Ye Yinying (b.1933) is a resident of Zhaixia Village, Pengzhai Town, Heping County, Heyuan City, Guangdong Province. Ye recollects that many people would hope someone would die and have a funeral, so that they could go and help to have some food in return. When Gaolang’s father passed away, Ye’s husband went to offer a hand, but Gaolang’s mother hid all the food to save it for her children. When people helped carrying the coffin and did not get food, they would complain.
