  • François Benoît of Alpha Communications Network (ACN) discusses TELECO and CONATEL's decision to pull the plug on ACN, claiming that they are illegally providing international phone lines. On September 27, the directors of TELECO and CONATEL arrived at ACN headquarters in Pétionville with men armed with machine guns and proceeded to accuse ACN, then announced that they had cut ACN off due to fraudulent practices. He describes years of tension between ACN and the state-owned telephone monopoly. Benoît says that the paranoia and suspicion underlying these actions remind him of April 26, 1963, in which his family was killed by François Duvalier. Jean Dominique cautions him not to compare the microscopic and the macroscopic. Dominique asks Benoît about his role as foreign minister in Marc Bazin's government during the coup years, which Benoît descibes as an opportunity to help the country from within the government. Benoît then discusses what the Internet is and what it can do for Haiti: according to Benoît, it is an equalizing force that will erase borders for Haitian students and others. Benoît ends by denouncing corruption within TELECO.
