- | Brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, | 59:59 |
you've heard testimony, given that Robert Whitridge Estill | 1:00:08
has been duly and lawfully elected | 1:00:13
to be a bishop of the church of God, | 1:00:17
to serve in the Diocese of North Carolina. | 1:00:20
You've been assured of his suitability, | 1:00:27
and that the church has approved him | 1:00:30
for this sacred responsibility. | 1:00:35
Nevertheless, if any of you know any reason | 1:00:40
why we should not proceed, let it now be made known. | 1:00:47
Is it your will that we ordain Robert a bishop? | 1:00:57
- | That is our will. | 1:01:02 |
- | Will you uphold Robert as bishop? | 1:01:04 |

Likewise, the apostles prayed | 1:01:25
before they appointed Matthias, | 1:01:27
to be one of their number. | 1:01:30
Let us therefore follow their examples, | 1:01:33
and author our prayers to Almighty God, | 1:01:37

There are two tentative reasons why I dare to preach | 2:07
this sermon today. | 2:11
One of them is, that I am the son of a Tar Heel, | 2:13
who has always wanted publicly to express his gratitude | 2:17
for his father's North Carolina heritage. | 2:21
When instead my mother's stronger South Carolina | 2:26
tradition forbade me from doing so. | 2:29
The other is that they first bishop of North Carolina | 2:33
John Stark Ravenscroft, once suffered an embarrassing | 2:39
experience in my church in Washington D.C. | 2:44
And belatedly I have wanted to apologize to him for it, | 2:48
he was preaching during the early years of the 19th | 2:52
century from the pulpit of St. John's Church. | 2:56
Which for some reason was fitted into iron tracks, | 3:01
laid on the floor to permit shifting the pulpit | 3:04
from the front of the chancel | 3:08
toward the center of the church. | 3:11
As Bishop Ravenscroft later old the story, | 3:14
he said "The pulpit ran away with me while I was preaching." | 3:18
(congregation laughs) | 3:23
It had been wheeled out of it's place | 3:26
and fastened with a snap, and I was conscious | 3:28
of the distinguished and notable audience before me. | 3:33
And was preaching to them with vigorous earnestness, | 3:37
and all of the sudden I felt the pulpit beneath me | 3:41
gliding away with me. | 3:45
(congregation laughs) | 3:47
Faster and faster towards the side wall of the church, | 3:48
it was moving, and gaining rapidly as we went. | 3:52
The congregation was agitated, I was helpless, | 3:58
and I assure you I was considerably out of countenance | 4:02
when we stopped suddenly and with bump at the end of | 4:06
our notable journey. | 4:10
Well I tell that as a sort of historical footnote | 4:13
to the career of your first bishop, as a heartfelt apology | 4:17
and also as a hope that a descendant of Chapel Hill | 4:22
graduates will not be so treated in this great building. | 4:27
(congregation laughs) | 4:31
I am proud to be in North Carolina, | 4:37
and among people who as we say, are my own kin. | 4:41
I am proud to be here with your bishop elect, | 4:46
whom I have known intimately for 30 years | 4:50
as a friend and a colleague. | 4:52
Until I reread the gospel appointed for this service | 4:57
of consecration, I never thought of the obvious connection | 5:01
between Jesus appearance to the disciples after | 5:05
the resurrection, and that of someone like a bishop | 5:08
elect who appears before us today. | 5:12
Both in a way come unrecognized, | 5:17
and both must first show signs of authenticity | 5:21
of who they are. | 5:26 | |
In Saint John's gospel, Jesus came and stood among them | 5:29
and blessed them, and then showed them his hands | 5:34
and his side. | 5:37 | |
Yet only when he had revealed himself before them, | 5:40
were they filled with joy. | 5:43
Only when they were convinced by wounded hands, | 5:47
and a pierced side, that it was Jesus, | 5:50
could they hear for the second time his words of blessing, | 5:54
"Peace be with you." | 5:59
And what makes this poignant now, | 6:03
is that this is precisely what we are seeing | 6:07
and hearing this morning. | 6:11
A man comes among us in this service, | 6:14
and we ask for marks of authenticity. | 6:16
In a few moments he will show some of them to us. | 6:22
His hands and his side. | 6:25
And in the words of the examination, | 6:29
he will tell us the kind of person he is, | 6:31
and what we would seek to be. | 6:35
He will tell us, that he has persuaded by God, | 6:38
that God has called him to the office of bishop. | 6:41
And we look for assurances that his answer is true. | 6:45
And then and perhaps only then like the disciples | 6:52
will we be filled with joy and finally hear him | 6:56
when he says to us as does his lord, | 7:01
"Peace be with you, receive the holy spirit." | 7:04
Those of you elected Robert Estill Bishop Coadjutor | 7:09
of North Carolina, had some idea about him | 7:14
when you voted for him. | 7:18
And others of you since have heard and seen for yourself | 7:20
something about this man. | 7:25
Many of us here today know him well as friend and a pastor. | 7:29
And our presence at this service indicates our respect | 7:35
and our affection for him. | 7:39
But none of us knows him as a bishop. | 7:42
It is a little like the disciples reaction to Jesus | 7:47
after the resurrection in that locked room. | 7:49
They weren't quite sure about him. | 7:54
Even about the Jesus that they had loved and followed | 7:57
until he proved himself to them. | 8:01
And he did this you might say by deed, more than by word. | 8:05
He showed them who he was. | 8:10
The final question of the new bishop's exanimation, | 8:15
which we will hear in a moment asks this, | 8:19
"Will you be merciful to all, show compassion to the poor, | 8:23
"and strangers, and defend those who have no helper?" | 8:28
The other seven questions ask important things about | 8:35
the bishop's faith. | 8:39
His life in the church. | 8:41
His willingness to defend the faith | 8:42
and himself to be loyal to it, and to his fellow members. | 8:45
But this final question of the examination | 8:50
is the one where he is asked to show us himself. | 8:54
The real Robert Estill in his role as bishop | 8:59
in the Church of God. | 9:04
Your actions in behalf of others | 9:07
are important to us we say. | 9:11
Can we count on you to be merciful, compassionate, | 9:15
and strong for those who are weak? | 9:18
And his answers will be the marks of his true authenticity | 9:22
as a shepard, more than his Orthodoxy, | 9:28
or Ecclesiastical zeal. | 9:33
More than his adherence to form and substance. | 9:35
Rather what he is, and what he will become | 9:40
in whatever years are given him to serve. | 9:44
Will mark him as a true man, called of God, | 9:48
whom people will want to follow gladly. | 9:52
A bishop is a servant of the church. | 9:58
A symbol of continuing life in the church, | 10:01
who is known by the laity as much as by his fellow priests. | 10:05
And one mark as I see it is | 10:12
to establish a close relationship with people. | 10:13
Getting to know them, by going out to them, | 10:18
rather than waiting on dignity for them to come to him. | 10:23
This is a diverse diocese of tobacco lands, | 10:28
of small and medium sized cities. | 10:34
Of great universities, and of research centers. | 10:37
It is a beautiful land with a strong Episcopal tradition. | 10:43
And the bishop must not only be a pastor to his clergy | 10:47
and their families, but a pastor to lay | 10:51
men and women as well. | 10:55
And not just to Episcopalians. | 10:57
He must then for all men and women, in behalf of Christ | 11:01
merciful, compassionate, and strong in his own life | 11:05
as a friend to those who have no friend. | 11:10
The great bishops of our church as I see them, | 11:15
have been bigger men than merely Episcopal officials. | 11:19
They have been known in their diocese as | 11:24
Christian statesmen. | 11:26
And they have been looked to by people | 11:29
of all religious persuasions. | 11:31
As one man, Samuel Shoemaker, who influenced | 11:35
Bob Estill early religious life wrote over a generation ago, | 11:39
"The great crying need", he said, | 11:46
"Of the Christian church today, is for the original | 11:48
"firsthand spiritual pioneer, who blazes trails. | 11:52
"We have got--" Sam Shoemaker said, | 11:59
"Too many tame, time serving Ecclesiastical fellows | 12:01
"who can keep up a system. | 12:06
"But too few who believe that the Holy Spirit | 12:08
"still makes men new and wants full sway over them." | 12:12
You bishop elect knows the truth of those words. | 12:20
And he will be wise to remember when he assumes his office. | 12:23
The church does indeed need a spiritual pioneer. | 12:28
Who will blaze trails in the woods, | 12:34
and the streets of North Carolina. | 12:37
Out of his own deep conviction, | 12:40
that the bishops is not managerial function, | 12:43
but a living sign of the church's servant-hood. | 12:48
He comes among you as a servant to proclaim good news. | 12:52
Professing a religion that can | 12:57
not always be fully articulated. | 12:59
But which is made known through the lives of men and women. | 13:02
The marks of his hand and his side, | 13:08
should be marks of a man, who understand sometimes | 13:11
from painful failure and solitude and reflection, | 13:15
that the church's ministry is basically pastoral. | 13:20
Or in knowing people, one becomes a profit, | 13:25
and in standing before them, one serves as a priest. | 13:31
The shepard must first know his flock and love them, | 13:38
and perceive above all things that God calls him | 13:42
to serve them rather than to be served by them. | 13:46
And thus that final question of the examination, | 13:52
when he is asked to promise his faithfulness | 13:56
in caring about others. | 13:59
Implies what is expected of your bishop, | 14:01
as he lives out his life in the company of people | 14:04
who like him also seek to be in touch | 14:08
with that which is holy. | 14:12
It is the holiness of God that cannot be fully grasped. | 14:14
Which is best expressed in the way we treat one another. | 14:18
Fellow Episcopalian who differs from | 14:24
us in worship or in thought. | 14:27
Fellow Christian and some ecumenical venture. | 14:31
Fellow human being who like us is confronted | 14:35
with daily crises to which together | 14:39
we seek to bring reasonable solutions. | 14:43
So much seems to be asked of a bishop in this church. | 14:48
And yet in the end it may be perhaps | 14:55
simpler than we imagine. | 14:57
But what is asked is please to show us his hands | 15:00
and his side, his real self. | 15:05
So that we can see a real man, and hear loving | 15:09
instead of authoritative words. | 15:13
Kindly instead of harsh commands. | 15:17
Merciful, strong, statements of hope, | 15:21
when we are the most troubled and unsure. | 15:25
Bob my brother. | 15:33 | |
About 10 years ago, when you were considering election | 15:38
to bishop in another diocese we went for walk | 15:42
in the fields of Virginia. | 15:46
My comment to you then was that you were too nice a guy | 15:50
to be a bishop. | 15:54 | |
(congregation laughs) | 15:55
And that you could better serve people as a parish minister. | 15:57
Part of me still thinks that. | 16:02
Although you, and I hope I have grown | 16:05
since that day in the country. | 16:08
And the niceness has been tempered by experience | 16:12
in several tough and demanding ministries. | 16:16
What I would say to you now however, | 16:22
is to be the nice guy you are. | 16:24
The kind of person your co-consecrators will ask | 16:28
in a minute whether you intend to be | 16:33
in your relationship to the people in North Carolina. | 16:35
For they need bishop who will love them. | 16:39
In the ways that you so amply have shown that you can do. | 16:43
In your pastoral and your | 16:49
friendly relationships with people. | 16:51
Those of us that are your intimate friends, | 16:55

And we hope that your C.Q. will shine through your | 17:11

seminary ministry. | 17:17
In short Bob we don't want you to change very much. | 17:20
We want to recognize you when you come among us, | 17:24
to see the same hands we have known. | 17:28

We will have you to remember, one of your predecessors | 17:43
in this diocese, Bishop Cheshire. | 17:47
Who founded Saint Phillip's Church in Durham | 17:50
exactly 100 years ago. | 17:53
And who when he died was buried | 17:56
in the vestments of a deacon. | 17:59
Because as he said he looked to his years as deacon, | 18:02
as among his most productive and joyous. | 18:06
We want you to remember men like him. | 18:11
When you spoke to the annual convention in Charlotte | 18:16
in January, you concluded your remarks | 18:20
in what for those of us who know you is vintage Estill. | 18:23
By stating your conviction that this is God's world, | 18:30
and that he is in it shaping it and us when we let Him | 18:35
to His own purpose and ends. | 18:40
That sounds like you Bob. | 18:45
And so did the next and final sentence when you said, | 18:48
"When we are open to this, each day can be an exciting | 18:52
"challenge to us, and to the great church | 18:56
"of which we are members." | 19:00
