  • Jean Dominique explains why he has never celebrated March 4 (the anniversary of his return from exile in 1986), and discusses the current status of journalism and freedom of the press in Haiti. There are many more media outlets now, but many of them lack professional ethics and still others shamelessly defend the killers, criminals, and Macoutes. Dominique denies having personal conflicts with certain newspapers, though he acknowledges that two papers in particular (one published in Haiti, the other in New York) publish lies and manufacture conflicts with him in order to sell more copies. He denounces in particular a newspaper (presumably Le Petit Samedi Soir) that wrote that Dominican journalist Carlos Grullon deserved to die at Ruelle Vaillant at the hands of the CNG because the Dominican Republic killed 20,000 Haitians in 1937. Dominique addresses accusations that he has "flirted with power" by meeting with Henri Namphy; he explains that he accompanied members of the drivers' union to the National Palace to meet with and present their demands to Namphy in October 1986. The newspaper Haïti Progrès has spread false information about Dominique's relations with political leaders. Speaking and meeting with political leaders, whether Namphy, William Régala, Leslie Manigat, or Prosper Avril, is not a flirtation; it is part of Dominique's work as a journalist.
