  • Article from the News and Observer, signed Robert Lilly Gray, regarding Julian Shakespeare Carr, born October 12th, 1845 in Chapel Hill, Orange County. Carr was a North Carolina industrialist and philanthropist, and was instrumental in the founding of Duke University. He was elected a trustee of Trinity College in 1883, and over the course of the decade acted as benefactor and administrator of the struggling institution that was eventually renamed Duke University.
