- | Beloved let us hear the words of the scripture | 0:58 |
as we prepare our hearts for the spiritual feast, | 1:00
which the Lord has put before us and whose guests we are. | 1:04
I am the living bread, which came down from heaven, | 1:12
if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. | 1:18
And the bread which I shall give | 1:22
for the life of the world is my flesh. | 1:25
The cup of blessing, which we bless, | 1:30
is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? | 1:34
The bread which we break, | 1:38
is it not a participation in the body of Christ? | 1:41
Because there is one loaf, | 1:46
we who are many are one body | 1:48
for we all partake of the same loaf. | 1:52
Beloved, let us love one another for love is of God | 1:57
and he who loves is born of God and knows God. | 2:04
In this the love of God was made manifest among us | 2:11
that God sent his only son into the world | 2:14
so that we might live through him. | 2:19
Amen. | 2:25 | |
May we join together our hearts and our voices | 2:28
in the Collect for Purity. | 2:31
Let us pray. | 2:33 | |
Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, | 2:36
all desires known and from whom no secrets are hid, | 2:40
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts | 2:45
by the inspiration of thy holy spirit, | 2:47
that we may perfectly love thee | 2:51
and worthily magnify thy holy name | 2:53
through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 2:56
Amen. | 2:59 | |
Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ said. | 3:02
The first commandment is hear oh, Israel, | 3:06
the Lord our God, the Lord is one | 3:09
and thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart | 3:13
and with all thy soul and with all thy mind | 3:17
and with all thy strength. | 3:20
The second is this, thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself. | 3:23
There is none other commandment greater than these. | 3:28
(indistinct chanting) | 3:33
A new commandment I give unto you that ye love one another, | 3:39
even as I have loved you and that ye also love one another. | 3:46
(indistinct chanting) | 3:53
Almighty God, father of our Lord Jesus Christ, | 4:02
maker of all things, judge of all men, | 4:07
we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, | 4:11
which we from time to time most grievously have committed | 4:15
by thought, word and deed against thy divine majesty | 4:19
provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. | 4:24
We do earnestly repent | 4:29
and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings. | 4:31
The remembrance of them is grievous unto us, | 4:35
have mercy upon us, most merciful father | 4:38
for thy son, our Lord Jesus Christ's sake. | 4:42
Forgive us all that is passed | 4:45
and grant that we may ever hereafter serve | 4:48
and please thee in newness of life | 4:51
to the honor and glory of thy name | 4:54
through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 4:56
Amen. | 4:59 | |
Almighty God, our heavenly father | 5:03
who of thy great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins | 5:06
to all of them that with hearty repentance and true faith, | 5:11
turn unto thee, | 5:14 | |
have mercy upon us, | 5:17
pardon and deliver us from all our sins, | 5:20
confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, | 5:23
and bring us to everlasting life | 5:27
through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 5:29
Oh God, the creator and preserver of all mankind, | 5:35
we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of man | 5:40
that thou wouldst be pleased | 5:44
to make thy ways known unto them, | 5:46
thy saving health unto all nations. | 5:49
More especially we pray for thy holy church universal | 5:52
that it may be so guided and governed by thy good spirit | 5:57
that all who profess and call themselves Christians | 6:01
may be led into the way of truth | 6:04
and hold the faith in unity of spirit, | 6:06
in the bond of peace and in righteousness of life. | 6:11
Finally, we command thy father the goodness, | 6:18
all those who are in any way afflicted or distressed | 6:21
in mind, body or estate that it may please thee to comfort | 6:24
and relieve them according to their several necessities, | 6:29
giving them patience under their suffering | 6:33
and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. | 6:36
And this we ask for Jesus Christ's sake. | 6:41
Amen. | 6:46 | |
Let us hear the word of God | 7:05
as it is contained in the scriptures of the new Testament | 7:08
in the gospel according to St. Luke, | 7:12
the 22nd chapter reading from verses 14 to 23. | 7:15
And when the hour came, | 7:24
Jesus sat a table and the apostles with him. | 7:26
And he said to them, | 7:31
I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover | 7:33
with you before I suffer. | 7:37
But I tell you, I shall not eat it | 7:40
until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God. | 7:45
And he took a cup and when he had given thanks He said, | 7:50
take this and divide it among yourselves | 7:54
for I tell you that from now on | 8:00
I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine | 8:02
until the kingdom of God comes. | 8:05
And he took bread and when he had given thanks He broke it | 8:11
and gave it to them saying, | 8:17
this is my body. | 8:20 | |
But behold, the hand of him who betrays me | 8:24
is with me on the table. | 8:27
For the son of man goes as it has been determined, | 8:31
but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed. | 8:36
And they began to question one another, | 8:43
which of them it was that would do this. | 8:47
Amen and may God bless unto us the reading of his holy word. | 8:53

We celebrate tonight the institution of the Lord's supper, | 9:53
remembering the last meal which Jesus ate with his disciples | 9:58
before he was cruelly done to death. | 10:04
Let us think about him and two of his followers | 10:09
before we break bread together. | 10:15
Did Jesus have any knowledge, any inkling, | 10:20
any anticipation of what might happen to him | 10:24
on the (indistinct). | 10:29
He had failed in Galilee. | 10:32
He had fled that country. | 10:35
He had tackled Jerusalem, but he had wept over that city. | 10:39
There had been no real uprising to support him. | 10:47
And now during the evening meal with his intimate friends, | 10:53
he had shared a loaf with them, | 10:58
distributing it with these strange words. | 11:02
This is my body, which is for you. | 11:06
Whereas Monsignor Knox translates the verse. | 11:13
This is my body on your behalf. | 11:16
Was he conscious of the possibility, | 11:22
the likelihood, the certainty of death? | 11:25
Does one back the ecclesiastical powers | 11:31
and the political authorities | 11:34
and still expect to die in vain? | 11:37
Does the preaching of good news and goodwill | 11:42
inevitably engender indignation? | 11:46
Does the parable of the prodigal son | 11:52
anger the legally righteous? | 11:54
And does the parable of the good Samaritan | 11:59
inflame the racially righteous? | 12:02
It is expedient for you that | 12:08
one man should die for the people | 12:11
said Caiaphas the high priest. | 12:15
Did God agree with Caiaphas? | 12:20
Did Jesus consent? | 12:24
It sometimes takes a death to drive home the message | 12:29
that a life has failed to get across. | 12:33
And so he was crucified on a hill called Golgotha | 12:38
the place of a skull. | 12:42
We don't know exactly where it was | 12:45
or why it was called the place of a skull, | 12:48
but there his body was broken on our behalf. | 12:53
Centuries later on another Friday, | 13:04
two days before another Easter, | 13:08
a man was shot in Fox Theater in Washington | 13:11
and died without uttering a word. | 13:18
The date was April 14th, 1865. | 13:21
The victim was Abraham Lincoln, the president who had just | 13:26
brought his country to the end of a bloody civil war. | 13:29
What kind of a man was he? | 13:35
We know his gospel. | 13:37
He summed it up at Gettysburg. | 13:39
Four score and seven years ago | 13:43
our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation, | 13:45
conceived in Liberty and dedicated to the proposition | 13:52
that all men are created equal. | 13:57
To what end, the government of the people | 14:04
by the people and for the people | 14:10
should not perish from the earth. | 14:14
He was a devout man in an unorthodox fashion. | 14:17
He was a committed man who never believed | 14:22
that he had God in his pocket. | 14:26
He was a man who was well aware | 14:30
that his life might end forcibly. | 14:32
You remember his dream of the dead president | 14:36
laid out in the East room of the White House | 14:40
just a few days before the dream became a nightmare. | 14:44
In fact, read again, Walt Whitman's, O Captain, My Captain | 14:48
or Vachel Lindsay's, Abraham Lincoln Walks At Midnight | 14:55
or Edwin Markham's, Lincoln The Man Of The People, | 15:00
or just remember the Negro mother | 15:03
lifting her baby high in the air | 15:07
as Lincoln's funeral procession passed. | 15:10
With these words, take a long look honey, | 15:14
he died for you. | 15:21 | |
This was his body on our behalf. | 15:25
On another bad Friday, | 15:30
