Adeline Chancy, the Secretary of State for Literacy, and Professor Yves Dejean discuss the Secrétairerie d'État à l'Alphabétisation's literacy campaign. Dejean describes in particular Haitian Creole-language initiatives and pedagogy. Chancy describes cooperation with various institutions and organizations, including government ministries, labor unions, grassroots women's groups, and local authorities. They also discuss some members of the ruling class' fear of literacy for the masses, viewing literacy as the path to revolution -- even as they also view it as necessary for the Haiti's modernization.
