Behold, I stand at the door and knock. | 3:46
If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, | 3:50
I will come into him and eat with him, and he with me. | 3:53
I am the living bread, which came down from heaven. | 3:59
If anyone eats of this bread, he shall live forever. | 4:03
And the bread which I shall give | 4:07
for the life of the world is my flesh. | 4:10
The cup of blessing, which we bless, | 4:16
is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? | 4:19
The bread which we break, | 4:24
is it not a participation in the body of Christ? | 4:26
Because there is one loaf. | 4:30
We who are many, are one body. | 4:32
Or we all partake of the same loaf. | 4:36
Beloved, let us love one another for love is of God. | 4:40
And he who loves is born of God and knows God. | 4:45
In this, the love of God was made manifest among us. | 4:50
That God sent his only son | 4:55
into the world so that we might live through him. | 4:57
Christ, our Paschal lamb is offered up for us, | 5:04
wants for all. | 5:07 | |
When he bore our sins on his body upon the cross. | 5:09
For he is the very Lam of God that taketh away | 5:13
the sins of the world. | 5:16
Wherefore, let us keep a joyful | 5:19
and holy feast with the Lord. | 5:21
What no eye has seen or ear heard, | 5:26
nor the heart of man conceive, | 5:30
what God has prepared for those who loved him. | 5:33
God has revealed to us through the spirit, | 5:37
for the spirit searches even the depths of the heart. | 5:41
The Lord be with you. | 5:47
(congregation responds faintly) | 5:50
Let us pray the prayer for purity. | 5:51
Almighty God, under whom all hearts are open, | 5:55
all desires known, | 5:59
and from whom no secrets are hid, | 6:01
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration | 6:04
of Thy Holy Spirit, | 6:07
that we may perfectly love Thee | 6:09
and worthily magnify Thy holy name, | 6:11
through Christ, our Lord, amen. | 6:14
Now let us stand to say together, the Gloria in Excelsis | 6:18
Glory be to God on high, | 6:27
and on earth, peace, goodwill toward men. | 6:30
We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee, | 6:34
we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, | 6:38
for Thy great glory. | 6:41
Oh Lord God, Heavenly King, | 6:43
God the Father almighty. | 6:46
Oh Lord, the only begotten son, Jesus Christ, | 6:48
Oh Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, | 6:52
that taketh away the sins of the world, | 6:57
have mercy upon us. | 7:00
Thou that taketh away the sins of the world. | 7:02
receive our prayer. | 7:05
Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, | 7:07
have mercy upon us, | 7:10
For Thou only art holy, | 7:12
Thou only art the Lord, | 7:14
Thou only oh, Christ with the Holy Ghost, | 7:17
art most high in the glory of God The Father. | 7:20
Amen. | 7:24 | |
Remain standing to hear the invitation. | 7:26
Ye that do truly and earnestly repent of your sins | 7:29
or in love and charity with your neighbors, | 7:33
and intend to lead a new life, | 7:36
following the commandments of God | 7:39
in walking from henceforth, in his holy ways, | 7:41
drawn here with faith and take this holy sacrament | 7:44
to your comfort and make your humble confession | 7:47
to Almighty God. | 7:51 | |
let us be seated to pray together the general confession. | 7:53
Let us pray. | 8:00 | |
Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, | 8:02
maker of all things, judge of all men, | 8:06
we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins | 8:10
and wickedness, | 8:13 | |
which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, | 8:14
by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine majesty. | 8:18
We do earnestly repent, | 8:22
and are heartily sorry for these, our misdoings. | 8:24
The remembrance of them is grievous unto us. | 8:28
Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, | 8:31
most merciful Father, | 8:34
for Thy son, our Lord Jesus Christ sake, | 8:36
forgive us all that is passed, | 8:39
and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please Thee, | 8:42
in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy name | 8:45
through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 8:50
Amen. | 8:52 | |
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, | 8:56
who with thy great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins | 8:59
to all then that with hearty repentance and true faith, | 9:03
turn to Thee. | 9:06 | |
Have mercy upon us. | 9:08
Pardon and deliver us from all our sins. | 9:11
Confirm, strengthen us in all goodness, | 9:14
and bring us to everlasting life, | 9:18
through Jesus Christ, our Lord. | 9:21
Hear what comfortable words the scriptures say | 9:26
to all that truly turn to the Lord. | 9:29
God so loved the world that gave gave His only son | 9:34
And whosoever believe in him should not perish | 9:38
but have eternal life. | 9:41
The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, | 9:44
that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. | 9:48
If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the father. | 9:56
Jesus Christ, the righteous. | 9:59
And he is the expiation for our sins. | 10:02
And not for ours only, but for also, | 10:05
for the sins of the whole world. | 10:08
Let us pray for the whole state of Christ's church. | 10:15
Most merciful father, we humbly beseech Thee | 10:20
to receive these, our prayers for the universal church. | 10:23
That Thy will confirm it in the truth of Thy holy faith, | 10:27
inspire it with unity and concord, | 10:31
and extend and prosper it throughout the world. | 10:35
We beseech thee also, so to guide and strengthen | 10:39
the witness of the church to those in authority | 10:42
in all nations, | 10:44 | |
that they may maintain the justice and welfare | 10:46
of all mankind. | 10:49 | |
Give grace, oh heavenly Father, | 10:54
to all ministers of Thy church, | 10:56
that both by their life and doctrine, | 10:59
they may set forth Thy true and lively word, | 11:01
and faithfully administer Thy holy sacraments. | 11:04
And to all Thy people, | 11:08
give Thy Heavenly grace, that with willing heart, | 11:10
and due reverence, | 11:13
they may hear and receive Thy holy word. | 11:14
truly serving Thee in holiness and righteousness | 11:18
all the days of their lives. | 11:22
And we most humbly beseech thee of Thy goodness, | 11:27
Oh Lord, who support and strengthen all those who, | 11:30
in this transitory life are in trouble, sorrow, | 11:33
need, sickness, or any other adversity. | 11:38
We remember with thanksgiving, those who have loved | 11:46
and served Thee and Thy church on Earth, | 11:48
and now rest from their labors. | 11:51
Especially those most dear to us, | 11:55
whom we name in our parts before Thee. | 11:57
Keep us in fellowship with all Thy saints, | 12:07
and bring us at length to the joy of Thy heavenly kingdom. | 12:10
Amen. | 12:22 | |
- | The lesson from holy scriptures for this day | 12:38 |
is taken from the 13th chapter, | 12:40
of the Gospel according to St. John. | 12:43
let us hear the word of God. | 12:46
It was before the Passover festival, | 12:50
Jesus knew that his hour had come, | 12:53
and he must leave this world and go to the Father. | 12:56
He had always loved his own who were in the world. | 12:59
And now he was to show the full extent of his love. | 13:03
The devil had already put it into the mind of Judas, | 13:07
son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. | 13:10
During supper, Jesus, well aware that the Father | 13:14
had entrusted everything to him, | 13:18
and that he had come from God, and was going back to God, | 13:20
rose from the table, laid aside his garments | 13:24
and taking a towel, tied it round about him. | 13:29
Then he poured water into a basin, | 13:33
and began to wash his disciples' feet | 13:36
and wipe them with the towel. | 13:39
After washing their feet and taking his garments again, | 13:42
he sat down and he said to them, | 13:47
"I give you a new commandment. | 13:52
Love one another as I have loved you, | 13:56
so you are to love one another. | 14:00
If there is this love among you, | 14:03
then all will know but you are my disciples." | 14:06
Herein is the reading of the lesson for this day. | 14:11
- | The peace of God be with you all. | 14:27 |
Here we are, a gathered congregation, | 14:34
at the Lord's supper, | 14:39
the Eucharist, | 14:42 | |
the sacrament of holy communion, | 14:45
by whatever name it is best known to you, | 14:48
and best loved by you. | 14:52
Therefore let us reflect on this uncommon, | 14:57
common meal, | 15:02 | |
on what it may mean to each one of us | 15:05
on this worldwide communion Sunday. | 15:07
And let us do so by looking at a word | 15:13
which signifies our literal and inevitable relationship | 15:16
to one another at this service. | 15:21
The word is, | 15:25 | |
"Companion." | 15:27 | |
"Companion," is derived from two Latin words, | 15:30
"Com," or "Cum," | 15:35 | |
meaning together, | 15:38
and "Panis," | 15:41 | |
which may be translated bread in general, | 15:43
or a loaf in particular. | 15:48
A companion is one who breaks bread, | 15:51
with another. | 15:56 | |
Companions are by derivation, | 15:58
folk who have eaten bread together, | 16:02
with the derived effect that they are therefore, | 16:06
united, one to another. | 16:10
Now this attitude was particularly true in the near east, | 16:13
the home of the Lord's supper. | 16:18
It was a custom with the force of an unwritten law | 16:21
that a householder must open his door | 16:28
to any traveler who desired food and shelter. | 16:33
But something was added, a new dimension. | 16:39
The act of eating together was concluded | 16:44
with a vow of undying friendship. | 16:49
The meal in common was almost a religious act. | 16:53
To do a man evil, | 16:59 | |
after breaking bread with him, | 17:02
was considered treachery of the highest order. | 17:05
Now this linking of eating and friendship | 17:11
spread to other lands, other cultures, | 17:14
some of you have visited Glencoe, | 17:18
that gash, | 17:22 | |
like a sword cut among the loftiest | 17:25
and wildest of the highland hills in Scotland. | 17:28
More of you have heard about the massacre of Glencoe, | 17:33
that bloody act, | 17:38 | |
of February 13th, 1692. | 17:42
Probably nothing in the history of Highland barbarism, | 17:46
and there was plenty of it in Scotland, | 17:52
was more inhuman than that massacre. | 17:54
Why? | 17:59 | |
Because the 120 soldiers, | 18:01
all Campbells, | 18:05 | |
who slew the 30 MacDonalds that grim night, | 18:08
had been guests of the Clan MacDonald, | 18:14
for 12 nights before the butchering. | 18:18
They had supped MacDonald oatmeal, | 18:23
dined on their venison, and drunk their whiskey. | 18:26
They had eaten their salt, | 18:32
and to this day it is still too much | 18:35
for some MacDonalds even to be civil to a Campbell. | 18:39
Now we, who spend so much of our eating time in cafeterias | 18:45
and at snack bars, or beside automatic food vendors, | 18:51
are not always aware of the cultural | 18:57
and fraternal importance of the table. | 18:59
Here is one instance of a profession within a society, | 19:04
which is conscious of the civilizing centrality | 19:08
of the table. | 19:12 | |
The Inns of Court, four in number, | 19:15
are a kind of legal university in London, | 19:19
made up of four colleges. | 19:23
Gray's, | 19:26 | |
Lincoln, | 19:27 | |
Middle Temple, | 19:29 | |
and Inner Temple. | 19:30
They have the exclusive right | 19:32
of calling a person to the bar, | 19:34
thus enabling him to practice in the higher courts. | 19:38
Now to become a member of the English bar, | 19:42
it is necessary, | 19:45 | |
beside passing a few examinations in law, | 19:46
to be admitted as a member of one of these inns. | 19:51
And to keep 12 terms, extending over period of three years. | 19:56
Now, how does one keep 12 terms? | 20:01
It's not by residence, | 20:06
it's not by attendance and classes, | 20:10
but by eating six dinners, | 20:14
each term in the halls. | 20:18
The members of the bar were and are companions of the table, | 20:23
bound to one another through the symbolic instrumentality | 20:29
of the common meal. | 20:35
Now does this say anything to us who are gathered here? | 20:37
When we leave the chapel around noon, | 20:43
we shall have been Jesus' guests at his table, | 20:46
and fellow guests, one of another. | 20:51
When we all must think of the chapel as a dining room, | 20:55
even as a pantry, because pantries derived from "Panis." | 21:00
We are companions of the table of the Lord. | 21:06
And our Lord has told us how to behave toward one another. | 21:11
Because of that, according to the fourth gospel, | 21:16
he spoke these words to his group of intimate disciples | 21:20
at the Last Supper, | 21:24
"I give you a new commandment. | 21:26
Loved one another, | 21:30
as I have loved you, | 21:32
so you are to love one another. | 21:34
If there is love among you. | 21:38
then all will know that you are my disciples." | 21:41
He still says these words, | 21:48
to us, | 21:50 | |
at his table, | 21:52 | |
as his guests, | 21:55 | |
bound to one another because we are all his disciples. | 21:57
And are expected to act toward one another in goodwill. | 22:04
Jesus said that thus, we would be recognized | 22:10
as his disciples. | 22:14
He could just as validly have called us his companions. | 22:16
And to be a companion of Jesus, | 22:22
is to be a companion of honor. | 22:24
It's also to be a companion of other companions. | 22:29
When we have eaten the earthly bread of heaven together | 22:34
we should be good companions. | 22:39
Boswell in his journal of a tour to the Hebrides, | 22:45
August 15th, 1733, | 22:50
tells of introducing a friend to Dr. Samuel Johnson. | 22:54
He describes his friend as, | 22:59
"A man, | 23:01 | |
of whom to my much good cannot be said. | 23:03
Who is at once, | 23:09 | |
a good companion and a good Christian, | 23:12
which I think is saying enough." | 23:17
Let me reverse two words from that quotation, | 23:22
and add one other word, | 23:27
"At once, a good Christian, | 23:29
and therefore, | 23:33 | |
a good companion, | 23:36
which I think Is saying enough." | 23:40
Let us pray. | 23:47 | |
For the table of thy son furnished for us. | 23:51
Glory Be to Thee, oh God, | 23:55
for our communion with Him, | 23:58

Let us be seated for our prayer. | 37:26
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of Thy tender mercy, | 37:36
didst give Thine only son, Jesus Christ. | 37:40
He suffered death upon the cross for our redemption. | 37:43
Who made there by the one offering of Himself, | 37:47
a full perfect and sufficient sacrifice | 37:50
for the sins of the whole world, | 37:53
And did institute, and in His holy gospel command us | 37:56
to continue a perpetual memory of His precious death | 38:00
until His coming again. | 38:04
Hear us, oh merciful Father, | 38:08
we most humbly beseech thee, | 38:10
and grant that we, receiving these, Thy creatures | 38:12
of bread and wine, according to Thy son, | 38:15
our savior of Jesus Christ's holy institution. | 38:18
In remembrance of his passion, death and resurrection, | 38:22
may be partakers of the divine nature, through him. | 38:27
Who in the night that he was betrayed, took bread. | 38:33
And when he had given thanks, | 38:36
he broke it and gave it to his disciples saying, | 38:38
"Take, | 38:41 | |
eat. | 38:43 | |
This is my body, | 38:44 | |
which is given for you. | 38:47
Do this in remembrance of me." | 38:50
Likewise, after supper he took the cup, | 38:56
and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them saying, | 38:59
"Drink ye all of this. | 39:02
For this is my blood of the new covenant, | 39:05
which is shed for you, and for many. | 39:09
For the forgiveness of sins. | 39:12
Do this as oft as you shall drink it, | 39:15
in remembrance of me." | 39:19
Amen. | 39:21 | |
Let us all together with heart and voice, | 39:24
pray the prayer of humble access. | 39:26
We do not presume to come to this Thy table, | 39:30
oh, merciful Lord. | 39:33
Trusting in our own righteousness, | 39:35
but in Thy manifold and great mercies. | 39:37
We are not so much as to gather up the crumbs | 39:40
under Thy table. | 39:43 | |
But thou art the same Lord whose property | 39:45
is always to have mercy. | 39:48
Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, | 39:50
so to partake of this sacrament of Thy son, Jesus Christ, | 39:53
that we may walk in newness of life, | 39:57
may grow into his likeness, and may evermore dwell in him, | 40:00
