God of our fathers, known of old, | 4:11
we offer unto thee the adoration of our hearts | 4:15
and the love of our whole being. | 4:19
We praise thee, we bless thee, we glorify thee, | 4:22
we give thanks to thee for thy great glory. | 4:28
Praise be to thee for the gift of thy son, Jesus Christ, | 4:32
the risen Redeemer. | 4:36
For the loveliness of his childhood we bless thee, | 4:39
for the beauty of his home we adore thee, | 4:44
for the integrity of his youth we give thee glory, | 4:48
for the greatness of his teaching, the grandeur of his life, | 4:53
the courage of his cross, | 4:58
for his glorious victory over death | 5:01
and his undying influence, we do give thee adoration. | 5:05
Oh God who art rich in mercy toward all | 5:13
who having missed the way, | 5:18
still turn and once more seek thy face, | 5:21
we bow in contrite prayer to confess our guilt. | 5:26
We are guilty because we failed to do the right | 5:31
as well as we knew to do it | 5:34
and because we failed to avoid evil | 5:36
as well as we knew how to avoid it. | 5:39
In thy presence our Father, our customary disguises | 5:43
and our comfortable pretenses do not avail. | 5:47
And under the searching light of thy holiness | 5:52
we know ourselves for what we are, | 5:54
imperfect and wayward creatures | 5:57
who often seek their own wills | 6:00
in spite of our noble aspirations and our high resolutions. | 6:03
We confess that the sin of the disbelieving world | 6:09
is often very much our own sin, | 6:12
and that at the greed which shocks us | 6:16
when we see it in others, hides in our own hearts. | 6:18
None of us loves justice and mercy enough. | 6:23
May we receive the grace of humility here in thy presence, | 6:28
so that we may cease to defeat thy will for the world | 6:34
by our selfish wills. | 6:38
In all of these ways we have acknowledged | 6:43
and in many other ways we have failed | 6:47
to witness to the power of Christ's resurrection | 6:49
and to His redeeming grace. | 6:52
So we pray that the vision of what we honestly might be | 6:55
would convict us of what we are, | 7:00
so that thy mercy may redeem us of our sin | 7:02
through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 7:06
Almighty Father, we offer our prayers | 7:10
for the institutions which support and bless thy children, | 7:14
which bear witness to Easter and to the living Christ. | 7:19
For all those institutions | 7:27
without which this would be a sorry world, | 7:29
we intercede for the church, for the university | 7:33
the school, the state, the nation. | 7:37
We pray for the United Nations. | 7:41
Grant unto thy people such a devotion to law and to order | 7:45
that all these institutions shall be strengthened. | 7:51
Give thy people the good judgment | 7:55
to support every worthwhile institution, | 7:57
to strengthen the good in them | 8:00
and to root out the bad in them, that peace will be realized | 8:02
and lasting progress made possible. | 8:07
This morning, oh God, we especially pray | 8:12
for the victims of strife and warfare, | 8:14
in those areas of the world where order has broken down | 8:17
and where violence has taken command. | 8:20
May peace speedily come and with it | 8:24
may justice be discerned and followed. | 8:28
We pray for President Johnson, that he may be shown a way | 8:32
to bring peace to our world, brotherhood to our own nation. | 8:37
We pray for our loved ones who are at home, | 8:44
for those who are far away | 8:47
and particularly for those who are in Vietnam. | 8:50
Oh Lord, we pray for those who have been crippled | 8:55
or scarred by some unexpected tragedy in their lives, | 8:57
who now find themselves facing a future | 9:02
with problems which are new and frightening, strange. | 9:04
Sustain them with the good news that Easter is for them, | 9:10
that the Great Physician came to this world | 9:17
for the benefit of the sick and the sinful. | 9:19
So do thou give them patience to await the final victory, | 9:23
light to see the next step | 9:28
and eyes to see thy healing work in every side. | 9:32
And now God, we pray for ourselves. | 9:38
Grant that we may not live out our days | 9:41
in monotonous conformity | 9:43
as though Christ had not been raised from the dead, | 9:45
simply doing the minimum good, | 9:49
saying the tried and average words | 9:51
and behaving as the crowd behaves. | 9:54
Give us wisdom to know thy will for our lives | 9:58
and courage and decisiveness to live by that will. | 10:01
And in whatever circumstances that may place us, | 10:04

Help us to believe in the possibilities | 10:14
of good in our fellow men | 10:15

to call out the best in others | 10:23

as it is recorded for us | 17:23
in the gospel according to Luke 24:1-35. | 17:25
"But on the first day of the week at early dawn, | 17:37
the women went to the tomb, | 17:41
taking the spices which they had prepared." | 17:43
"And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, | 17:47
but when they went in, they did not find the body." | 17:52
"While they were perplexed about this, | 17:58
behold two men stood by them in dazzling apparel." | 18:02
"And as they were frightened and bowed their faces | 18:07
to the ground, the men said to them, | 18:10
'Why do you seek the living among the dead?'" | 18:14
"'He is not here, but he risen'." | 18:20
"'Remember how he told you while he was still in Galilee | 18:25
that the son of man must be delivered | 18:29
into the hands of sinful men and be crucified | 18:31
and on the third day rise?'" | 18:36
"And they remembered his words and returning from the tomb | 18:41
they told all this to the 11 and to all the rest." | 18:45
"Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna | 18:50
and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them | 18:54
who told this to the apostles, | 18:57
but these words seemed to them an idle tale | 19:01
and they did not believe them." | 19:06
"That very day, two of them were going | 19:10
to a village named Emmaus about seven miles from Jerusalem | 19:13
and talking with each other about all these things | 19:18
that had happened." | 19:21
"While they were talking and discussing together, | 19:23
Jesus himself drew near and went with them, | 19:27
but their eyes were kept from recognizing him." | 19:31
"And he said to them, 'What is this conversation | 19:36
which you are holding with each other as you walk?'" | 19:40
"And they stood still, looking sad." | 19:45
"Then one of them named Cleophas answered him, | 19:50
'Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know | 19:55
the things that have happened there in these days?'" | 20:00
"And he said to them, 'What things?'" | 20:05
"And they said to him concerning Jesus of Nazareth | 20:10
who was a prophet mighty indeed and were before God | 20:14
and all the people, | 20:18
and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up | 20:20
to be condemned to death and crucified him, | 20:22
but we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel." | 20:28
"Yes, and besides all this it is now the third day | 20:35
since this happened, | 20:38
moreover some women of our company amazed us." | 20:40
"They were at the tomb early in the morning | 20:44
and did not find his body, | 20:46
and they came back saying that they had even seen | 20:50
a vision of angels who said that he was alive." | 20:52
"Some of those who were with us went to the tomb | 20:58
and found it just as the women had said, | 21:02
but him they did not see." | 21:05
"And he said to them, 'Oh, foolish men and slow of heart | 21:10
to believe all that the prophets have spoken.'" | 21:16
"'Was it not necessary that the Christ | 21:19
should suffer these things and enter into his glory?'" | 21:22
"And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, | 21:26
he interpreted to them in all the scriptures | 21:30
the things concerning himself." | 21:33
"So they drew near to the village to which they were going." | 21:36
"He appeared to be going further but they constrained him | 21:41
saying, 'Stay with us, for it is toward evening | 21:46
and the day is now far spent.'" | 21:51
"So he went in to stay with them." | 21:54
"When he was at table with them, | 21:58
he took the bread and blessed and broke it | 22:01
and gave it to them." | 22:08
"And their eyes were opened and they recognized him | 22:10
and he vanished out of their sight." | 22:15
"They said to each other, did not our hearts burn within us | 22:18
while he talked to us on the road, | 22:23
while he opened to us the scriptures?" | 22:26
"And they rose the same out and returned to Jerusalem." | 22:28
"And they found the 11 gathered together | 22:32
and those who were with them who said, | 22:34
'The Lord has risen indeed and has appeared to Simon.'" | 22:36

Belief in the fundamental idea contained in these words | 38:16
is the primary reason for the existence | 38:22
of the Christian Church. | 38:27
Easter is the cornerstone of our faith. | 38:30
It's message is that Jesus Christ was not holden of death, | 38:37
that the cross was not the sad end of a heroic failure. | 38:44
He is not in the tomb, dead. | 38:52
He is risen. | 38:57 | |
Jesus Christ is alive. | 39:00
Now let us turn back to that first Easter morning | 39:06
and reflect upon the thoughts of the leading characters | 39:10
in the drama of Holy Week. | 39:14
Some men must have been satisfied. | 39:18
The Sadducees and the high priest had outmaneuvered | 39:23
and had done away with the Galilean prophet | 39:29
who was such an ecclesiastical nuisance. | 39:33
Their supremacy was confirmed. | 39:37
And yet in 40 years it was shattered, | 39:42
never to be revived, | 39:50
not even in the present political state of Israel. | 39:52
Pilate the governor could reflect on a job done, | 40:01
well done. | 40:07 | |
The | 40:10 | |
(speaking in foreign language)
the Roman peace had been kept. | 40:12
The hazardous day of the Passover had passed without a riot. | 40:17
Mission accomplished. | 40:23
Now he could go back to Caesarea on the Mediterranean shore, | 40:27
a pleasanter city than Jerusalem for a Roman. | 40:34
Anatole France, in his short story "The Procurator Of Judea" | 40:40
pictures Pontius Pilate in his retirement. | 40:46
Someone asks him if he remembers Jesus of Nazareth. | 40:50
And the last words of the short story are, | 40:59
"Jesus of Nazareth?" | 41:03
"No, I don't remember the name." | 41:08
And today Pilate is remembered primarily | 41:16
if not only, because of Jesus. | 41:20
The Pharisees, at least some of them | 41:26
must have questioned the whole procedure | 41:28
on what came to be known as Monday, Thursday | 41:32
and Good Friday. | 41:35 | |
Jesus was a law breaker, true. | 41:38
He was often hostile to them, | 41:43
he certainly was, | 41:46
and yet certain Pharisees were among his friends. | 41:49
They had warned him that Herod Antipas was asking for him | 41:54
and Jesus had left Galilee for the safer region | 41:59
of Tyre and Sidon. | 42:03
He had supported them against the Sadducees | 42:06
on the matter of belief in the continuance | 42:09
of personal life after death. | 42:12
And never forget this about the Pharisees. | 42:16
Two of their number, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus | 42:19
had helped to bury Jesus. | 42:25
A brave thing to do. | 42:29
Yes, the Pharisees must have been split among themselves. | 42:33
There was another group on which that first Easter dawned, | 42:39
the apostles and the other disciples. | 42:43
They were a sheep without a shepherd. | 42:47
Their master had failed. | 42:52
The two on the way to Emmaus in our scripture lesson | 42:55
put into words their disillusionment. | 42:59
"But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel." | 43:02
Words of shattered expectation, of sad disenchantment. | 43:16
He saved others, himself he could not save. | 43:22
The daydream had become a nightmare. | 43:26

but is risen. | 43:49 | |
What happened exactly? | 43:51
We don't know. | 43:54 | |
The gospel accounts are both confused and contradictory, | 43:57
but one thing is clear. | 44:04
It was firmly, | 44:07 | |
confidently, joyfully, almost surprisingly believed | 44:10
that Jesus was not holden of death. | 44:17
That he was alive again, | 44:21
that he had returned from the grave to his own folk. | 44:23
And that was found satisfactory, adequate. | 44:28
Church and state had not conquered him. | 44:34
Death could not stop him. | 44:39
That is why on Easter morning, we were right | 44:43
to use the | 44:46 | |
(speaking foreign language)
Christ is risen, with the response, | 44:50
(speaking foreign language) | 44:54
He is risen indeed. | 44:57
Now the witness to that fact, | 45:01
to that faith is the fact of the church. | 45:05
However much we may wrangle | 45:09
over the details of the resurrection, | 45:11
to whom he first appeared, where he first appeared, | 45:14
what kind of a body he had, physical or spiritual, | 45:19
the fact of the church is the witness | 45:25
to the confidence that Jesus was not the prisoner of death. | 45:29
The confidence went a step further | 45:36
after the experience known as the Ascension. | 45:39
It was believed that he would return again | 45:43
to dwell with his people. | 45:48
Some believed that this would happen spectacularly | 45:51
at the imminent end of the world. | 45:55
We can read about that in Thessalonians 1 and 2. | 45:58
Others believe that he did return | 46:04
to the individual Christian and to the corporate community | 46:08
of believers in the Holy Spirit. | 46:12
We can read of that in the fourth gospel. | 46:16
The stress in the New Testament is on the living Christ, | 46:20
not on the dead Jesus. | 46:26
The church is established on Easter, not on Good Friday. | 46:30
That is why we worship on the first day of the week, | 46:36
the weekly celebration of the resurrection. | 46:41
That is why Sunday is properly known as the Lord's day. | 46:47
The Lord being Jesus, | 46:54
who was dead and is alive forever more. | 46:58
The great truth of Easter is not the empty tomb | 47:04
or the reanimation of the corpse of the man, Jesus. | 47:10
The great truth is the eternal life of the divine spirit | 47:16
known in and through Jesus, | 47:22
dwelling in the hearts and minds and wills | 47:26
of those who love him. | 47:31
Paul knew that. | 47:33 | |
"I live, not I, Christ liveth in me." | 47:35
For Easter is not an event which happened but once, | 47:45
it is a recurring miracle of the spirit of Jesus | 47:51
escaping from every tomb in which men would bury him | 47:55
to live again in the personal and group lives | 48:01
of grateful, surprised followers. | 48:06
Listen to these words, which Earnest Raymond | 48:10
put into the mouth of Padre Ruderbeck | 48:14
in the novel "Wonder Light". | 48:17
"Christ always comes after a great denial and rejection." | 48:21
"They tried to crucify and bury him once | 48:28
but instead he over spread the world." | 48:32
"Then his own people tried to bury him | 48:36
under medieval formalism and superstition, | 48:39
and he emerged naked in the reformation." | 48:44
450 years ago, this year. | 48:50
In the 18th century, wasn't it? | 48:55
They tried to bury him in a tomb called no enthusiasm | 48:57
and he broke away in the evangelical revival. | 49:03
And out of the hard rock of Calvinism, | 49:08
he rose again in the Catholic revival. | 49:11
For its men's minds that he uses | 49:15
and with a host of men's minds that he comes again. | 49:19
Easters a funny story, | 49:25
but it fits. | 49:29 | |
Paul would say I'm into that. | 49:43
So would Pope John the 23rd. | 49:47
So do we, | 49:51 | |
or we wouldn't be here this morning. | 49:54
This note of Easter hope we share today. | 49:58
We are living in a bad Friday world. | 50:04
Men, women and children are being killed. | 50:11
Ideas which we sincerely believe to be true, lovely | 50:16
and of good report are being mocked, scourged, crucified. | 50:22
We hear again, the clamant voices, "Away with him", | 50:30
"Crucify him", "Not this man, but Barabbas". | 50:35
"We have no king but Cesar". | 50:43
And we, | 50:49 | |
we trusted that it had been he | 50:52
who would have redeemed Israel | 50:57
and through Israel, the world. | 51:01
But Easter says, wait, | 51:07
Give God time. | 51:11 | |
And history says, it seems as if he is risen. | 51:16
Comes in the wake of crucify him. | 51:23
That means that we really live in a good Friday world | 51:27
rather than in a bad Friday world. | 51:34
We live through that Friday | 51:40
in the confidence of Easter Sunday. | 51:43
We are not men and women without hope. | 51:49
