:19 | |
The only way they can get a black advisor in here | 14:21 | |
is for them to consult black students and find out | 14:23 | |
what a black advisor is and then we'll approve | 14:26 | |
the man who comes in because if we don't approve him, | 14:28 | |
he ain't gonna be no advisor for us, no way. | 14:30 | |
It ain't gonna do them no good. | 14:32 | |

Anything that concerns us, we must be consulted. | 14:41 | |
You can't like go somewhere and talk about us for us. | 14:46 | |
If you're gonna talk about me, I wanna be there. | 14:52 | |
'Cause I figure I can talk about me better than you can. | 14:56 | |

See like they come with this thing, well, when ya'll | 15:01 | |
took over this building, Doctor Knight was in New York | 15:04 | |
trying to get the money for black students, for | 15:07 | |
black studies program and all that ya'll been asking for. | 15:09 | |
Well, we wasn't there, how we know what conditions | 15:13 | |
he gettin' that money under, we don't | 15:17 | |
know what he doin' up there. | 15:19 | |

We want black students fees, which are presently paid | 15:29 | |
to the Student Union to be earmarked for a black Student | 15:32 | |
Union, it's a weird Student Union all the way around. | 15:35 | |

Ya'll are having control over that thing. | 15:40 | |
So like you know, let's admit it now, ya'll come | 15:45 | |
to this as far as black country goes. | 15:50 | |
Like we don't dig on exactly the same things. | 15:54 | |
And like the Afro American Society works to promote our | 15:57 | |
interests so all that money, them fees we be payin' | 16:02 | |
that go to this white Student Union to bring in jives | 16:09 | |
that we don't dig like Miss Ryder, white James Brown. | 16:13 | |

Like all that money oughta be earmarked for our own | 16:24 | |
Student Union so we can promote our interests on campus. | 16:28 | |
We can like dig on your thing all the time. | 16:33 | |

See now, if this had been so already, like we wouldn't | 16:39 | |
have to be gone trying to get money for our black week | 16:44 | |
thing, you know that, see actually the money that we askin' | 16:48 | |
the administration to give us to help pay for black week | 16:53 | |
is already ours in the first place. | 16:58 | |
We already paid for that money. | 17:01 | |
We shouldn't even have to ask for that. | 17:03 | |
That should already be given to us so we can promote | 17:05 | |
our own culture thing on campus. | 17:07 | |

We want academic achievement in high school to be | 17:16 | |
the only criteria for black students | 17:19 | |
admission to this university. | 17:21 | |

This gets back to that reorientation of the standards. | 17:27 | |
See, them white folk up there in Princeton come out | 17:32 | |
with this SAT jazz and they sent it down to black folk | 17:36 | |
down here in Georgia to give tests to black students | 17:40 | |
who ain't been relatin' to no thing like that at all. | 17:47 | |
I bet you couldn't pass a black IQ test. | 17:51 | |
I bet you couldn't do that. | 17:54 | |

So why in the hell should be judged by a white test? | 17:58 | |
You can't judge black people by a white test. | 18:04 | |
You don't know what we know. | 18:06 | |
Of course we don't know all that white stuff ya'll had to | 18:08 | |
learn, ya'll don't know the black stuff we have to learn. | 18:10 | |
So this ain't no lowering the standards. | 18:14 | |
You just turn 'em around and reorient the things, ya know. | 18:16 | |
So like the students can be relating to it and they can | 18:20 | |
be judged more fairly, I'm sure ya'll | 18:24 | |
got your own hang ups about the SATs. | 18:29 | |
We want the evaluation of the Academic Achievement of | 18:36 | |
black students to disemploy grading, alright. | 18:39 | |
Now back to Duke being a national University. | 18:45 | |
All the universities at Duke supposed to emulating, | 18:50 | |
making this grading system a little different. | 18:54 | |
They've been going like from A minus and A plus | 18:57 | |
and A and B plus, B minus system like that to A, B, C, D | 19:01 | |
to pass fail, Duke goin' the other way. | 19:08 | |

They messin' over all ya'll, messin' up all of us. | 19:12 | |

And then we got an additional hang up because everybody | 19:19 | |
who grades us is white so just about everybody who | 19:23 | |
grades us hates us, so like we ain't gettin' in no way. | 19:27 | |
So white people can't objectively grade black people. | 19:32 | |
You got this thing back in your mind. | 19:36 | |
You can't do it no matter how much you try. | 19:39 | |
You just can't do it so we should not be evaluated | 19:42 | |
by grades given out by white professors. | 19:48 | |
You just can't do it, they can't do it with you. | 19:51 | |
You know they can't do it with me. | 19:53 | |

We want the law in Academic employees to give | 20:00 | |
us the power to determine the basis for working | 20:02 | |
conditions, rights or other employment matters. | 20:04 | |

The administration doesn't want the workers to band | 20:22 | |

system and like we are all under it. | 20:56 | |
All of us got to fight it, their fight is our fight. | 21:00 | |

that a black woman had been hired, granted faculty. | 22:59 | |

This is all to keep us calm, keep us from bucking, | 23:09 | |
shaking, rocking the boat, we didn't know nothin' about it. | 23:16 | |
Duke seems to bring in people who look like us | 23:23 | |
and stick 'em in one or two positions and keep everybody | 23:30 | |
quiet and they come up with jive that they can't find | 23:33 | |
qualified black professors, see, Duke is hung up. | 23:37 | |
These people over here are hung up on this thing about | 23:42 | |
a guy having a PhD from our house is no PhD at all. | 23:46 | |
'Cause they got their PhD's from Yale and Harvard, | 23:50 | |
Princeton, Chicago, they can't teach. | 23:53 | |
