General orders, no. 53 for the 8th Army Corps, Baltimore

Broadside of orders issued to "Head-Quarters, Middle Department, 8th Army Corps" of Baltimore, Maryland, prior to the elections of November 4, 1863. Military officers were to assist to "prevent all disturbances and violence at or about the Polls," and support judges of election "in requiring an oath of allegiance to the United States," the text of which is also supplied in the document. Order was given by Maj. Gen. Schenk, Lieut. Col. W. H. Chesebrough, and Maj. W. M. Este.
