Jounalis, sitou jounalis radyo, ap resevwa kout telefòn menasan.
An uneasy calm has settled over Port-au-Prince, weeks after the Saint Jean Bosco massacre and the 17 September coup d'état that overthrew General Henri Namphy, as the population braces itself for the possibility of more violence. After taking power, Namphy promised "total peace" but this is, according to Jean Dominique, "the peace of the cemetery." Journalists, particularly radio journalists, are receiving threatening phone calls. At Radio Haiti, the journalists have learned to hang up and ignore most threats, but not when the threats are coming from Franck Romain, the Macoute turned Port-au-Prince mayor who ordered the Saint Jean Bosco massacre. In the early morning hours of 13 and 20 August, aggressors threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at Radio Haiti. When Radio Haiti reported these events to Colonel Acedius Saint-Louis, Minister of Information, who had promised that journalists would be able to exercise their profession safely, he trivialized the threats. It is clear that Romain is behind the threats. Less than fifteen days after the Saint Jean Bosco massacre, an editorial appeared in a certain weekly paper (Le Petit Samedi Soir), which claimed that those who committed the violence had been "encouraged by the adventurers of the microphone" (i.e. radio journalists). In this same editorial, entitled "Un charnier démocratique" ("A democratic mass grave"), they trivialize the death of Dominican journalist Carlos Grullon, who was killed in the 29 November 1987 electoral violence, as being insignificant compared to all the Haitians killed by the Dominican Republic in 1937. This newspaper is unsparingly affectionate to Namphy, which it refers to as "Henri," and claims that those who opposed him (from the soldiers who overthrew him to peasant farmers to the victims of Saint Jean Bosco) did not appreciate what a great man he was. Dominique emphasizes that Radio Haiti has never hesitated to give a platform to the soldiers who are denouncing army abuses, to call for an end to soldiers who terrorize the poor, and to call for justice -- but never for vengeance. And so threats against Radio Haiti begin again.
