The Gospel is from Luke, Chapter 2, | 19:14
Verses 1 through 11. | 19:17
In those days, a degree went out from Emperor Augustus | 19:21
that all the world should be registered. | 19:25
This was the first registration and was taken | 19:28
while Quirinius was governor of Syria. | 19:31
All went to their own towns to be registered. | 19:35
Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee | 19:39
to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem | 19:43
because he was descended from the house | 19:47
and family of David. | 19:49
He went to be registered with Mary, | 19:52
to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. | 19:54
While they were there, the time came for her | 20:00
to deliver her child and she gave birth | 20:03
to her first-born son and wrapped him in bands of cloth | 20:07
and laid him in a manger because there was no place | 20:11
for them in the inn. | 20:15
In that region, there were shepherds in the fields | 20:18
keeping watch over their flock by night. | 20:21
Then an angel of the Lord stood before them | 20:25
and the glory of the Lord shone around them | 20:28
and they were terrified, but the angel | 20:32
said to them, "Do not be afraid, for see, | 20:35
"I am bringing you good news of great joy | 20:40
"for all the people. | 20:43
"To you is born this day in the city of David a savior | 20:45

Church doesn't get much more | 21:14
joyful than this, Christmas, | 21:17
and on a Sunday. | 21:21 | |
All of today's Scriptures, you will note, speak of joy | 21:24
and the hymns Joy to the World. | 21:29
Of course, if you've been to church before, | 21:37
you know that joy can sometimes be a challenge | 21:40
for the church. | 21:44 | |
On most Sundays, the church tends to overdo | 21:46
the imperative mood, filling the air with should | 21:50
and ought and must, | 21:55
do this, don't do that, | 21:58
so some Sunday you come to church | 22:02
feeling fairly good about yourself. | 22:04
Well, we'll fix that. | 22:07
After we have enumerated what's wrong with you | 22:09
and the world, you leave church feeling worse | 22:12
than when you came. | 22:15
I've got a friend who's a psychotherapist | 22:16
and he says that depression is an ecclesial-genic illness. | 22:19
(congregation laughing) | 22:24
Church makes you depressed.
This past fall, a group of students asked me | 22:30
to give a talk and at the end of the talk, | 22:33
one of the listeners said, "Your talk was good, | 22:37
"but it was rather depressing. | 22:42
"You're so critical." | 22:45
And I overheard another student mutter, | 22:48
"Well, he's a preacher. | 22:51
"He's paid to be depressing." | 22:52
(congregation laughing) | 22:53
But not today, | ||
not, no, not this day of joy. | 22:57
And joy can be a challenge, particularly around here, | 23:02
around the university. | 23:07
In academia, joy is uncool. | 23:10
Aristotelian balance, that is the way to go. | 23:15
Oh, our students may work hard, | 23:18
may play harder, | 23:22 | |
but not the faculty. | 23:25
An unrestrainedly joyful person has got to be a bubble brain | 23:28
who hasn't yet taken a mature, sober, balanced, | 23:34
intelligent look at life | 23:37
because after you have pondered | 23:42
the incongruities of life, the absurdities, | 23:45
the discrepancies, a kind of world-weary urbanity sets in | 23:48
and that's why around academia, pessimism always sounds | 23:55
more intelligent than optimism, than joy, | 24:00
more intellectual, but not today, | 24:04
not this day of joy. | 24:10
I think one reason why we are so often devoid | 24:15
of real joy is that joy, real joy, | 24:19
is not self-induced. | 24:25
As many people learn to their sadness this time of year, | 24:28
you can't have joy by wandering every night | 24:33
in December in a shopping mall, you can't switch on | 24:36
joy with a yuletide TV Christmas special. | 24:40
The gift that you thought you just had of have, | 24:47
now that you've got it, how long did that joy last, | 24:52
what, 15 minutes? | 24:57
You'd have to feel very sorry for a person | 25:00
who claimed to feel real, deep, abiding joy | 25:04
after receiving a salad shooter this morning. | 25:08
(congregation laughing) | 25:11
Joy, real joy, is always reflexive, | 25:15
it is responsive, | 25:20
a kind of spontaneous human outburst | 25:21
because something has happened. | 25:25
Joy, it isn't a goal, it isn't an achievement | 25:30
like an M.A. degree. | 25:35
Joy is a byproduct, a kind of gracious spinoff. | 25:38
Let's all get together and do a little joy. | 25:44
No, no, you can't do that, it's a gift, | 25:46
it's a response to something that happens to you. | 25:49
You felt it when the doctor came in to say | 25:55
that that shadow on the X-ray was just that, | 25:59
a shadow, nothing more. | 26:03
Or when she said yes and you knew you didn't deserve it. | 26:05
It was a gift received, joy. | 26:10
And that is why Isaiah the Prophet speaks of joy. | 26:16
Israel is in bondage, everything is dark, | 26:22
garments rolled in blood. | 26:27
The Scripture, the Old Testament comes | 26:30
from a scene of the battlefield and Isaiah sings | 26:33
that people who walked in darkness | 26:38
have seen a great light. | 26:41
Joy. | 26:46 | |
A friend of my recalls when he was a boy in Austria, | 26:49
his family gathered around the radio during the Nazi time | 26:55
in the dark days of World War II and they were surprised | 27:01
to hear the announcement that Allied troops | 27:06
had landed in Normandy | 27:10
and his mother just spontaneously | 27:13
began to weep and she fell to her knees for joy | 27:16
and he remembered the whole family just gathering hands, | 27:24
spontaneously kneeling around the radio. | 27:27
When you get news, deep news, joy. | 27:32
In Luke's story of the birth of Jesus. | 27:39
In those days, a decree went out from the Emperor Augustus | 27:43
that all the world should be registered. | 27:46
There's not much joy there. | 27:52
What you're reading here is a story | 27:55
of oppressed, occupied people. | 27:57
Why were these Jews being registered? | 28:02
Well, the Roman occupation forces | 28:05
can't keep up with these occupied Jews | 28:09
without having them registered. | 28:14
Even if you were a woman like Mary, | 28:17
even if you were expecting a baby, you had to make | 28:19
the long journey back to your husband's hometown | 28:22
and you had to be registered 'cause the emperor | 28:25
said it and that was law. | 28:28
And then in the dark of night, out back in the manger, | 28:33
a baby cries. | 28:38 | |
There is the flutter of wings and shepherds | 28:39
huddling in the dark, cold, are terrified, | 28:43
but the angel says to them, "Don't be afraid, | 28:48
"I bring you good news of joy." | 28:51
And that's why we sing | 28:58
and that's why we're here, | 29:02
Christmas's gracious inclusion. | 29:05
It's a break with the ordinary humdrum expected. | 29:09
Here we are, paying taxes, going about our work | 29:14
on the night shift, getting engaged, having babies, | 29:18
and then something intrudes and we're joyful | 29:21
because something has happened not of our own creation. | 29:26
God has intruded into the natural expected order of things. | 29:31
Christmas is a delightful disruption of the way | 29:36
things usually go. | 29:39
At the incarnation, things are cut | 29:42
loose, they're unglued. | 29:44
Luke says it happened during the Enrollment | 29:48
when Augustus was emperor, | 29:51
when Quirinius was governor of Syria. | 29:54
There's nobody more powerful than the emperor. | 29:58
Nothing is more fixed and final | 30:00
than imperial decrees. | 30:03
That's an old story, the story of the first Christmas. | 30:08
It's the old, same old story of political oppression | 30:13
and political violence and those on the bottom | 30:17
who must obey and those on the top who make decrees | 30:22
and give orders. | 30:26 | |
It was in Bethlehem, but you know it could have happened | 30:28
just as well in Bosnia. | 30:30
It was Augustus Caesar, but it could have also | 30:33
been your boss at the office or the geography teacher | 30:37
during third period or an oncologist. | 30:42
We're always being jerked around by external decrees. | 30:48
What do you do when your life is out of your control, | 30:54
when you're jerked around by forces | 30:58
outside your control, by some external | 31:01
decree handed down from the top? | 31:04
Seems to me there are at least two possible responses. | 31:08
One response is active rebellion, | 31:13
resistance. | 31:18 | |
Get a lawyer, hire a surgeon, get a plan, | 31:19
take matters in hand. | 31:21
When the Emperor Augustus commanded this enrollment, | 31:25
we know that there were massive revolts among the Jews. | 31:30
They did not just passively accept these imperial | 31:35
Roman pagan decrees. | 31:38
During the time of Jesus, it is estimated there may | 31:41
have been as many as 60 different revolts | 31:45
and rebellions, violent attempts to overthrow | 31:48
these Roman overlords. | 31:52
Pick up a gun, take matters in hand, | 31:54
use your initiative, act for change. | 31:57
I find it interesting that none of these political revolts | 32:03
are reported by Luke. | 32:06
He depicts Mary and Joseph just plodding | 32:10
towards Bethlehem rather than rebelling against Rome. | 32:13
What could they do? | 32:18
They were poor, they were on the bottom, | 32:19
they were powerless against so great a force | 32:22
as Emperor Augustus and his legions. | 32:24
Isaiah doesn't call Israel to arms, doesn't urge them | 32:28
to organize and resist, crushed as they are | 32:32
under the heel of Assyria. | 32:35
What hope in that? | 32:38
See, it's interesting that neither Isaiah nor Luke | 32:43
are telling a story about what we do. | 32:47
It's not a story about our initiative | 32:51
against the problems of life 'cause we already | 32:54
know that story. | 32:56 | |
So we got here at the university by taking initiative | 32:58
and having plans and having a program, | 33:01
and while that may lead to temporary solutions, | 33:05
some forward movement to some of the problems | 33:09
that bedevil us in life, a new administration | 33:12
in Washington, this or that piece of legislation, | 33:16
rarely does it lead to real joy | 33:21
because joy, deep throated, abiding joy, | 33:28
is a byproduct | 33:34 | |
of the story of what God does. | 33:37
Mary broke into song, the shepherds danced | 33:43
back to work. | 33:48 | |
Isaiah declared holiday, having witnessed the amazing | 33:50
undeserved, unexpected intrusion | 33:56
of a loving and living God. | 33:59
People are joyful because God has moved, | 34:01
because there is this force loose in the world | 34:06
greater than ourselves. | 34:10
Last night at Bethlehem, we so sensible, | 34:13
down-to-earth, dull, modern, flat people | 34:16
living in a thank you, mother, | 34:22
I would rather do it myself sort of society, | 34:24
we learn to our surprise | 34:29
somebody else is active in the world | 34:34
and our battles with emperors | 34:39
and our struggles with malignancies of body or soul, | 34:41

See, I know, I'm a pastor. | 34:56
I know it is not all right in your life. | 34:59
There are secrets, deep, dark things | 35:03
that trouble you. | 35:06
When bright Christmas is over, you've got to trudge | 35:09
back to the January facts of life. | 35:12
Your strings are being pulled by forces | 35:16
greater than your ability to control, I know. | 35:20
