Jean Dominique, Jonathan Demme, ak Edwidge Danticat diskite kesyon an: kisa sinema ayisyen ye? Yo egzamine fim ayisyen ansanm avèk fim etranje fè sou Ayiti oubyen an Ayiti. Dominique kwè fim marin ameriken yo te fè pandan okipasyon 1915-1934 la se “sinema ayisyen” paske li te “reyalize sou san pèp ayisyen an.” Li deklare tou si n ap pale kesyon sinema ayisyen, fòk nou kòmanse avèk penti ayisyen, pa egzanp tablo Hector Hyppolite, paske sa reprezante “jan ayisyen an ap gade tèt li.” Li mande poukisa atis pent ayisyen pa janm pentire tablo sou esklavaj oubyen sou vwayaj sou bato negriye, epi li reflechi sou “twomatis pwofon” epi krent pou lanmè ki toujou make pèp ayisyen an. Dominique, Demme, ak Danticat pale sou fim plizyè sineyas, pami yo Rassoul Labuchin, Arnold Antonin, Raoul Peck, Raphaël Stines, Jean-Marie Drot, Maya Deren, Jorgen Leth, John Huston, epi lòt moun.
Jean Dominique, Jonathan Demme, and Edwidge Danticat discuss the question: "what is Haitian cinema?" They examine both Haitian films and films by foreigners about or filmed in Haiti. Dominique contends that US marine footage from the 1915-1934 occupation is "Haitian cinema" because it was produced "upon the blood of the Haitian people." He also says that in order to talk about Haitian cinema, one should also talk about Haitian paintings, such as those of Hector Hyppolite, because they represent the "eye of the Haitian on himself." He wonders why Haitian painters never paint slavery or the Middle Passage, and considers their "deep trauma" and fear of the sea. Dominique, Demme, and Danticat discuss the works of many filmmakers, including Rassoul Labuchin, Arnold Antonin, Raoul Peck, Raphaël Stines, Jean-Marie Drot, Maya Deren, Jorgen Leth, John Huston, and others. They discuss films including "Anita," "Olivia," "Gouverneurs de la Rosée," "Map pale nèt," "Coumbite," "Entre el cielo y la tierra," "Haitian Corner," "Haiti: Dreams of Democracy," "Mais, je suis belle," and "Un tonton-macoute peut-il être un poète?" among many others. These sessions were filmed at Ramapo College in New Jersey.
Cette séance a eu lieu à Ramapo College, New Jersey.
