The army has forbidden another event commemorating the Marchaterre massacre, even though the organizers already have permission from the municipal government. (00:02:25-00:30:26)Journalist Ronald Colbert talks with Jean-Robert Sabalat, who was the director of the Bureau Electoral Départemental (BED) de l’Ouest on November 29, 1987 when the army violently destroyed the democratic elections. Sabalat describes the personal reprisals against him (including having his passport seized), and the people responsible for the violence (Namphy, Régala, and others). Colbert then speaks to journalist Jean-Laurent Nelson, who was covering events in Gonaïves and throughout the Artibonite on November 29, 1987. He describes the repression of and violence against peasants and independent journalists by “san manman” (threatening aggressors of unclear origins). It is unclear who was really behind these attacks, but the army is suspected.
