- | Beloved, the Scriptures teach us that all have sinned | 3:58 |
and come short of the glory of God. | 4:02
We, therefore, stand in need of the acknowledgement | 4:06
of our sinful condition, | 4:11
of repenting of our sins | 4:13
and asking for the forgiveness of Almighty God. | 4:15
So let us pray our prayer of confession. | 4:20
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, | 4:24
we are contrite in heart | 4:27
as we make our confessions before thee. | 4:29
Thou knowest our hearts better than we know them. | 4:33
And still, we need to express our sins | 4:37
in thy presence and before one another. | 4:40
So we acknowledge that we have not beaten our swords | 4:44
into plowshares, nor our spears into pruning hooks. | 4:47
Nations still lifts up sword against nation, | 4:52
and mankind still learns to make war. | 4:56
We who call ourselves by thy name | 5:00
do not act as though we love our neighbors as ourselves. | 5:02
We are more careful to protect our pride | 5:07
than we are to protect our character, as thou does know. | 5:09
Oh God, we often expect the impossible. | 5:15
We have not been poor in Spirit, | 5:19
and yet we assume that we shall enter the kingdom of heaven. | 5:21
We have not been very meek, | 5:25
and yet we act as though we should inherit the earth. | 5:28
We have not been merciful, | 5:32
but here we are now bold enough to ask for mercy. | 5:34
We have not been pure in heart; | 5:39
still, we wonder why we do not see God. | 5:41
And we blame thee oh Father for being so hard to find, | 5:45
sometimes even say that thou are dead. | 5:49
We often are unwilling to endure persecution | 5:53
for righteousness sake, yet we claim the kingdom of heaven. | 5:56
Oh God, we are indeed sinners. | 6:02
We have failed at so many points. | 6:05
Man look upon women as being primarily sex targets | 6:08
rather than persons. | 6:11
Women look upon men as being primarily sources of paychecks | 6:14
and status rather than persons. | 6:17
Employers look upon employees as being primarily cogs | 6:21
in a monetary machine rather than persons | 6:26
whom thou doest love. | 6:29
And employee's care not what happens to the employer | 6:32
so long as he pays them their salary. | 6:35
Many students look upon professors as grade givers | 6:39
rather than as teachers. | 6:42
And many professors look upon students | 6:44
as a necessary evil to professional advancement. | 6:46
Oh God, we are sinners. | 6:51
Save us by thy power. | 6:54
Forgive us, especially for having too little faith. | 6:58
Forgive us for believing that the triumph of righteousness | 7:02
and justice and fairness is too good to be true. | 7:05
Forgive us for believing | 7:10
that the assassins of the world will have the last word, | 7:11
that the rioters and looters | 7:15
are to be the leaders of tomorrow. | 7:17
Forgive us for not in faith, | 7:21
claiming Jesus Christ as our leader, | 7:23
as our Lord and as our Savior. | 7:27
And forgive us all these sins through Christ our Lord. | 7:31
We make our prayer in His name, amen. | 7:36
Beloved, it is a part of the Christian affirmation | 7:43
that God is more interested in forgiving us | 7:47
than we are in being forgiven. | 7:51
But he cannot forgive us | 7:54
until we are from the heart sincerely, | 7:55
fully contrite and repentant, | 7:58
and completely dedicated to living above and beyond sin | 8:01
by his help. | 8:08 | |
When we are thus repentant and ask His forgiveness, | 8:10
He does forgive us. | 8:14
Therefore, if our repentance is profound and sincere, | 8:16
we are forgiven. | 8:20 | |
For the Scriptures say to us, | 8:22
"If we confess our sins, | 8:25
"He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins | 8:26
"and will cleanse us from all uncleanness." | 8:30
This being the case, | 8:35
we should be people filled with thanksgiving | 8:38
that we worship and love such a God. | 8:42
So let us join together our hearts and our voices | 8:45
in a unison prayer of thanksgiving | 8:49
adapted from the book of Jonah. | 8:51
Let us pray. | 8:54 | |
We call to you, Lord, out of our distress. | 8:56
And you answered us. | 9:00
You heard our voices. | 9:01
We said we are cast out from your presence, | 9:03
how shall we again look upon your holy temple? | 9:07
The waters closed in over us. | 9:11
The deep was round about us. | 9:13
Yet you brought up our life from the pit, oh Lord our God. | 9:15
When our souls faded within us, | 9:20
we remembered the Lord, | 9:23
and our prayers came to you into your holy temple. | 9:24
With the voice of thanksgiving, we will sacrifice to you. | 9:29
Deliverance belongs to the Lord, amen. | 9:33

Let us now hear the reading of the Word of God | 13:26
from the book of Acts, chapter four, | 13:29
beginning with verse five. | 13:31
On the morrow, | 13:35 | |
their rulers and elders and scribes | 13:36
were gathered together in Jerusalem, | 13:39
with Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, | 13:42
and Alexander, and all who were on the high priestly family. | 13:45
And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, | 13:51
"By what power or by what name did you do this?" | 13:55
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, | 14:00
"Rulers of the people, and elders, | 14:04
"if we are being examined today concerning a good deed, | 14:07
"done to a crippled | 14:12
"by what means this man has been healed | 14:14
"be it known to you all and to all the people of Israel, | 14:17
"that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, | 14:21
"whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, | 14:25
"by Him, this man is standing before you, well. | 14:31
"This is the stone which was rejected by you builders, | 14:37

"and there is salvation in no one else, | 14:46
"for there is no other name under heaven, | 14:50

Almighty God, we come before thee with our intercessions | 15:53
for others and for ourselves, for we all need thee equally. | 15:59
We come praying for those | 16:06
who are in distress of one sort or another: | 16:08
those who are unemployed, those who are underemployed. | 16:13
We pray for those who have skills to offer | 16:19
but cannot find opportunity to apply their skills | 16:21
to the native society. | 16:24
We intercede for those who find themselves overworked, | 16:29
those who have more responsibility placed on their shoulders | 16:36

but who nevertheless are expected to fulfill | 16:43

Give them grace, to endure, | 16:49
give them strength to do the best they can | 16:52

Now, when they saw the boldness of Peter and John | 22:19
and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, | 22:24
they marveled, and they took knowledge of them | 22:28
that they had been with Jesus. | 22:32

Come, Holy Spirit, come. | 23:11
In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, we pray. | 23:14
Amen. | 23:19 | |
In the year 250 AD, | 23:24
had you been present in the city of Rome, | 23:27
you would have been amazed at the activity | 23:30
that was prevalent there. | 23:33
On every hand, | 23:35 | |
you would have seen evidence of tremendous prosperity, | 23:36
you would have seen evidence of might, armed might, | 23:40
or as the Roman legions marched up and down the street, | 23:45
you would have been prone to have said, | 23:50
is it possible that the Roman Empire | 23:53
should ever know defeat? | 23:56
And yet, at the very moment, | 24:01
that Rome was at seemingly the height of her power, | 24:04
already, the Empire was crumbling at her extremities. | 24:09
Dr. Elton Trueblood, | 24:16
in commenting upon this fact of history, | 24:19
has observed that Rome | 24:23
and the church present an amazing parallel. | 24:24
That today at a time | 24:30
when it would seem that the church | 24:32
is at the height of her glory that even at this very moment, | 24:34
the church is crumbling at her extremity. | 24:41
Dr. Trueblood indicates several areas | 24:46
in which this is true of the church. | 24:50
First of all, he points out | 24:54
that we are losing so many in the realm of higher education. | 24:58
He makes the observation | 25:05
that less than 2% of the student bodies of our universities | 25:08
and colleges are actively involved | 25:14
and engaged in the work of the Lord Jesus Christ. | 25:19
He then makes the observation | 25:24
that we are losing our young people in general. | 25:27
We have the very old, | 25:33
and we have the very young, | 25:36
but in between, there is a conspicuous void. | 25:39
And the result is not good. | 25:45
He goes on to observe | 25:49
that we are also losing the laboring man. | 25:51
We have the white-collar worker to some degree. | 25:56
But we are losing the blue-collar worker in large measure. | 26:00
I would like to add another area | 26:06
in which there is evident deterioration | 26:09
within the church. | 26:12
I am gravely concerned as a pastor | 26:15
regarding the large number of those | 26:21
who seemingly though they give lip service to the Lord, | 26:25
are actually more concerned about their secular pursuits | 26:30
than they are about their spiritual enrichment. | 26:36
The church today, | 26:43
because of all of these evidences of deterioration | 26:45
that are taking place, is amazingly silent | 26:50
when confronted about the problem of our work. | 26:56
Being weak within, | 27:02
she does not give strong voice concerning the problems | 27:05
that are without. | 27:10
An eminent minister was in a railroad station | 27:13
in the City of London. | 27:17
His train was late. | 27:20
So he went out in the plaza to see | 27:22
what was taking place in the buildings there above. | 27:25
And across the plaza, | 27:29
he saw a magnificent cathedral | 27:30
that had been built in the time of the Battle of Waterloo. | 27:34
He walked toward the cathedral. | 27:38
And as he approached it, | 27:40
he saw a large crowd made up mostly of the young | 27:41
there in front of that magnificent edifice. | 27:46
He came closer and closer for he was intrigued. | 27:51
He looked up at the cathedral first. | 27:56
The windows were darkened, the doors were closed, | 27:58
there was no evidence of life within the church itself. | 28:03
But here, in front of the church, | 28:08
there was a man on a soapbox | 28:10
preaching the various philosophies of Marxism. | 28:14
In and out among the crowd there were teenagers, | 28:19
who were distributing pamphlets | 28:23
telling of the glories of communists. | 28:26
The minister made the observation, | 28:30
"Is not what I see symbolic of what is taking place | 28:33
"in the world today? | 28:37
"At a time when the world is on fire, literally, | 28:39
"at a time when there is war and strife | 28:43
"and division and prejudice. | 28:47
"At a time when it seems | 28:50
"that the world is literally going to pieces, | 28:51
"the church is silent. | 28:56
"The church's voice is muted. | 28:59
"Whereas the voice of communism is strider." | 29:03
Know, my friends, this is too true. | 29:09
At a time when you and I should be speaking with boldness, | 29:13
we are a part of the silent majority within the church. | 29:19
At a time when we should be sharing our witness gladly, | 29:24
somehow, our lips are sealed. | 29:29
There is a missing node in modern Christianity. | 29:34
And I dare say that if I were to ask you | 29:38
what that mission node actually is | 29:41
that I would receive a variety of answers. | 29:44
Some would say, Mr. Lawrence, in my opinion, | 29:48
the missing node is a lack of relevance. | 29:51
And you would be right. | 29:55
That is a missing node. | 29:57
Another might say the missing node | 29:59
is the fact that the church is too much confined | 30:02
within the walls of the church, | 30:06
too much within the stained glass windows. | 30:09
And the church has not scattered | 30:12
and become involved in meeting the crying needs of a sick | 30:15
and suffering world. | 30:20
And you would be right. | 30:22
This is a need in our day. | 30:24
But I would say that right now, | 30:28
the need of the church | 30:31
is for those who call themselves Christians | 30:34
to be bold in their proclamation of the gospel, | 30:39
to be bold in living the Christian life | 30:45
in a secular and a hostile world. | 30:49
We see something of this is a passage of Scripture, | 30:53
which I read a moment ago, | 30:55
Peter and John, who only a short time before, | 30:58
had been cringing before the Sanhedrin | 31:02
were now standing stalwartly | 31:06
and courageously proclaiming the gospel of the risen Lord, | 31:09
even though they had been admonished | 31:14
that they were not to do this. | 31:16
Nevertheless, they did it | 31:18
because they possessed a boldness | 31:19
that they had never possessed before. | 31:22
In the passage we read, | 31:27
when they perceived that Peter and John were unlearned, | 31:29
that is to say, | 31:34 | |
they had not been educated in the school of the Sanhedrin. | 31:35
And that they were ignorant man, | 31:39
that is to say, they were just ordinary laymen, | 31:41
they were not free. | 31:44
When they observed these things about them, they marveled, | 31:46
they marveled at boldness of these men | 31:51
and took knowledge of the fact | 31:55
that they had been with Jesus. | 31:57
Now, what was the secret of the boldness of these men? | 32:00
We find this also in the passage of Scripture, | 32:05
which was read in the eighth verse. | 32:08
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, began to speak. | 32:12
And the Greek word that is translated filled | 32:19
literally means crammed full, | 32:23
filled to the overflowing with the Holy Spirit. | 32:26
His life under the control of the Spirit, | 32:30
his life under the complete domination of the Lord. | 32:33
My dear friend, | 32:38 | |
when any of us permit ourselves | 32:40
to be the resident of the Holy Spirit | 32:44
when any of us permit Him to take over control of our life, | 32:47
then we have a boldness that is otherwise impossible. | 32:52
This boldness was not confined just to Peter, and to John, | 32:59
and to the disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. | 33:04
The Holy Spirit was given to the church. | 33:08
Let me read another passage of Scripture | 33:12
still in the fourth chapter of the book of Acts. | 33:14
The early Christians were probably in the upper room | 33:18
in which Jesus had met with the disciples | 33:20
for that last supper. | 33:22
They were being persecuted. | 33:26
They were being scattered. | 33:28
Now listen to their prayer. | 33:31
And now Lord, behold, they're threatening, | 33:33
and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness, | 33:37
they may speak the Word. | 33:42
And when they had prayed, the place was shaken, | 33:45
where they were assembled together, | 33:49
and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost. | 33:51
And they spoke the Word of God with boldness. | 33:55
Has anybody ever marveled at your bold? | 34:01
Has anybody ever looked at you | 34:06
and seen that there was something different about you? | 34:09
That you were a human being with a (indistinct)? | 34:15
That you were a Christian that really meant business | 34:19
with the Lord? | 34:22 | |
Has anybody ever marveled at your boldness in Christ? | 34:24
And if not, could it be that you lack the Holy Spirit? | 34:30
You lack the empowering that the Holy Spirit | 34:36
will give to any who asks of him? | 34:40
Now in preparing this message, | 34:45
I looked in my (indistinct) for the areas | 34:48
in which the Bible tells us | 34:51
that there is a need for boldness, | 34:53
and I found three distinct areas | 34:56
that I would like to share with you. | 34:59
First of all, | 35:02 | |
the Bible tells us that we need boldness | 35:03
in approaching the throne of God in prayer. | 35:06
In Hebrews, the fourth chapter and the 16th verse, | 35:11
the author writes, | 35:15
"Let us, therefore, come boldly, unto the throne of grace, | 35:16
"that we may obtain mercy, | 35:22
"and find grace to help in time of need." | 35:24
In other words, the author, | 35:30
inspired as he was by the Holy Spirit, | 35:32
is saying that as Christians, | 35:34
we should not be timid in our life of prayer. | 35:37
But we should approach the throne of grace, boldly, | 35:42
boldly, laying hold of those wonderful prayer promises | 35:47
that Jesus Christ gave to His disciples. | 35:51
It disturbs me that Christians are so weak | 35:55
in their life of prayer. | 36:00
As a result, we panic because we do not pray. | 36:02
We bother because our weak faith | 36:08
has not forced us to confront the bother. | 36:12
We run with the crowd | 36:16
because we have not first run to Jesus Christ in prayer. | 36:19
You know, my friend, | 36:25
all of us could know power in the Lord | 36:27
if we really wanted to. | 36:29
Jesus said, concerning the gift of the Spirit, | 36:31
he said, "If you, as earthly fathers, | 36:35
"know how to give good gifts unto your children, | 36:38
"how much more will your heavenly Father | 36:42
"give the Holy Spirit?" | 36:45
And the implication is that this is the best gift. | 36:47
"How much more will He give the Holy Spirit | 36:50
"to them that ask him?" | 36:53
And James said, "You have not because you ask not." | 36:56
Oh, my dear friends, we could be powerful in the Lord. | 37:02
We could be doing things | 37:07
that the world really needs having done. | 37:09
We could have wisdom in regard to the problems | 37:13
that confront us in the world today. | 37:17
If we were but seek that wisdom | 37:20
through prayer in the Holy Spirit. | 37:23
But there is a second area | 37:27
in which the Bible tells us | 37:29
that we are to manifest boldness. | 37:30
It says that we are to manifest boldness | 37:33
in the living of the Christian life. | 37:35
Philippians 1:20, the apostle Paul writes, | 37:39
with all boldness, Christ shall be magnified in my body, | 37:44
both in life and in death. | 37:50
Now, where was Paul at this time? | 37:54
He was in a Roman prison. | 37:57
He was chained to a Roman soldier. | 37:59
In his prayer, | 38:03 | |
he did not ask that he be delivered from prison. | 38:04
He did not ask the chains | 38:08
that bound him to the soldier be broken. | 38:10
He did not ask that he be delivered from a martyr's death. | 38:12
He only asked in his prayer | 38:17
that Christ might be magnified in his body, | 38:19
both in life and in death. | 38:24
In other words, | 38:27 | |
that no matter what his circumstances might be, | 38:29
that he might so glorify Jesus | 38:33
that the world around him | 38:37
might see the living Christ in him. | 38:40
You know, my friends, that's what our world needs today. | 38:44
Our world needs to see Christianity manifested | 38:48
in everyday living. | 38:54
In the words of Edgar Guest in a poem that all of you know, | 38:57
"I'd rather see a sermon than to hear one any day. | 39:01
"I'd rather one would walk with me | 39:05
"than just to show the way. | 39:07
"The best of all, the Christians are the ones | 39:10
"who live their creeds. | 39:13
"To see good put in action is what everybody needs." | 39:16
I saw Christ in a human being a few years ago. | 39:22
As I went through this little country of Paraguay | 39:27
in South America on a preaching mission. | 39:30
The person of whom I'm speaking is a surgeon, | 39:34
a very excellent surgeon, | 39:38
who, if he were in the United States, | 39:40
would be having an income | 39:42
I'm sure in excess of 50 to $75,000 a year. | 39:44
Dawn, who is a dedicated Christian, | 39:50
went first to Paraguay as an emissary of the government | 39:54
to try to help the hospitals in that area. | 39:59
He gives this testimony, | 40:03
"My wife and I hated every moment that we were there. | 40:05
"There was so much poverty, | 40:08
"there was so much dirt and disease." | 40:10
He said, "I could see the distended stomachs | 40:13
"of the naked little boys, | 40:17
"stomachs distended because of a lack of proper diet. | 40:19
"I could see all of this and I wanted to get away from it." | 40:22
He said, "When the end of the two years came, we were glad. | 40:26
"We returned to the United States with rejoicing." | 40:29
But then he said, "Somehow, | 40:33
"I could not forget get those staring eyes, | 40:34
"I could not forget those hands outstretched | 40:38
"for a morsel of food. | 40:43
"I could not forget the disease that I had seen. | 40:45
"And I felt somehow that God wanted me | 40:49
"to do something about it." | 40:51
So he said, "We applied to our foreign mission (indistinct) | 40:54
"we went back to Paraguay." | 40:57
And I know that since he's been there, he has known trouble. | 40:59
His little girl was drowned. | 41:03
Another child fell from a horse, his arm was broken, | 41:05
and his bones became diseased, | 41:09
and the arm had to be amputated. | 41:11
But always, there was a radiance. | 41:14
Always, there was a joy about God. | 41:16
I was privileged to see him operate on one occasion. | 41:20
And after the operation was over, I said, | 41:25
"Dawn, how much would you receive for that operation | 41:27
"were you in the States?" | 41:30
He said, "Oh, I would presume about $500." | 41:31
I said, "How much will you get for it here?" | 41:34
He smiled flimsily. | 41:37
And he said, "John, I'll get only this man's gratitude | 41:39
"and the knowledge that I am doing what God wants me to do, | 41:45
"in the service of humanity, among a needful people." | 41:50
Yes, I saw Christ living in this man. | 41:55
And I've seen Christ living in other men. | 41:59
But the need of this hour | 42:03
is for more of us to live with boldness, the Christian life, | 42:05
and we are not doing it. | 42:11
God help us to repent | 42:13
and to do all that Jesus Christ would have us do | 42:16
in a hostile world such as this. | 42:20
And then finally, | 42:23
we are told in the Scriptures | 42:25
that we need the boldness | 42:27
that will motivate us to fearlessly speak forth the Word. | 42:30
In Ephesians, the sixth chapter, the 19th and 20th verses, | 42:36
the apostle Paul is praying once again. | 42:40
And this is his prayer, | 42:43
"That utterance may be given unto me, | 42:45
"that I may open my mouth boldly, | 42:49
"to make known the mystery of the gospel, | 42:53
"for which I am an ambassador in bonds, | 42:56
"that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak." | 43:00
Here again, though, he's in prison, an ambassador in bonds, | 43:06
he does not pray for deliverance. | 43:11
He does not pray for freedom. | 43:14
He only prays that he might be able | 43:16
and motivated to speak boldly, | 43:20
a witness concerning Jesus Christ. | 43:24
Thou how successful he was in this, | 43:28
how his prayer was answered. | 43:32
While in the not too distant future, | 43:34
after praying this prayer, | 43:36
we are told that there are Christians | 43:38
in the household of Caesar. | 43:41
And I'm sure that they were they are partially | 43:43
because the Apostle Paul had spoken boldly | 43:46
a testimony concerning the Lord Jesus Christ. | 43:50
Oh, dear friends, this also is needed today. | 43:56
How we need to leave our silent pasture. | 44:01
How we need to take the seals from off our lips | 44:08
and share with those around us | 44:13
something of the joy and the peace | 44:16
and the fulfillment that we know in Jesus Christ. | 44:20
Two months ago, | 44:26 | |
I had the privilege of speaking in a church | 44:28
in West Berlin, Germany. | 44:31
It was an English speaking church, | 44:35
made up mostly of servicemen. | 44:37
I lived in the home of a man who originally was born | 44:41
and reared in Lillington, North Carolina. | 44:46
Just a simple man, | 44:50
a man who had been converted only about two years before, | 44:52
but he was literally on fire for the Lord. | 44:58
He was living a different kind of life, | 45:03
a life of goodness and righteousness. | 45:06
And the thing that he wanted to do most of all | 45:10
was to share with his buddies, to share with his neighbors, | 45:14
a word about the joy that he was experiencing | 45:19
in Jesus Christ. | 45:23 | |
And he was effective | 45:25
because he was the instrument | 45:26
by which many were led unto the Lord. | 45:28
My dear people, | 45:33 | |
the commodity that is needed most | 45:35
as I see it in the church today is for the members, | 45:37
for those who call themselves Christians, | 45:42
to first seek the Holy Spirit, | 45:46
the empowering of the Holy Spirit. | 45:49
And this is accomplished by their giving over | 45:52
the control of their lives to Him. | 45:55
And then being filled with the Holy Spirit, | 45:58
the need is to go out and to live with boldness | 46:01
and to proclaim with boldness the unsearchable riches | 46:07
of our Lord and Savior. | 46:13
God grant that you and I may become bold in Him. | 46:15
Let's pray. | 46:22 | |
Our Father and our God, | 46:25
we thank thee for the presence of thy Spirit | 46:28
among us this morning. | 46:30

that many here might let thy Spirit | 46:36
take over control of their life | 46:40
till the end, that in the years ahead, | 46:43
they may live with boldness and speak with boldness | 46:47
of the unsearchable riches of thy truth. | 46:51
