Man | In which I am living | 0:03 |
and in which you're going to continue to live | 0:04
because you will have turbulence and confusion, | 0:06
but then Jesus said, | 0:09
"You can live with this too." | 0:10
Be filled with assurance. | 0:15
Sure, my friends, | 0:18 | |
you're going to have tribulation, | 0:19
but hold your heads up | 0:22
for I have overcome the world | 0:24
and the same power that has been available to me | 0:26
to overcome the world is available to you | 0:29
to overcome the world." | 0:32
I don't know many of you personally, | 0:36
but I dare say that each of us lives in a situation | 0:40
where there is turmoil and trial and tension. | 0:43
And what Jesus is saying | 0:49
is that we can live in these experiences | 0:50
with the assurance that God's love is present with us, | 0:53
that He wants us to be whole persons, | 0:57
that our lives really can hold on when things are tough | 1:00
and that we can live, at least partially, | 1:04
in tune with God's will. | 1:07
Also, we can be persons who are changing the world. | 1:11
We can be instruments in God's plan to change the world | 1:17
to a better place. | 1:20 | |
I have a poster on the wall in my study | 1:23
that has a beautiful scene of a meadow | 1:29
and beautiful green hills in the background. | 1:31
And on this poster are the words, | 1:36
"If we change the world, | 1:38
let it bear the mark of our intelligence." | 1:41
This is often a suffering serving task, | 1:49
but for this purpose, | 1:53
God has created the church. | 1:55
To this task, | 1:58 | |
God has called us | 1:59 | |
to declare that God is still at work | 2:02
to make better the world, even now. | 2:07
I was reading a letter just recently | 2:11
from a young person, | 2:13
who wrote, "Christ saved me, | 2:18
but does this salvation mean that I am to sit back | 2:25
content to be a part of society | 2:28
whose only objective is for me | 2:31
to spend all the time I can | 2:33
making all the money I can | 2:36
to have all the comfort and pleasures I can? | 2:38
Or does this salvation say to me that I now have it made | 2:42
and possess a one-way ticket to heaven? | 2:46
And that all that is required of me | 2:49
is to learn a few Bible passages | 2:51
and ask a few people to come to Jesus? | 2:53
Or did He save me in order that I may be a recruit | 2:57
to work for Him, to work with Him, | 3:00
in changing persons and conditions. | 3:04
So that in Washington DC | 3:08
or in New York City | 3:10 | |
or in Los Angeles or in Orlando or in Durham, | 3:12
if need be, we may in His name, | 3:16
be able to rescue people from ideas and behavior | 3:20
by which lives are being ruined | 3:23
and be able to eliminate," | 3:26
listen to this, " those despicable conditions | 3:28
like the one where two children sit huddled together | 3:32
in a tenement house | 3:36
with one eating a cockroach | 3:39
and the other, holding a dead rat in his hand | 3:42
and saying, 'Mine, doggy, mine, doggy.'" | 3:46
This young person goes on. | 3:54
"Christ has saved me, | 3:55
and my lips can never praise Him enough for doing this, | 3:59
which I could not do for myself. | 4:03
He has saved me for eternity, | 4:07
but He has also saved me so that I may serve Him | 4:11
and others in the here and the now." | 4:15
To you is born a savior. | 4:21
The world's heartbeat | 4:28
may come alive again. | 4:33
Oh, God, | 4:41 | |
help us to hear, | 4:45 | |
to receive and to live out the good news, | 4:48
which came in Jesus Christ, | 4:55
to you, which means to me. | 4:58
To each of us is born a savior, | 5:03
even Christ the Lord. | 5:08
