The first lesson is taken from the second book of Samuel. | 22:26
After the death of Saul when David had returned | 22:31
from the slaughter of the Amalekites, | 22:35
David remained two days in Ziklag. | 22:38
And David lamented with this lamentation | 22:42
over Saul and Jonathan his son. | 22:46
And he said it should be taught to the people of Judah. | 22:49
Behold, it is written in the book of Jasher. | 22:53
He said, thy glory oh Israel | 22:56
is slain upon thy high places. | 23:00
How are the mighty fallen? | 23:03
Tell it not in Gath, | 23:06
publish it not in the streets of Askelon | 23:08
lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, | 23:11
lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exalt. | 23:15
Ye mountains of Gilboa, | 23:20
let there be no dew or rain upon you, | 23:22
nor upsurging of the deep. | 23:25
For there the shield of the mighty was defiled. | 23:28
The shield of Saul not anointed with oil. | 23:32
From the blood of the slain, | 23:36
from the fat of the mighty, | 23:38
the bow of Jonathan turned not back. | 23:40
And the sword of Saul returned not empty. | 23:44
Saul and Jonathan be loved and lovely. | 23:48
In life, in death, they were not divided. | 23:51
They were swifter than eagles. | 23:56
They were stronger than lions. | 23:58
Ye daughters of Israel, | 24:02
weep over Saul who clothed you daintily in scarlet, | 24:04
who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel. | 24:09
How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle. | 24:13
Jonathan lies slain upon thy high places. | 24:18
I am distressed for you my brother Jonathan. | 24:22
Very pleasant have you been to me. | 24:26
Your love to me was wonderful | 24:29
passing the love of women. | 24:32
How are the mighty fallen | 24:34
and the weapons of war perished. | 24:36
This ends the reading of the first lesson. | 24:39
(energetic organ and choral music) | 24:44
The second lesson is taken from Paul's letter | 28:43
to the Corinthians. | 28:46
So we are always of good courage. | 28:49
We know that while we are at home in the body, | 28:51
we are away from the Lord. | 28:55
For we walk by faith, not by sight. | 28:57
We are of good courage | 29:01
and we would rather be away from the body | 29:03
and at home with the Lord. | 29:06
So whether we are at home or away, | 29:08
we make it our aim to please him | 29:11
for we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ | 29:14
so that each one may receive good or evil | 29:19
according to what he has done in the body. | 29:22
For the love of Christ controls us | 29:26
because we are convinced that one has died for all. | 29:29
Therefore all have died. | 29:33
And he died for all | 29:36
that those who live might live no longer for themselves | 29:39
but for him | 29:44 | |
who for their sake died and was raised. | 29:46
From now on therefore, | 29:50
we regard no one from a human point of view, | 29:52
even though we once regarded Christ | 29:56
from a human point of view. | 29:58
We regard him thus no longer. | 30:00
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, | 30:04
he is a new creation. | 30:07
The old has passed away. | 30:09
Behold, the new has come. | 30:11
(light choral music) | 30:46
- | A reading from the gospel according to Saint Mark. | 36:05 |
And Jesus said, | 36:11 | |
the kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed | 36:14
upon the ground | 36:18 | |
and should sleep and rise night and day, | 36:20
and the seed should sprout and grow. | 36:24
He knows not how. | 36:27 | |
The earth produces of itself first the blade, | 36:30
then the ear, | 36:34 | |
then the full grain in the ear. | 36:36
But when the grain is ripe, | 36:39
at once, he puts in the sickle | 36:41
because the harvest has come. | 36:44
And he said, | 36:47 | |
with what can we compare the kingdom of God, | 36:49
or what parable shall we use for it? | 36:52
It is like a grain of mustard seed | 36:57
which when sown upon the ground | 37:00
is the smallest of all the seeds on earth. | 37:02
Yet when it is sown, | 37:06
it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs | 37:07
and puts forth large branches | 37:12
so that the birds of the air can make nest in its shade. | 37:15
With many such parables he spoke the word to them | 37:21
as they were able to hear it. | 37:24
He did not speak to them without a parable. | 37:27
But privately to his own disciples, | 37:30
he explained everything. | 37:34
Here ends the reading of the gospel. | 37:37
It seems like it's usually right about this time of year | 37:45
that we find ourselves dusting off the picnic paraphernalia | 37:50
ready to strike out for the annual family reunion. | 37:55
Carrying boxes and baskets packed to the brim | 37:59
with country ham biscuits, | 38:02
deviled eggs, | 38:05 | |
and old family recipes. | 38:06
Some of us head for the beach. | 38:09
Some of us to the church grounds. | 38:11
Some of us to the old home place | 38:14
to commune with the kin folks, rain or shine. | 38:16
It's usually a matter of tradition | 38:21
that determines where this familial convention will be held, | 38:23
how long it will last, | 38:27
what the agenda will be, | 38:29
and exactly who will be there. | 38:31
If for instance you happen to come | 38:34
from a small town in the south, | 38:36
chances are the entire town will be invited, | 38:38
usually because they really are related to one another. | 38:42
Of course, the food provides | 38:46
much of the incentive for gathering. | 38:48
On what other occasion does overindulgence | 38:51
seem so forgivable? | 38:53
Yet it's not just the sharing of the food | 38:55
but the sharing of stories | 38:59
that makes it all so memorable. | 39:01
Whether by reviewing old family movies, | 39:05
which if we've seen once, we've seen a thousand times, | 39:07
or by retelling familiar tales under a shade tree, | 39:10
a family remembers who they are in such a gathering. | 39:15
Even as stories of new birth | 39:21
are intertwined with those of grief and loss | 39:23
year in and year out. | 39:27
The act of simply coming together | 39:30
is a renewing one for many families. | 39:33
In a similar vein, | 39:37
I believe that our gathering on Sunday morning | 39:38
has a related function. | 39:41
As Christians assembled in this place | 39:43
from around the community, the country, | 39:45
and even from around the world, | 39:47
we gather to remember who we are | 39:50
in the most profound sense. | 39:52
A forgiven people | 39:56
reconciled to God and to one another, | 39:58
here to glorify God and to thank God. | 40:01
But unlike the kind of remembering | 40:05
we associate with looking back wistfully | 40:08
on the good ole days at a family reunion, | 40:10
the memory we lift up, | 40:13
specifically as Christians, | 40:15
points us toward the future, | 40:18
not simply toward the past. | 40:20
Saint Paul reminds us in today's epistle lesson, | 40:23
Christ died for all | 40:27
that those who live might live no longer for themselves, | 40:30
but for him who for their sake died and was raised. | 40:34
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, | 40:39
he or she is a new creation. | 40:43
As the gathered body of Christ, | 40:49
we are called this morning | 40:50
to reflect both on the newness | 40:53
and the creativity of Christ, | 40:55
and to embody what we see, | 40:58
not just to acknowledge or to affirm it. | 41:01
Now this we know can be very difficult. | 41:04
For as creatures of habit, | 41:06
most of us find comfort in routine and sameness. | 41:08
Certainly not in newness and change. | 41:12
But there are those times when the end result | 41:16
makes change worth the temporary threat it can pose. | 41:18
Hopefully we all have a few such stories in our repertoire. | 41:23
I find that as a clergywoman, | 41:28
my presence in certain situations | 41:31
provokes reactions to the changes | 41:33
that increasing members of women in ministry | 41:35
represents within the church. | 41:39
As an example, | 41:41 | |
for my first year out of seminary, | 41:44
I worked as a hospital chaplain | 41:45
where evening on-call responsibilities | 41:48
were always a source of unexpected occurrences. | 41:50
It had been a fairly slow evening compared to some. | 41:55
Only four or five calls. | 41:58
When one of the nurses asked me to check in | 42:01
on a patient scheduled for surgery the next day. | 42:03
She explained that he was facing a serious back operation | 42:07
and that his anxiety was about to get the best of him. | 42:11
But you might want to tread lightly at first, | 42:16
she forewarned me, | 42:18
he's a minister. | 42:19 | |
Not knowing exactly what to make of that comment, | 42:22
I knocked on the door and I heard a faint, come in. | 42:24
I entered the room intending to stay | 42:29
for only a few minutes | 42:31
and introduced myself as the chaplain on-call | 42:33
and asked if I could be of any assistance. | 42:36
No sooner were the words out of my mouth | 42:39
than the patient, back problems notwithstanding, | 42:41
sat straight up in his bed to respond, | 42:45
I beg your pardon? | 42:47
I'm the hospital chaplain | 42:50
and I understand you're having surgery tomorrow, | 42:52
my anxieties and defenses already coming to the fore. | 42:55
What ensued from that point forward | 42:59
was an enlightening study for me | 43:02
in what I now call | 43:04 | |
watching the patient's anxiety decrease | 43:06
as the chaplain's anxiety increases. | 43:08
(congregation laughing) | 43:11
For I had never been quizzed so aggressively | 43:13
about the legitimacy of my call into the ministry | 43:16
outside my own ordination exams. | 43:19
We covered everything, | 43:22
from the biblical basis, or lack thereof, | 43:23
for the ordination of women. | 43:27
To my own understanding of how God calls a person, | 43:29
male or female, into the ministry. | 43:32
Well, after a half hour or so of this type of interrogation, | 43:35
the patient chose to move on to other things, | 43:39
including his own tearful confession of shame and regret | 43:42
over having pushed himself | 43:46
to the point of physical breakdown | 43:49
while preaching 11 straight weeks of revival | 43:51
as he felt more and more distant from God | 43:55
the entire time. | 43:57 | |
He asked if we could have a time of prayer, which we did. | 43:59
Afterwards, he looked at me and he said, | 44:03
I'm happy to be reminded God is not through with me yet. | 44:07
Young lady, up until this very hour, | 44:12
I had done everything within my power | 44:14
to oppose ordaining the likes of you. | 44:16
And here I am confessing my sins, | 44:19
something I never did in front of anybody before. | 44:22
The Lord has used you in a mighty way | 44:26
to touch a broken man like me. | 44:28
Would you be willing to appear on my radio talk show | 44:31
back in West Virginia? | 44:35
Well to have only been ordained for three months, | 44:38
I decided I couldn't be doing | 44:40
as many things wrong as my supervisors were telling me. | 44:42
But far more significant, | 44:46
I was made aware in this instance | 44:48
of the surprising and the powerful ways | 44:51
in which God enables us to connect | 44:54
across the widest chasms in this new creation, | 44:56
both with God and with one another. | 45:00
It is in this connection of love and reconciliation | 45:04
that healing and forgiveness can occur. | 45:07
Not just in the past, but in the present, | 45:10
where newness becomes not a threatening reality, | 45:14
but a life-giving one. | 45:18
Are we willing to be made new creatures | 45:21
through God's love again, and again, and again? | 45:24
It isn't only newness however | 45:32
that touches all of our anxieties | 45:34
and makes us all a little nervous. | 45:36
The whole notion of creating, or being creative, | 45:38
so basic to God's own nature, | 45:42
conjures up for many people | 45:45
the images of frivolity or tip-toeing through the tulips. | 45:46
This is not the sense in which I'm referring to our part | 45:51
in the new creation. | 45:54
Creativity is a way of life, | 45:56
Jesus himself being the master exemplar, | 46:00
that considers birthing to be holy, | 46:03
and puts trusting ahead of controlling, | 46:07
fruitfulness ahead of passivity, | 46:10
reconciliation ahead of separation, | 46:14
celebration and thanksgiving ahead of skepticism | 46:18
and defensiveness. | 46:21
Creativity is a form of discipline | 46:23
which makes demands on one's self and one's potential. | 46:26
There is no birth without labor. | 46:30
But it is also the most fulfilling way of life. | 46:33
And as Jesus demonstrated, | 46:36
the pain of birthing has transcended | 46:38
when the ecstasy of birthing is so great. | 46:40
Jesus pointed out time and again | 46:45
that trust is the essential component of faith | 46:48
in this new creation. | 46:51
A willingness to let go of the old | 46:54
in order to bring forth the new. | 46:56
Often to meet with God's mysterious intervention | 46:59
in the form of paradox, surprise, even humor. | 47:02
Sarah laughed to hear that she would become | 47:07
the mother of nations. | 47:10
And I've often wondered about Mary's reaction | 47:12
when Gabriel announced the Messiah's birth. | 47:14
Where would we be today | 47:17
without her willingness to trust in God | 47:18
to make good on his promises, | 47:21
to birth the new creation through her own womb? | 47:23
Mary, through her example of discipleship, | 47:28
even if under unlikely circumstances, | 47:31
lasting all the way from the stable to the early church | 47:34
shows us the way to the new creation, | 47:38
entrusting, and birthing, | 47:40
and answering God's call. | 47:43
Whereas God made the first creation in solitude, | 47:46
God now creates in partnership with Christ, | 47:50
with the Holy Spirit, | 47:54
and with humankind in this new creation. | 47:56
As co-creators with God through Christ, | 48:00
we the church, like Mary, | 48:03
have been entrusted by God with. | 48:06 |
- | the ability to create. | 0:03 |
In our gospel lesson this morning, | 0:06
we heard a reading of the Parable of the Mustard Seed. | 0:09
Here, we see Christ, the storyteller par excellence, | 0:13
utilizing His creativity | 0:18
while trusting His listeners to use their own. | 0:19
In a non-elitist manner of teaching, | 0:23
which is rooted not so much | 0:26
in the authority of the teacher, | 0:28
as in the experience of the listener. | 0:30
Jesus called His followers | 0:33
to make connections between the Kingdom of God | 0:35
and their own world. | 0:38
The paradoxical image of a tiny mustard seed | 0:41
which grows into a shrub large enough | 0:44
that the birds of the air can make it a nesting place, | 0:46
must've caused a ripple of laughter among His listeners. | 0:50
But what more appropriate way | 0:54
to tell about the Kingdom of God | 0:55
than through the use of humor? | 0:57
A way of life so new as to transcend | 0:59
all the old categories for describing faith. | 1:02
As Schopenhauer, the German philosopher, | 1:06
said, "Laughter is the sudden perception of incongruity | 1:08
"between our ideals and the actualities that are before us." | 1:13
Why do we chuckle at a minister | 1:18
that stands up too early in the service? | 1:20
At the idea of the Archbishop of Canterbury | 1:23
slipping on a banana peel? | 1:25
Or of an uninvited four-legged creature | 1:28
joining the processional into Duke Chapel? | 1:30
Which reportedly did happen | 1:33
in the days before air conditioning. | 1:35
We keep hoping to elevate the holy to a place | 1:37
far beyond our earthly habitat. | 1:40
Yet, God has revealed to us that | 1:44
the Kingdom of Heaven is a place | 1:46
where royalty are the poor, | 1:48
where grown men and women become as children, | 1:52
where enemies become best friends, | 1:55
where holiness is hospitality, | 1:59
both human and divine, | 2:01
right in our very own midst. | 2:03
God's joke is on us | 2:07 | |
but He explains the punchline ahead of time. | 2:09
God loves us in spite of ourselves. | 2:13
The essence of paradox as well as humor and creativity | 2:17
is that of making a connection. | 2:22
And Jesus did everything He could | 2:24
to help us make a connection | 2:26
to the One who made us, | 2:28
even unto death on a cross. | 2:30
It's not the image of a tiny seed | 2:33
which grows into a shrub large enough | 2:36
to provide all the birds of the air with a nesting place. | 2:38
An apt description of the unlikely, | 2:43
yet absolutely miraculous, | 2:46
connections within this new creation. | 2:48
Breaking down the barriers | 2:51
that formerly divided the world into us and them. | 2:53
Christ reveals God's truly creative power | 2:57
as that of reconciliation. | 3:00
The connection has been made once and for all | 3:03
through Christ between God and the people of God. | 3:06
Clearly, the old paradigms have passed away. | 3:12
Behold trusting, birthing, reconciling in love. | 3:15
All herald the inbreaking of this new creation. | 3:20
An American poet by the name of Chuck Lathrop | 3:26
successfully captures this holistic image | 3:29
of the new creation and what it means for the Church | 3:31
in a poem entitled, In Search of a Round Table. | 3:35
Concerning the why and what and how and who of ministry, | 3:41
one image keeps surfacing. | 3:46
A table that is round. | 3:49
It will take some sawing to be round-tabled, | 3:52
some redefining and redesigning. | 3:57
Such redoing and rebirthing of narrow, long Churching | 4:00
can painful be for people and tables. | 4:05
But so was the cross. | 4:10
A painful too table of giving and yes. | 4:12
And from such death comes life. | 4:18
From such dying comes rising. | 4:20
In search of round tabling. | 4:23
Our mutual search for round table | 4:27
brings us together this morning | 4:30
specifically in the celebration of Holy Communion. | 4:32
It is here that we encounter the hospitality of God, | 4:36
the great lover of banquets, | 4:40
and servant of humankind | 4:42
as she receives us, nurtures us, | 4:45
and envelops us in an all-embracing love. | 4:48
A nesting place for all who will come. | 4:52
A family reunion for all times. | 4:56
Here, we learn to be guest | 4:59
in order that we may become host and hostesses in the world. | 5:01
For as God is both host and guest to us | 5:07
in the incarnation, | 5:10
so we, as God's guest, | 5:12
are called to embody God's hospitality. | 5:14
Going forth in the world to love and to be loved. | 5:17
Sowing seeds of justice and peace, | 5:22
nurturing them to fullness of growth. | 5:25
And how do we respond to such a feast of blessings | 5:29
as those that God has spread before us? | 5:32
By praying the deepest prayer there is: Thank you. | 5:36
By being still with God's gifts. | 5:41
By savoring it for all it's worth to us and all humanity. | 5:44
The poet Lathrop continues in search of a round table. | 5:52
For God has called a people, | 5:57
not them and us. | 6:00 | |
And all are invited to wholeness and to food. | 6:02
Round tabling means being with, | 6:07
a part of, together, and one. | 6:10
It means room for the Spirit, | 6:15
and gifts, and disturbing, profound peace for all. | 6:18
And it is we in the present who are mixing | 6:24
and kneading the dough for the future. | 6:27
We can no longer prepare for the past. | 6:30
I invite you to celebrate with joy this day, | 6:36
the new creation which is our home. | 6:40
Gathering at the round table of Christ | 6:43
which nurtures and sustains us through all things, | 6:45
even the powers of sin and death. | 6:49
We remember the past | 6:52
as we prepare for the surprising future. | 6:54
The old has passed away. | 6:58
Behold, the new has come! | 7:01
Thanks be to God. | 7:06 | |

in the words of the Apostle's Creed. | 10:46
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, | 10:51
maker of heaven and earth. | 10:55
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord | 10:57
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, | 11:01
born of the Virgin Mary, | 11:04
suffered under Pontius Pilate. | 11:06
Was crucified, dead, and buried. | 11:09
The third day, He rose from the dead. | 11:12
