- | The third lesson is from the gospel | 0:15 |
according to Saint Luke, chapter 12 | 0:17
and verses 32 through 40. | 0:20
The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, | 0:24
as it is recorded in the gospel according | 0:27
to Saint Luke, Chapter 12, in verses 32 to 40. | 0:28
Listen now for this portion of God's word. | 0:32
Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's | 0:36
good pleasure to give you the kingdom. | 0:40
Sell your possessions, and give alms. | 0:43
Make purses for yourself that do not wear out. | 0:47
An unfailing treasure in heaven, | 0:50
where no thief comes near, and no moth destroys. | 0:52
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. | 0:57
Be dressed for action, and have your lamps lit. | 1:02
Be like those who are waiting for their master | 1:07
to return from the wedding banquet, | 1:09
so that they may open the door for him | 1:11
as soon as he comes and knocks. | 1:13
Blessed are those slaves whom the master | 1:16
finds alert when he comes. | 1:19
Truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt | 1:21
and have them sit down to eat, | 1:24
and he will come and serve them. | 1:27
If he comes during the middle of the night, | 1:30
or near dawn, and finds them, so blessed are those slaves. | 1:32
But know this, if the owner of the house | 1:38
had known at what hour the thief was coming, | 1:41
he would not have left his house and let it be broken into. | 1:44
You also must be ready. | 1:49
For the son of man is coming at an unexpected hour. | 1:52
This is the word of the Lord. | 2:01
(congregation murmurs)
Let us pray. | 2:06 | |
Come now Holy Spirit, with all of your quickening power. | 2:10
Grant us ears that we might hear spiritual truths, | 2:14
and be empowered to walk into them. | 2:17
Amen. | 2:20 | |
Our gospel lection for today falls hot on the heels | 2:23
of the parable of the rich fool. | 2:28
And Jesus' discussion with the disciples about | 2:31
all the things which consume us. | 2:34
All of those things which seem so important to us. | 2:37
On last Sunday, we were reminded of the foolishness | 2:42
of our own desire, and how we are caught up in an endless | 2:45
cycle of consumption and desires that lead us to a depth | 2:49
of longing that God alone can satisfy. | 2:54
But don't take will too seriously. | 2:59
It was just more of his foolishness. | 3:01
So this morning, in the splendor and majesty of this place, | 3:06
I want for us to reflect on matters | 3:10
that are not quite so weighty, lighthearted matters. | 3:13
Pardon my indelicate curiosity, chalk it up to my age | 3:18
and newness here, you know, too young | 3:22
to know any better, too new to care. | 3:24
But allow me to ask a question. | 3:28
What are you living for? | 3:33
What matters most to you? | 3:36
What do you treasure? | 3:39
I'm living for my family and for their future, says one. | 3:43
I don't know, says another, I just want to be happy. | 3:48
I want some meaning and fulfillment in my life. | 3:51
A third says, life's too short, | 3:55
you've got to go for the gusto. | 3:58
So which will it be? | 4:01
A career or a family? | 4:04
The additional degree, or the marriage? | 4:07
The winter home, or the summer place in the Hamptons? | 4:11
What do you mean which will it be? | 4:16
We want it all! | 4:18 | |
And so with that, the rat race begins, | 4:20
and we run and run, and run, until at last, | 4:23
we fall exhausted, wearied and worn | 4:27
of our own foolishness. | 4:32
We are those who have a love | 4:36
and passion for things intellectual. | 4:37
We plan strategically and create | 4:41
initiatives for waters yet uncharted. | 4:44
We watch for and analyze trends | 4:47
and patterns of things to come, | 4:50
yet fail to comprehend that our very lives | 4:53
are being poured out before us, and lived in the presence, | 4:57
care and eternal keeping of almighty God. | 5:02
Yet we live as if that reality doesn't matter at all. | 5:07
You and I just can't help it, we're good, honest, | 5:14
hard-working people who spend two thirds of our waking | 5:17
hours making a living, but not having a life. | 5:21
Don't we live as though our lives | 5:27
were dependent upon ourselves? | 5:29
We, who love to boast of self-reliance, | 5:31
of pulling ourselves up by our own bootstraps. | 5:34
We who love to lay claim to the Protestant work ethic | 5:38
stand in polar opposition to a gracious God | 5:42
who says to us cast your cares upon me, | 5:47
for I care for thee. | 5:51
It's just the American way, and therefore the Christian | 5:55
way of life to worry about all of that stuff. | 5:58
So again I ask, | 6:04 | |
what are you living for? | 6:06
Are you living for the kingdom of God? | 6:09
Or are you living as if the kingdom doesn't matter at all? | 6:11
If you are wearied by the endless rat race, | 6:18
and you would like to walk away from the endless maze, | 6:21
then hear the good news. | 6:24
We are free to live as a people of the promise. | 6:27
Hear the word of exhortation from the gospel. | 6:30
Fear not, our lives do not rest | 6:34
upon so precarious a foundation. | 6:37
Self-reliance is not a prerequisite for discipleship. | 6:41
You need not worry about your life, | 6:45
what you shall eat or drink or wear. | 6:48
Do not be afraid, little flock. | 6:54
For it is your father's good | 6:57
pleasure to give you the kingdom. | 6:58
Not just the things of the earth, | 7:02
but the full measure of salvation and creation itself. | 7:04
Of course, you know what the trouble | 7:09
is with all of this, don't you? | 7:11
The gospel doesn't sound like good news to us, | 7:13
when we've spent all of our energy and being | 7:17
striving after all that life has to offer, | 7:20
we are confronted with the good news of the gospel. | 7:23
Sell your possessions, and give alms. | 7:27
Make purses for yourself that do not wear out, | 7:31
an unfailing treasure in heaven | 7:34
where no thief comes near, and no moth destroys. | 7:36
For where your treasure is, | 7:42
there your heart will be also. | 7:45
You call that good news? | 7:48
For people who can't get enough, it feels more | 7:51
like an iron fist in a velvet glove. | 7:56
The good news is that not only do we not have | 8:01
to run the rat race, | 8:04
we don't even have to enter the maze. | 8:06
Do not keep striving for what you are to eat, | 8:12
what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. | 8:15
For it is nations of the world that strive | 8:20
after all these things, Luke says earlier in his gospel, | 8:22
for your Father knows that you need them. | 8:26
Strive for his kingdom, and these things | 8:30
will be given to you as well. | 8:33
And since these are not matters that matter, | 8:38
is there something worthy of our lives' | 8:43
devotion and attention? | 8:45
There is this urgent word in the gospel for today. | 8:48
It is a word to a church which has become | 8:52
both custodian and companion of the status quo. | 8:54
It is a word to a church who speaks | 8:59
elegantly of ethics and ethos, | 9:01
but finds itself embarrassingly esoteric | 9:04
when engaging in things essential and eternal. | 9:07
Luke's word is prepare. | 9:12
Prepare. | 9:17 | |
Be vigilant, keep watch, for the Son of Man | 9:19
is coming at an unexpected hour. | 9:22
This is a matter that matters. | 9:25
This word first reminds us that we are to be prepared. | 9:29
What kind of preparation do we demonstrate | 9:34
on a spiritual plain for the coming of the Son of Man? | 9:36
The nation of Israel's entire history | 9:41
was for the purpose of being ready for the Messiah's | 9:43
initiating of the kingdom of God. | 9:46
Yet the people of Israel failed to recognize him. | 9:49
They were not prepared. | 9:53
Abraham in the epistle lesson is exalted | 9:56
as a model of faith, for he set out confidently in faith, | 9:58
not knowing where he was going, | 10:02
but certain that his journey of faith | 10:05
would lead him to a heavenly country. | 10:07
Abraham understood that which mattered most | 10:10
was not care for the human needs, | 10:13
but rather matters of the human heart. | 10:16
He was prepared and responded when the call of God came. | 10:20
What is this business about being dressed for action, | 10:26
of having your lamps lit, of being like those | 10:30
who are waiting for their master to return | 10:33
from the wedding banquet so that they may open | 10:35
the door for him as soon as he comes and knock all about? | 10:37
It is about being prepared. | 10:42
In the Palestinian culture of Jesus' day, | 10:46
the role of the bridesmaid was simply to be ready | 10:49
for the coming of the bridegroom. | 10:52
Whenever he arrived, the bridesmaid would quickly move | 10:54
into the procession to escort the bride | 10:57
and groom to the wedding festivities. | 10:59
These festivities might last an entire week. | 11:02
There would be feasting and dancing and singing. | 11:06
It was the highlight of the social life in Palestine. | 11:10
No one wanted to miss it. | 11:14
There was no specific time at which | 11:16
the bridegroom would come. | 11:18
The bridesmaid simply had to prepare | 11:20
for his coming at any moment. | 11:22
Notice the irony in the text. | 11:25
For their faithfulness in preparing themselves, | 11:29
the entire order of the day gets turned inside out. | 11:31
At the return of the master, it is the slave | 11:36
who is exalted to the position of host. | 11:39
Who is served by the master. | 11:42
This is good news to those of lowly estate. | 11:45
Those who are invisible in our society, | 11:49
to incoming first year students even, | 11:51
you have a place of honor at the table. | 11:55
In the words of our choir, children, don't get weary | 11:59
till your work is done, Christian journey soon be over. | 12:04
The time is drawing nigh. | 12:09
One of my most vivid memories of my experience | 12:14
as a Boy Scout was when our Troop 119 | 12:17
went on a camping trip to Camp Barstow. | 12:20
We were nearing the time for the Boy Scout Jamboree, | 12:23
and our troop wanted to have some | 12:26
unique display for the event. | 12:28
A number of the scouts in the troop decided | 12:31
we should do a wildlife exhibit. | 12:32
We wanted to be able to describe | 12:35
how certain animals lived in the wild, | 12:36
what their habits were, and what they ate. | 12:39
It was our plan to capture a few creatures from the woods | 12:42
and display them at the Jamboree, and later turn them loose. | 12:45
And while on the camping trip, we hunted for wildlife. | 12:50
We were successful in finding a turtle and a lizard, | 12:53
a chipmunk, but I wanted to find a snake. | 12:56
Now when you're a Boy Scout, there's something | 13:01
kind of exciting about snakes. | 13:02
There's the danger of them, and they cause mothers | 13:04
and sisters to shiver in delight. | 13:07
Boys like that, you know. | 13:10
Our troop scoured the woods for a couple of hours. | 13:14
Then all of a sudden, several of us saw one | 13:16
slithering across some rocks in our path. | 13:19
This was my big opportunity. | 13:22
I had seen on television how one could grab a snake | 13:25
behind its head and hold it securely | 13:28
in one's hand and be in no danger. | 13:31
I was prepared to go into action, or so I thought. | 13:36
We recognized that this was a black snake, | 13:40
and I sneaked up behind him, ready to put into practice | 13:42
the techniques that I had learned on television. | 13:46
I grabbed him near his head. | 13:49
I thought he was mine. | 13:51
However, this clever little rascal | 13:55
slithered through my grip, | 13:57
turned its head, and bit me on the back of my hand. | 13:58
This was not the way it was supposed to happen. | 14:02
The man on television hadn't gotten bitten. | 14:06
In my fear and surprise, I threw the snake down. | 14:10
Actually, I think I cursed him too. | 14:14
God may have cursed him first, | 14:16
but I think I cursed him best. | 14:18
(audience laughs) | ||
Not surprisingly, he got away, and we had | 14:23
no black snake at the Jamboree that year. | 14:26
Now I was not hurt from the snake bite. | 14:29
Although my pride was bruised. | 14:31
You see, the motto of a Boy Scout is be prepared. | 14:33
The truth is, I was not prepared. | 14:38
I should have used a snare to hold the snake, | 14:42
and brought along a bag to put him in. | 14:44
I had not made adequate preparation, | 14:46
and so I lost my big opportunity, | 14:49
and was a failure at my first and last occasion | 14:51
to be a member of the snake-handling church. | 14:54
(audience laughs) | 14:57
A Boy Scout is prepared. | 15:02
He is prepared by acquiring knowledge from the experiences | 15:05
of woods that will prepare him to handle | 15:09
a particular situation when it really counted. | 15:11
So too it must be for us. | 15:15
A Christian's duty is to live one's entire life | 15:18
prepared to give an accounting to Christ. | 15:21
It is both doing and being. | 15:24
Finally, Luke's gospel also speaks | 15:29
to us about remaining expectant. | 15:31
Are you expectant that the Son of Man will come? | 15:35
Is preparing for the coming of the Son of Man | 15:38
a way of life for you, or are you living | 15:41
as if today were the first day in the kingdom? | 15:44
Ask any child in Duke Chapel this morning | 15:49
about when his or her birthday is coming. | 15:51
A child who knows his birthday | 15:54
is near is exceedingly expectant. | 15:56
There is the assurance that soon his | 15:59
or her special day will arrive. | 16:01
There will be gifts and celebration, cake and ice cream. | 16:03
The prisoner of war who remains confident | 16:08
that his country is making every effort | 16:10
to secure his release is expectant. | 16:12
Anticipating his ultimate freedom, | 16:16
certain that that day will come. | 16:18
Even though we are not sure of the hour | 16:22
of the coming of the Son of Man, | 16:25
rest assured the hour will come. | 16:27
Perhaps Jesus is saying to us through this word | 16:30
that God's kingdom is sure. | 16:33
No one knows the day or the hour | 16:36
of the fulfillment of the kingdom, | 16:38
but just as surely as day follows night, | 16:40
the kingdom will come. | 16:44
Therefore, we should live with that kind of expectancy, | 16:47
confident that the will of God will ultimately prevail. | 16:50
Do we watch as diligently for the unexpected hour | 16:55
of the coming of the Son of Man as we do the rise | 16:59
and fall of Wall Street's market? | 17:02
Do we hang on every word of the kingdom's founder | 17:05
as we do on the words of Alan Greenspan? | 17:08
You and I resolve to be alert to God's presence. | 17:13
And then sleep through the challenges set before us. | 17:18
One day, a boy was watching a holy man praying | 17:24
on the banks of the river in India. | 17:27
When the holy man completed his prayer, | 17:29
the boy went over and asked him, | 17:32
will you teach me to pray? | 17:36
The holy man studied the boy's face carefully. | 17:38
Then he gripped the boy's head in his hands, | 17:42
and plunged it forcefully into the water. | 17:44
The boy struggled frantically, | 17:48
trying to free himself in order to breathe. | 17:50
Finally, the holy man released his hold, | 17:54
and when the boy was able to get his breath, | 17:56
he gasped, "What did you do that for?" | 17:58
The holy man said, "I just gave you your first lesson." | 18:03
"What do you mean," asked the astonished boy. | 18:10
"Well," said the holy man, "When you long to pray | 18:13
"As much as you longed to breathe | 18:18
"When your head was underwater, | 18:20
"Only then will I be able to teach you how to pray." | 18:23
Do we long for the coming of the Son of Man | 18:30
with that sort of passion? | 18:33
Or do we wistfully reflect upon its arrival | 18:36
with a sort of seasoned indifference? | 18:38
A colleague in ministry says that if you really want to know | 18:43
how to prepare for the coming of the Son of Man, | 18:46
take a lesson from a dog. | 18:49
Any good dog listens expectantly for his master's return. | 18:52
And when in his presence, | 18:57
leaps into his arms with reckless abandon. | 19:00
Sons and daughters of God, | 19:06
our task is to live for the matters which truly matter. | 19:09
God help us do no less. | 19:16
Amen. | 19:21 | |
(liturgical organ music) | 19:28
(choral music) | 20:15 | |
- | You may be seated. | 22:51 |
The Lord be with you. | 23:02
- | And also with you. | |
- | Let us pray. | 23:05 |
God of wisdom and righteousness, | 23:10
we gather in your presence aware of the vastness | 23:14
of your world and of the intimacy of your concern for us. | 23:17
Your love encompasses our largest dreams | 23:22
and our smallest fears. | 23:25
You have sent us forth with a message to proclaim. | 23:28
Give us the courage and the compassion | 23:33
to reach out to our sisters and brothers around the world | 23:36
in love that the gospel might be revealed not only | 23:39
through our words, but through our lives. | 23:43
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. | 23:47
Let us pray for all who live in the midst | 23:52
of terror or violence, where innocent lives | 23:54
are sacrificed for political gain. | 23:57
We pray for places where power is abused, | 24:01
and the dispossessed bear the heaviest burdens, | 24:03
where extremes of wealth and poverty are bitterly divisive, | 24:06
where even religion produces enmity | 24:10
rather than reconciliation. | 24:12
Especially we pray for those victims of the recent | 24:15
bombings in Kenya and Tanzania. | 24:18
We thank you for their lives, and ask that in the wake | 24:21
of such unspeakable tragedy, you would grant us a renewed | 24:24
determination to nurture a spirit | 24:28
of forbearance and respect, rather than hatred and distrust | 24:31
among the peoples of the earth. | 24:36
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. | 24:38
Let us pray for the leaders of the nations, | 24:44
and those whose words and actions | 24:46
will influence events in our world. | 24:48
That they may not tolerate injustice, | 24:51
seek refuge in violence, or make ill-considered decisions | 24:53
about the futures of other people. | 24:57
Grant them the wisdom and the strength | 24:59
to become genuine peacemakers. | 25:01
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. | 25:04
Let us pray for all who cry out for healing, | 25:09
that you will give patience, courage and faith | 25:13
to all who are disabled by injury or sickness. | 25:17
That you will comfort those who endure continual pain, | 25:21
pouring upon them the healing balm of your Holy Spirit. | 25:25
That you will grant fearless trust in you to all | 25:29
who are stricken with chronic or terminal illness. | 25:32
Console those who are bereaved | 25:35
after the loss of a loved one. | 25:37
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. | 25:40
Let us pray for all whose increasing years | 25:45
bring them weakness, distress or isolation. | 25:47
Provide for them homes of dignity and peace, | 25:51
give them understanding helpers, | 25:54
and the willingness to accept help. | 25:56
Draw their families closer to them, | 25:59
and deliver faithful friends to their side. | 26:01
And as their strength diminishes, | 26:04
increase their faith and trust in you. | 26:06
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. | 26:09
Let us pray for the children of the world, | 26:13
and for their parents, teachers and caretakers. | 26:16
Protect those who have been traumatized. | 26:20
Reassure those who are alone or afraid. | 26:23
Provide for those who are hungry or homeless. | 26:27
Restore to fullness of life those | 26:30
who are fragile or vulnerable in any way. | 26:32
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. | 26:36
Let us pray for the ministry of Kenneth Nelson. | 26:41
We offer thanks for the many gifts | 26:44
you have bestowed upon him, | 26:46
and his commitment to serve the church. | 26:48
And pray that you will continue to pour out your grace | 26:51
upon him and all whom he ministers to. | 26:53
Lord, in your mercy. | 26:57
