Father Jean-Bertrand Aristide discusses children living on the streets, and the causes and effects of the phenomenon. If these children do not receive a proper upbringing and education, they will grow up to be a new generation of Macoutes. He discusses the mentality of "rete avèk moun" that causes people to kowtow before more powerful people, including foreign powers. Aristide says that the state does not want to help street children; they use children to get money from foreigners, but they do not use the money to help children. Teachers often encounter resistance from families, who don't agree with the education the children are receiving. He sees hope in young people who are capable of independent thinking despite these obstacles.
