Letters from John W. Preston to Dakers. In letters written prior to the Civil War, he discusses life aboard the frigate U.S.S. ST. LAWRENCE; a voyage from Norfolk, Va. to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and his work as a bookbinder in Washington, D.C. There are five letters written by Preston to his aunt during the Civil War. These letters describe army life, the capture of Winchester, Va., and the march to Martinsburg, Va. (now in W. Va.).
