Jean Dominique, Jonathan Demme, ak Edwidge Danticat pale istwa sinema ayisyen, ki gen ladan li tou fim etranje fè sou Ayiti epi an Ayiti. Yo pale sitou sou adapsyon woman Jacques Roumain « Gouverneurs de la rosée » Maurice Failevic te fè, epi Dominique eksplike “gen odè kreyòl nan fransè” Roumain te ekri a. Li dekri pwòp adaptasyon woman nan, an kreyòl, pou radyo. Yo pale tou sou fim Luis Buñuel yo, sitou SUBIDA AL CIELO, epi sou resanblans ant Dia de los Muertos nan Amerik Latin ak Fèt Gede nan peyi d Ayiti. Yo pale sou travay Rassoul Labuchin, sitou sou « Twa Kolye Maldyòk » li (sou Jacques Stéphen Alexis) epi sou fim li, « Anita » . Dominique gen mepri pou fim « The Comedians » . Dominique bay yon lòt anekdòt sou lane 1976, lè yon ti granmoun, yon dam, te di Dominique li wè l nan rèv. Nan rèv sa a, li te malad, li t ap kouche sou kabann li, epi Dominique, “pitit li,” te vin ride l. Nan rèv sa a, li wè yon pakèt balon ki gen senbòl tout nanchon sou yo. Li eksplike lè yo mete “dyab la” (Duvalier) sou pouvwa sa fè ventan, tout lwa afriken yo te tounen an Afrik, men byento yo pral tounen pou ede nou mete dyab yo deyò.
Jean Dominique, Jonathan Demme, and Edwidge Danticat discuss the history of Haitian cinema, and also films made by foreigners in and about Haiti. They discuss in particular Maurice Failevic's adaptation of Jacques Roumain's GOUVERNEURS DE LA ROSÉE, and Dominique describes how "you have the smell of Haiti in the French" of Roumain's original novel. He describes his own Creole-language adaptation of GOUVERNEURS DE LA ROSÉE for radio. They also discuss the films of Luis Buñuel, particularly SUBIDA AL CIELO, and the similarities between Haitian Fèt Gede and Latin American Day of the Dead. They also discuss SI M PA RELE with Martha Jean-Claude. They examine the work of Rassoul Labuchin, particularly his "Twa Kolye Maldyòk" (about Jacques Stéphen Alexis) and his film ANITA. According to Dominique, ANITA is remarkable because it shows the interior life and "dream world" of a poor Haitian girl. He describes Jessie Alphonse (who played Anaïs in GOUVERNEURS DE LA ROSÉE) and Magalie Marcelin (who played Anita) as two of Haiti's greatest actresses. Dominique expresses disdain for the film THE COMEDIANS. Dominique then tells a story from 1976, when an old woman said she dreamt that she was sick in bed and Dominique, her “son,” had come to help her. She went on to explain that when they put the devil (Duvalier) in power twenty years ago, all the African gods went back to Africa, but soon they will come back, and they will help us get rid of the devils. Dominique, Demme, and Danticat also discuss Raphaël Stines' MAP PALE NÈT, Bob Lemoine's OLIVIA, and other films. According to Dominique, the history of Haitian cinema should also be the history of the Western world in Haiti, and Haiti's reaction to it. He declares that the history of Haitian cinema begins with Haitian painting, and says that someday there should be films about Charlemagne Péralte or Henry Christophe, the latter of whom Dominique considers a Shakespearean tragic character. These sessions were filmed at Ramapo College in New Jersey.
Cette séance a eu lieu à Ramapo College, New Jersey.
