Selections from the History of Haitian Cinema conversations between Jean Dominique, Jonathan Demme, and Edwidge Danticat. Dominique describes his experience working on MAIS, JE SUIS BELLE and explains why the film was a way of resisting the Duvalier regime. They discuss COUMBITE, the Cuban film based on GOUVERNEURS DE LA ROSÉE, and the Hollywood adaptation of THE COMEDIANS directed by Peter Grenville. They discuss in detail the films of Rassoul Labuchin, particularly ANITA, and the films of Raoul Peck, including HAITIAN CORNER and L'HOMME SUR LES QUAIS. Dominique says that the history of Haitian cinema must begin with Haitian painting. He also tells the story of Charlemagne Péralte's death at the hands of the US marines. They also discuss Raphaël Stines' MAP PALE NÈT, SI M PA RELE with Martha Jean-Claude, and Bob Lemoine's OLIVIA, which was financed by Jean-Claude Duvalier's father-in-law Ernest Bennett. These sessions were filmed at Ramapo College in New Jersey.
