  • Father Jean Pierre-Louis describes recent problems in Savanette, where peasants dechouked a self-styled local leader named Norbert Montero. Montero had demanded that the peasants pay him in order to remain on their land; they rejected and protested his demands, and he ordered them arrested. Pierre-Louis describes land conflicts and other problems that impede the development of the peasants of Savanette. For example, when they do not know the selling price of coffee, speculators can take advantage of them. Father Pierre-Louis, as a liberation theology priest, has been working with the grassroots peasants' organization in Savanette. He says the situation in Savanette is not the same as what occurred at Jean Rabel a year earlier, because he does not believe that peasant farmers will fight against one another. Father Pierre-Louis says that this is not simply a conflict between himself and Montero. He discusses the meaning and objectives of liberation theology. According to Pierre-Louis, claims that the Catholic Church should not engage in political activism, and that the Church should not concern itself with material concerns of earthly suffering, are themselves political. They discuss Aristide's expulsion from the Salesian order, and the role of liberation theology priests in the struggle for liberty.
