what God has done, is doing, and will do. | 39:38
What has been, what is, and what is yet to be. | 39:44
Thus today, on the Sunday after All Saints' Day, | 39:49
we gather together to rejoice over God's gift to us | 39:55
of the saints of the ages, and of the saints of our own day. | 40:00
Peter, Paul, John, Mary, Dorcas, St. Augustine, | 40:04

Thomas R. Kelly, Thomas a Kempis, John Calvin, | 40:25
Martin Luther, Martin Luther King, Jr., Pope John XXIII, | 40:30
Dag Hammarskjold, Mother Teresa, one of the true saints | 40:35
of all ages, and blessed are we | 40:42
that she is living in our day. | 40:44
These and others in that great cloud of witnesses, | 40:47
living and dead, who surround us and support us | 40:50
through the love and grace of God, | 40:54
day by day and moment by moment. | 40:56
Thomas Merton, one of this century's | 41:00
true mystics and saints, | 41:03
writes in a little book of his entitled, "He is Risen." | 41:06
"True encounter with Christ liberates something in us, | 41:10
"a power we did not know we had, | 41:16
"a hope, a capacity for life, a resiliency, | 41:19
"an ability to bounce back, a capacity to grow and change, | 41:24
"a power of creative transformation." | 41:30
A power of creative transformation is ours | 41:35
when we encounter the living Christ. | 41:39
And then we read, and hear the word, | 41:42
as John's vision in Revelation gives it to us. | 41:45
John writes, "These magnificent words | 41:50
"which have been read so many, many times | 41:52
"through the centuries, and I, John, saw a vision. | 41:55
"A new heaven and a new earth, the Holy City, | 42:01
"the New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, | 42:05
"and I heard a great voice saying, | 42:09
"'The dwelling of God is with men. | 42:12
"'He will dwell with them and they shall be his people. | 42:15

"'and death shall be no more, neither shall | 42:29
"'there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, | 42:32
"'for the former things have passed away.'" | 42:36
And then John writes, "He who sat upon the throne said, | 42:41
"'Behold, I make all things new.'" | 42:44
What a powerful, majestic, moving, | 42:51
beautiful word from the Lord our God! | 42:54
You really feel like singing and standing | 42:57
and singing the Doxology, or just standing | 43:00
and shouting to God, "Be the glory!" | 43:02
One of the really sad and unfortunate and undesirable | 43:08
experiences of our day today, at least for me, anyhow, | 43:11
is the realization of how many people have read, | 43:17
or are reading, writings by Hal Lindsey and others like him. | 43:19
Lindsey's book, "The Late, Great Planet Earth," | 43:26
is supposed to have sold, what, five or six million copies? | 43:28
Another book of his, "A New World is Coming," | 43:33
already sold a couple million. | 43:36
But in the eyes of most New Testament scholars, | 43:39
these writings of his and others like his, | 43:41
are pure distortions of the word of God in Revelation. | 43:44
Lindsey and other like him have simply done their best | 43:49
to ruin or destroy or pervert the power | 43:54
and beauty and meaning of the book of Revelation. | 43:57
A message of hope has been made by them a message of fear. | 44:00
A message of promise has been made by them | 44:05
a message of doom. | 44:07
A message of life has been made by them | 44:09
a message of destruction. | 44:12
In John's vision, he hears a great voice say, | 44:15
"God will wipe away every tear from their eyes, | 44:20
"and death shall be no more. | 44:23
"Neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore | 44:24
"for these former things have passed away. | 44:28
"And then, he who sat upon the throne said, | 44:30
"'Behold, I make all things new.'" | 44:32
Oh, how we need that creative transformation! | 44:37
How we need all things to be made new by God in and through | 44:41
the power and the grace of Jesus Christ today. | 44:45
No more doom, no more destruction, no more misery, | 44:48
no more fear, no more threat, no more Hell. | 44:53
Here we have, not only a vision of John, | 44:59
but a promise, a pledge, a commitment, | 45:03
a new covenant of God | 45:07
with all of God's children, you and me. | 45:09
Let's note carefully two or three things about these verses. | 45:15
First of all, whatever happens, John says, it will be new. | 45:19
There will be a change, a transformation, | 45:24
a re-creation, a new heaven and a new earth. | 45:26
The Holy City, the New Jerusalem. | 45:30
The old has been tried and tested | 45:33
and found unworthy and unwanted. | 45:36
It's the new that is needed to fulfill | 45:39
God's will for us, and for all people. | 45:42
Second, whatever happens, it will happen | 45:46
as in a city on the earth, and not as some cloud | 45:50
out in the sky, not out there or up there | 45:54
or over there, wherever there is. | 45:57
The New Jerusalem, the Holy City, | 46:00
is to come down from heaven to this earth, | 46:03
to the new earth, to the transformed and recreated earth. | 46:06
It will be as a city, so that we will know, | 46:11
truly know, what community, what living with, | 46:17
what being together and being dependent upon, | 46:21
is really all about. | 46:25
Not city though, as most of us think | 46:27
and know of cities as hellholes today, | 46:30
but along the lines of St. Augustine's The City of God. | 46:33
A city, a community, a place where we know and are known. | 46:39
Third, though, this dwelling of God is to be with us. | 46:44
That is, with God's people. | 46:49
Listen, if you will, to how beautifully, | 46:51
and undeniably, and unalterably, | 46:53
we are bound to God, and God is bound to us! | 46:56
John asserts here, with real daring, | 46:59
the glorious fellowship that we are to know | 47:02
with God and with one another. | 47:04
He says, "The dwelling of God is with men." | 47:06
That is, with us. | 47:10 | |
Then, so that we will understand clearly, | 47:12
he repeats the words, "God will dwell with them." | 47:14
Then the hope that John gives us is stated once again. | 47:21
"They shall be God's people." | 47:26
And then finally, recalling for us the Garden of Eden, | 47:30
the Exodus Covenant, the New Covenant of Jeremiah, | 47:35
and the everlasting covenant given us in Jesus Christ, | 47:38
he says, "God himself will be with them." | 47:41
And so, my friends, John's word from God, | 47:47
is that whatever God is to do in the new creation | 47:51
in the age to come, is, he says, it will be new. | 47:55
It will be as a city here on earth, | 48:01
and God will be our God, and we will be the people of God. | 48:04
But then John goes on. | 48:10
For the first time in all of the book of Revelation, | 48:12
here in the 21st chapter, with certainty, | 48:17
we hear the voice of God, the voice from the throne, | 48:20
the voice of power and wisdom and majesty which says-- | 48:23
remember, this is the first time | 48:27
in the whole book that God Himself has spoken-- | 48:28
"Behold, I make all | 48:32
things new." | 48:36 | |
This, it seems to me, is the word | 48:41
that the saints of the ages have proclaimed | 48:43
and witnessed to and lived out, | 48:45
that is the word that the saints of this day | 48:47
and of every day have tried to get us to know | 48:49
and experience and believe and live out. | 48:52
I can't help but feel, | 48:57
and feel very, very deeply | 49:00
this morning, that whoever God is, and wherever God is, | 49:02
as God looks upon the face of this earth | 49:07
as you and I know it, and as all God's children know it, | 49:10
God surely must be saying, "All things on earth | 49:14
"really do need to be made new." | 49:17
It is true, so very, very true. | 49:24
I don't know about other generations, | 49:28
I don't know about other days, other times. | 49:31
I don't know if this is the most evil, | 49:33
the most wicked, the most sinful generation | 49:36
that has ever been, and I'm not so sure | 49:39
that those who contend that know either. | 49:41
But in terms of who we are as a people, how we relate | 49:46
to one another, and whether we are truly God's people, | 49:50
living according to God's love and way, | 49:55
there is no question but what we do, | 49:57
individually and corporately, need to be made new. | 50:00
And the God who created this universe, | 50:08
the God who called it into being, the God who made you | 50:11
and me and every other child upon this earth. | 50:16
The God who looked out on all that had been made | 50:20
and said, "It is good, indeed, it is very good,." | 50:23
surely is saying this morning not just, | 50:26
"I make all things new," but is surely saying, | 50:29
"I must make all things new." | 50:32
Tears, death, mourning, crying, pain, | 50:38
these former things are to be no more, | 50:44
for "Behold," God says, "I will make all things new." | 50:46
I want to look at these words in two ways this morning. | 50:51
For I believe that God can make things new in this life, | 50:58
and God surely can make things new in the life to come. | 51:03
First of all, God can make things new in this life. | 51:09
There seems to be no way in the life | 51:16
which you and I are called to live, | 51:19
no way that we can avoid tears and death | 51:22
and mourning and crying and pain, | 51:26
absolutely no way anyone of us can avoid these. | 51:28
I saw some words on the wall of a psychiatrist | 51:33
friend of mine recently, where the writing went like this: | 51:36
"Life is full of hardship and duress. | 51:41
"For everything else, be thankful." | 51:46
And so it is, I guess. | 51:51
There is no way to avoid a life that does not need | 51:54
to be made new this moment, today, right now. | 51:57
And then these words, my friends, | 52:03
how painfully, how tragically aware | 52:09
we must be this morning, | 52:13
of our need to be made new as a people, | 52:17
for I'm sure that most all of us have seen the news | 52:22
and have read the papers, showing the tragic, | 52:25
senseless, barbaric slaughtering, | 52:30
killing of four persons, | 52:33
by whomever, and whoever they are, | 52:36
they are sick and torn and insane, | 52:40
surely. | 52:44 | |
It makes one ask the question, | 52:47
"What is there in the heart and soul of us, of any of us, | 52:49
"that would allow that sort of behavior to take place?" | 52:55
In one sequence which I saw | 52:58
on the 11 o'clock news on channel 11 last night, | 53:00
it showed a man running away from two or three other men. | 53:06
And as he ran, he had two guns, | 53:10
one in each hand and he was firing | 53:12
at those from whom he was running, | 53:15
and they were no more than 8 or 10 feet away. | 53:18
How in God's name | 53:22 | |
can one human being | 53:26
do that to another human being? | 53:28
What is going on? | 53:33 | |
And last night, and this morning as I reflected on that, | 53:37
the question came to my mind, "Are we as a people | 53:40
"in this land going to relive the '60s | 53:43
"all over again as we begin the '80s?" | 53:46
God forbid. | 53:51 | |
Vividly, painfully, plainly, tragically, | 53:54
sadly, brokenheartedly, we see and know and surely | 53:57
believe that things really need to be made new in this life. | 54:01
What can we do? | 54:07 | |
I know, no one here this morning | 54:08
really had anything directly to do | 54:12
with what happened in Greensboro yesterday. | 54:14
All of us are brokenhearted and sick. | 54:17
So we ask, not why did it happen but what can we do? | 54:21
One thing I believe is that when the call comes, | 54:27
and it will in the next few days, | 54:30
for those of us who believe in right | 54:32
and justice and human dignity to stand up | 54:34
for those who were attacked, | 54:37
every one of us here, and every other person | 54:39
that we can influence can stand clearly | 54:43
and firmly for two things. | 54:46
One is that we believe that those who did | 54:50
the shooting and the attacking yesterday | 54:52
should be brought to trial quickly, | 54:54
and kept in custody | 54:57
so that other human beings may be safe. | 54:58
A second thing is that equal protection under the law | 55:02
by the police should be provided for all persons. | 55:04
If the Klan gets police protection, | 55:09
and it has every time I have ever seen | 55:12
a news clipping of any of their parades or demonstrations, | 55:14
if the Klan gets protection from the police, | 55:18
then those who protest the Klan should be protected as well. | 55:21
No, my friends, we do not have to look very far. | 55:25
Just yesterday, and just next door, | 55:30
to see how desperately we need | 55:33
for things to be made new. | 55:37
But then it may not be possible for things | 55:42
to be made new in this life, that may be out for some of us. | 55:44
Indeed it may be out for all of us. | 55:48
It just may be that it will have to be in the life to come | 55:50
that all things will be made new. | 55:53
Perhaps that is why the old Negro spirituals | 55:55
from the South of another generation | 55:58
had much otherworldly theology in them. | 55:59
They knew that there was no hope under their slave masters, | 56:02
under the system as they had to live it, | 56:05
but when that chariot swings low, | 56:07
and someone comes to carry me home | 56:10
where all God's children has shoes, | 56:13
I'm gonna put on my shoes, and you got shoes, | 56:15
I got shoes, all God's children got shoes, | 56:18
and we're gonna put on our shoes | 56:21
and walk all over God's heaven. | 56:22
Perhaps it was because they knew | 56:25
that there was no hope in this life | 56:26
that the theology did have an otherworldliness to it. | 56:29
Or maybe it's because we realize that the fullness of life | 56:35
that is home must be somewhere else. | 56:38
Hermann Hesse, the German poet, writes, | 56:42
"Across the sky the clouds move, | 56:46
"Across the fields the wind, | 56:50
"Across the fields the lost child | 56:52
"Of my mother wanders. | 56:55
"Across the street, leaves blow, | 56:57
"Across the trees, birds cry-- | 57:00
"Across the mountains, far away, | 57:03
"My home must be." | 57:07
Somewhere across, | 57:10
my home must be. | 57:13 | |
Or perhaps it's like Carlyle Marney | 57:17
wrote John Claypool one day. | 57:19
John Claypool is a Baptist minister. | 57:22
His daughter was 10 years old and was dying with leukemia. | 57:25
Marney wrote Claypool just a note, | 57:30
and in it, he admitted that he had absolutely no word | 57:34
to say about the suffering of the innocent. | 57:38
He never had had, and probably never would have. | 57:42
But he said, "I fall back | 57:44
on the idea | 57:48 | |
that God someday will have a whole lot | 57:51
to give account for." | 57:55
And I believe that, I really do. | 58:00
Or, to put it in John's words, | 58:05
"I believe that someday, some way, | 58:07
"some place, somehow, God will make all things new." | 58:09
Every time I walk down the halls, | 58:15
or go in the wards of the Veterans Administration Hospital, | 58:17
every time I am around the Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center | 58:22
or the Center for Mentally Retarded Children at Butner, | 58:25
every time I go to the city jail, | 58:29
or come near the Guess Road Prison, | 58:31
every time I go in or drive by | 58:33
the Cerebral Palsy Hospital and see | 58:37
those children playing out front, | 58:39
every time I see pictures of children | 58:42
or hungry masses of people starving, | 58:44
every time I see somebody whose body or mind | 58:47
or spirit is warped or broken or not whole, | 58:50
every time I'm around someone who is | 58:53
struggling to breathe with emphysema, | 58:55
or is dying with leukemia or some other cancer. | 58:58
Every time I see any child of God | 59:01
not living life to the full, not experiencing life | 59:03
in its wholeness, not knowing the goodness | 59:08
and joy and blessing of life, | 59:10
I say and believe and know that the God in whom I believe, | 59:12
the God of the Old and New Covenants of Love and Life, | 59:16
the God of Moses and Jesus and John, | 59:20
