	newspapers, flyers, placards, for all memories,	4:41

	For the fact that this university,	4:51
	still pays more than lip service to Eruditio et Religio,	4:53
	to knowledge which is linked with reverence,	4:58
	to insight that has a place for piety,	5:02
	to an awe before the universe	5:06
	which may be the beginning of wisdom,	5:09

	For thy self,	5:15
	thy prophets, psalmists and law givers,	5:17
	for Jesus of Nazareth	5:21

	that our graduates shall link learning to their business,	7:13
	shall join wisdom to politics.	7:17
	Shall build religious family life.	7:20
	Shall demonstrate the meaning of idealistic citizenship.	7:22
	We pray now for our university	7:27
	that its faculty and administration	7:30
	may advance truth and right	7:33
	and not reject those who stand for a Christian conscience.	7:36
	We pray for our nation	7:42
	that it may have vital unity,	7:44
	creative brotherhood,	7:47
	and peaceful relations with other peoples.	7:49
	Deliver it from demagogues	7:52
	and save it from the schemes of those	7:55
	who put self-interest above the good of the whole.	7:58

	First off the graduating class,	8:57
	wish on this occasion to make a meaningful contribution	8:59
	to the American Friends Service Committee	9:03
	for use in their hospitals and clinics in Vietnam	9:06
	which are binding up the wounds	9:10
	of those who were injured in the war.	9:12
	And they have asked me to announce	9:15
	that boxes will be available,	9:17
	outside each of the exits immediately following this service	9:19
	in which those who wish to do so,	9:23
	may place their contributions.	9:26

	Members of the graduation classes,	14:39
	I salute you and your families and friends.	14:43
	You have gathered in the chapel	14:50
	for your second last university assembly at Duke.	14:52
	Before you enter the real world	14:59
	as the Chronicle regularly calls it.	15:03
	You've consciously prepared yourself to some extent	15:08
	for positions in that world.	15:13
	You have more than a smattering of Eruditio,	15:16
	learning one half of the Duke motto.	15:22
	What of the other half?	15:27
	Religio, reverence.	15:29
	The university still bows to this Latin word.	15:34
	The proof is a baccalaureate service	15:39
	for how much more longer? I wonder.	15:44
	But what do we make of that passage	15:49
	from the gospel according to Luke	15:52
	which was read as the morning lesson.	15:56
	Let's think of this incident in the life of Jesus,	16:00
	no matter how low our Christology is.	16:04
	That is our estimate of the prophet from Nazareth.	16:09
	Jesus was a distinguished enough nuisance as a teacher	16:15
	to have church and state unite to execute him.	16:21
	To get rid of him legally.	16:27
	Perhaps because of that,	16:31
	he shooting triggers and still be what adhering.	16:33
	A man approach Jesus with a request.	16:40
	Teacher, bid my brother divide the inheritance with me.	16:44
	Jesus answered, "Man, who made me a judge	16:53
	or divider over you."	17:00
	Then he added, "Your problem is covetousness.	17:05
	The desire for possessions."	17:10
	Let me tell you a story.	17:14
	About a man who had so much	17:18
	and so many of this worlds goods	17:21
	that he decided to rebuild the barns,	17:25
	the storage spaces on his farm.	17:28
	Then he said to his soul, take it easy.	17:31
	You're provided for.	17:36
	Eat, drink, be merry.	17:39
	And God said to him,	17:43
	"You fool, you're gonna die tonight.	17:45
	What about your possessions then?"	17:50
	And this anecdote is followed by	17:54
	the most extravagant statements	17:57
	about being not anxious.	18:01
	God feeds the birds,	18:05
	won't he feed you?	18:08
	Lilies are better dressed than Solomon in all his glory.	18:11
	You will have enough to wear.	18:16
	Why don't you make up your mind about	18:20
	what is really important.	18:22
	What is it that's really important?	18:26
	The reign of God?	18:28
	Your relation to God?	18:30
	Get that right.	18:32
	Other things will fall into place.	18:33
	Now what are you gonna do with this?	18:38
	You who have trained to be teachers and engineers	18:41
	and preachers and psychologists	18:45
	and doctors and nurses and foresters	18:49
	and researchers of all types.	18:52
	Jesus advice is for the birds.	18:56
	The birds God feeds	19:02
	and the lilies God clothes.	19:05
	Now some New Testament scholars, good ones,	19:09
	tell us that Jesus expected	19:12
	the end of the world in his lifetime.	19:15
	Therefore, this kind of teaching	19:19
	was part of an interim method.	19:23
	An interim method before the world came to an end.	19:27
	Probably with a bang rather than with a whimper.	19:32
	Well, it has been an elongated interim.	19:37
	19 and a half centuries.	19:42
	So what do we do in the real world?	19:45
	Good old Chronicle.	19:49
	In the meantime,	19:50
	in the real world where nations prepare for war	19:52
	and races are at enmity	19:57
	and you and I get ulcers.	20:00
	Other New Testament scholars also good ones.	20:05
	Tell us that what Jesus is offering here	20:10
	is the absolute ethic	20:14
	which will have its full validity	20:18
	only in the Kingdom of God,	20:21
	only in the Kingdom of God.	20:25
	Now there's a how do you do.	20:27
	What about us who claim	20:31
	to some degree to be followers of Jesus	20:33
	but who recognize that we are citizens of two kingdoms.	20:37
	The Kingdom of God and the kingdom of this world.	20:43
	And the two are hardly in harmony	20:48
	with any regularity.	20:52
	What do we do then?	20:55
	We might like to do what a Scottish minister did	20:58
	in the reign of the Stuarts.	21:01
	He reminded the king of something the king had forgotten.	21:04
	"Your Majesty, there are,	21:10
	(speaks in foreign language)	21:13
	two Kings in Scotland.	21:15
	Jesus Christ and yourself.	21:19
	And one is superior.	21:22
	Maybe that's what some students	21:27
	have been saying to Washington	21:29
	but a possible consequence of this double loyalty,	21:33
	maybe a split personality	21:37
	as one tries to serve God and mammon.	21:40
	Is there no other way to understand the passage? Oh yes.	21:45
	Remember that Jesus was a Jew	21:49
	an unofficial rabbi.	21:52
	Now a Jew is practical.	21:56
	For example the law.	22:00
	And a Jew is picturesque.	22:03
	For example, the Psalms and the parables.	22:06
	Jesus was a story teller	22:10
	with the intensity and vocabulary of a poet.	22:14
	Therefore, he must not be taken literally,	22:19
	just seriously.	22:26
	A man who talks of hunting for a speck of sawdust	22:29
	in your brother's eye,	22:34
	where it was a plank sticking out of your own,	22:36
	he's got much more affinity	22:40
	with Ogden Nash and P.G. Wodehouse	22:42
	than he does with Aquinas and Calvin.	22:46
	At least stylistically.	22:50
	He would enjoy "Fiddler on the Roof",	22:54
	much more than the shorter catechism	22:56
	of the Presbyterian church.	22:58
	(congregation laughs)	23:00
	A poetic storyteller should be taken seriously.	23:04
	So what is Jesus still trying to seed to us	23:10
	19 centuries later through this passage from Luke?	23:13
	Jesus is not declining the needs for judges and dividers	23:18
	but he's asking that there be more to life	23:26
	than the anxiety which makes material possessions	23:30
	and financial success	23:35
	the end of life.	23:38
	They are means to an end but not the end.	23:40
	For Jesus, God and the things of God,	23:45
	his centrality, his majesty,	23:48
	his kingdom, his grace and love, were central.	23:50
	Moreover, they gave meaning to food	23:55
	and clothing and work and family.	23:59
	Jesus brought a message of relaxation.	24:04
	A primary ingredient of faith.	24:09
	This look and passage taken literally,	24:13
	is a piece of extravagant romanticism.	24:18
	Millions of birds die every year.	24:22
	Lilies fade, grass is thrown into the oven.	24:27
	But taken seriously,	24:34
	wouldn't it be wise to have a spiritual point of view,	24:37
	a confidence that come hell or high water,	24:42
	all maybe well	24:46
	that even death is a door not a blank wall.	24:48
	A man who knows that sits lightly to life.	24:56
	He's not the lazy, but he's at ease.	25:01
	He may be strenuous, but he isn't tense.	25:05
	He knows how to laugh	25:09
	and when to laugh.	25:11
	And there are chuckles at the heart of him.	25:14
	A man like Abraham Lincoln.	25:18
	You know it's a hundred years	25:21
	since we had a man in the White House	25:23
	who was intentionally humorous.	25:26
	(congregation laughs)	25:29
	And it doesn't look as if there'd be much change	25:36
	in the fall.	25:38
	(congregation laughs)	25:39
	And like Jesus, Lincoln was gotten rid off too.	25:44
	It's wise, that words, ideas should become flesh.	25:51
	That's how a word,	25:55
	an idea is best understood and appreciated	25:56
	by ordinary folk like us.	25:59
	So let me share with you	26:03
	an almost contemporary incarnation of our texts.	26:05
	I made him the central figure	26:10
	of the first baccalaureate sermon,	26:12
	which I preached at Duke back in 1949.	26:14
	And here he is again in the last baccalaureate sermon	26:20
	which I shall preach at Duke.	26:25
	He's been my constant mentor	26:28
	since I heard him lecture at Glasgow University	26:30
	way back when I was a freshmen in high school.	26:33
	He was a world authority on the civil war in America.	26:39
	Though we'd never been in the United States.	26:44
	He was a son of the Scottish man.	26:47
	Born in 1875, almost a hundred years ago,	26:50
	John Buchan by name.	26:54
	He died as Governor General of Canada.	26:59
	In 1940 titled Lord Tweedsmuir.	27:03
	I met his widow, the dowager Lady Tweedsmuir	27:07
	at Oxford back in 1960.	27:11
	We write each other regularly.	27:15
	She knows that today,	27:17
	I am again sharing her husband	27:20
	with a Duke University congregation.	27:23
	I'll touch only on the high spots of his life.	27:25
	John Buchan entered Glasgow University in 1892.	27:29
	And while an undergraduate,	27:33
	edited the essays of Francis, Lord Bacon,	27:37
	Lord Chancellor of England,	27:42
	philosopher and scientist,	27:44
	the first of the 68 books which Buchan wrote.	27:47
	He graduated and moved on to Oxford University,	27:55
	graduating there in 1899	27:58
	as a second year student, a sophomore.	28:02
	He was chosen by the authorities of his college, Brasenose,	28:06
	to write the volume on Brasenose	28:12
	in the series of Oxford College histories.	28:16
	No other author was less than the rank of Fellow.	28:20
	He also made "Who's Who" 1898 edition, age 23	28:26
	because of the editorials he was writing,	28:34
	not for the local Chronicle,	28:37
	but for the London newspapers.	28:39
	He listed his occupation as undergraduate.	28:43
	The fathers of many of his classmates	28:48
	were listed in that volume of "Who's Who".	28:52
	He was a barrister and a journalist	28:57
	from 1899 to 19, one hundreds.	28:59
	One of Lord Milner's young men	29:02
	in the rehabilitation of South Africa	29:05
	after the Boer War 19 103.	29:08
	He returned to London married,	29:11
	joined the publishing firm of Thomas Nelson,	29:14
	as editor, literary advisor,	29:16
	and author in 1907	29:18
	and stayed with the firm for 20 years,	29:21
	resigning as a director.	29:23
	He failed, you may be relieved to hear this,	29:25
	in his first attempt to become a member of parliament	29:29
	in 1911, though all the poachers	29:33
	in the Scottish Border district voted for him	29:38
	as he had actually been arrested for poaching salmon.	29:42
	(congregation laughs)	29:45
	When the First World War broke out,	29:48
	he had a variety of jobs.	29:49
	He began a history of the world war	29:52
	which he completed in 24 parts.	29:54
	Later reedited in eight volumes.	29:57
	He was the liaison officer	29:59
	between the British and American armies in France.	30:00
	As a change of pace,	30:03
	he began to write thrillers.	30:05
	Like the "Thirty-Nine Steps",	30:07
	"Greenmantle", "Mr Standfast".	30:09
	After the war, he was a country gentleman in Oxford	30:12
	but he kept open house for everybody and anybody	30:16
	on Sunday afternoons.	30:18
	He published a volume,	30:22
	fiction or biography or essays or poetry,	30:23
	every year from 1922 to 1936.	30:28
	He was Member of Parliament	30:32
	for the Scottish Universities, 1927 to 35	30:34
	and in his first speech in the House of Commons,	30:38
	attacked the conservative party	30:42
	of which he was a member.	30:44
	Punch the so-called, humorous English weekly,	30:47
	commented that Mr. Bacon in his maiden speech,	30:52
	in most un-maidenly fashion bit the hand that fed him.	30:56
	In 1935, he was appointed Governor General of Canada,	31:02
	where the title Lord Tweedsmuir of Elsfield.	31:07
	He was the most beloved Governor General Canada has had.	31:11
	Canadians, British and French,	31:17
	all kinds of folk respected,	31:20
	trusted, and loved him.	31:24
	He died in 1940 of cerebral thrombosis	31:27
	and one of our own duke surgeons	31:30
	then a senior resident at McGill scrubbed for the operation.	31:34
	If John Buchan had lived,	31:40
	he might have become ambassador to the United States.	31:42
	He loved this country.	31:46
	Would you like to know more about him?	31:49

	of our chemistry department,	31:55
	there are eight shelves of Buchan	31:58
	in the Rare Book Room of the Perkins Library.	32:01
	But you said to me, sir, hold your horses.	32:06
	What you've told us about John Buchan	32:11
	is a sound example of one who was a successful referee.	32:14
	An arbiter in law, business, government.	32:19
	He was just what Jesus refused to be.	32:26
	A judge and divider.	32:31
	What about the seeking of God's kingdom	32:34
	and the discarding of anxiety?	32:39
	Good question.	32:43
	Here's the answer.	32:45
	Despite the busyness	32:47
	and the success of his variegated career,	32:49
	John Buchan sat lightly to life.	32:54
	To the things of this world.	32:59
	Now, why?	33:01
	His life in writing has reveal two reasons.	33:04
	First, he was a Scott, an honest Scott.	33:08
	There's a difference.	33:12
	(congregation laughs)	33:14
	He told one of his aids	33:17
	that Scotland had produce more,	33:21
	very good second class people	33:25
	than any other country.	33:29
	But very few of the first class.	33:32
	John Buchan had aspired to something	33:39
	higher than Governor General of Canada.	33:43
	Perhaps a seat in the cabinet.	33:45
	Had enjoyed his public service	33:49
	but there was always a but.	33:52
	So he refused to let the world affairs,	33:55
	the real world be too much with him, late and soon,	33:59
	he cultivated the other side of his nature	34:05
	which was his inheritance as a son of a Scottish man.	34:08
	He was a man of God.	34:14
	He never wore his heart on his sleeve	34:17
	though he was particular about the duties demanded	34:20
	and the responsibilities expected of such a person.	34:23
	Here are his comments on two of the most distinguished men	34:27
	whom he admired most in British politics.	34:30
	One Lord Holden, enjoyed the various comforts,	34:34
	vouchsafe to us in this melancholy veil.	34:40
	Good food, good wine, good talk.	34:44
	He was devoted to his friends	34:50
	and happy in their society	34:52
	but he always seemed to sit loose	34:55
	to the things of time.	35:00
	When friends failed him,	35:03
	he had no reproaches.	35:04
	He bore unjust attacks and popular distrust	35:07
	with a noble magnanimity.	35:11
	He lived his life	35:13
	as one who had a continuing vision of the unseen.	35:16
	And of the other, Lord Grey, he wrote,	35:23
	more than any man I know,	35:26
	he possessed his soul.	35:30
	That was said of a man	35:34
	who sources of happiness had vanished one by one.	35:36
	He lost a beloved wife.	35:41
	He saw his work as a peacemaker close	35:44
	in the bloodiest of wars, World War I.	35:47
	His eyesight and his general health failed.	35:51
	His country home was burned down.	35:54
	His intimate friends died before their time.	35:57
	A second marriage gave him only short life comfort	36:01
	for it soon ended with his wife's death.	36:04
	It seems that all he did possess was his soul	36:07
	but it was enough.	36:13
	John Buchan too possess this soul.	36:15
	Sat loose to the things of time.	36:19
	The things of time were important	36:22
	but not ultimate.	36:25
	He was a Calvinist	36:28
	though a reformed one, thank God to the end.	36:30
	If you would asked him what single word described him.	36:35
	He might well have chosen Pilgrim.	36:37
	One who journeys in an alien land.	36:42
	A wayfarer, a sojourner.	36:46
	In the inner circle of his special books was,	36:50
	Bunyan's Pilgrim Progress.	36:53
	The American title of Buchan's autobiography	36:56
	is appropriately "Pilgrim's Way".	36:59
	He might well have said words	37:04
	he ascribed to a contemporary	37:06
	whom he admired, hope and dream.	37:07
	But if you're wise, do not look for too much.	37:13
	This world is a bridge to Passover	37:19
	not to build upon.	37:24
	He had a great love of neighbor,	37:29
	all kinds of neighbors,	37:31
	especially the young and the old,	37:32
	in politics and out of it.	37:35
	He told a financially strapped young student	37:37
	who needed a typewriter,	37:40
	meet me at Paddington Station in London tomorrow	37:42
	at such and such a time.	37:46
	I'll have a typewriter for you.	37:48
	The student was there.	37:51
	So was Buchan.	37:53
	In court dress, on route to a levy at Buckingham Palace	37:55
	with a typewriter tucked underneath his arm.	38:02
	His chauffeur Amos Webb	38:07
	is buried next to him in Elsfield, near Oxford	38:09
	and the inscription in his tombstone is,	38:14
	Amos Webb, the friend of Lord Tweedsmuir for 20 years.	38:17
	His servant was his friend.	38:25
	A pilgrim, man of many friends,	38:30
	man who kept God at the center of his life.	38:34
	Do you know how John Buchan defined an atheist?	38:36
	A man with no invisible means of support.	38:40
	Man with no invisible means of support.	38:49
	He needed that support.	38:52
	He found it.	38:54
	His son said that only twice in Canada,	38:56
	did he see the light go out to his father's eyes.	39:01
	Once when endorsing a death warrant	39:05
	and when signing Canada's declaration of war in 1939.	39:12
	Gentlemen of the graduating classes,	39:19
	wouldn't you like to be somewhat Buchanish?	39:22
	Ladies of the graduating classes each of you,	39:27
	wouldn't you enjoy having someone	39:30
	like John Buchan as a husband?	39:32
	What would it really be like?	39:36
	Well, perhaps he pictured himself in a poem,	39:38
	which he named "Fisher Jamie".	39:43
	I would read it to you	39:46
	except that you wouldn't understand it.	39:48
	It's written in a braid Scots dialect	39:51
	as thick as Robert Burns.	39:56
	So let me just give you a paraphrase.	39:59
	Jamie is dead,	40:02
	killed in the war.	40:05
	He's in heaven	40:08
	and quite unhappy sitting on the edge of a cloud,	40:10
	playing a harp.	40:15
	He had no ear for music.	40:17
	(congregation laughs)	40:20
	He finally summons up enough nerve	40:22
	to approach Saint Peter and the other apostles	40:24
	and offers to swap his harp and his crown	40:28
	for a rod and some fishing tackle.	40:33
	They understand, they'd been fishermen themselves.	40:37
	(congregation laughs)	40:42
	But Jamie doesn't want to fish legally.	40:45
	He always had a poaching whim	40:50
	and the last verses of the poem,	40:54
	pictured him sneaking down a woody lane in heaven	40:57
	with the celestial FBI on his track	41:02
	because he had caught a salmon	41:07
	probably from God's private preserves	41:11
	with a fly made from the feathers	41:15
	on the wings of the cherubin.	41:19
	Now Jesus would understand that and chuckle.	41:23
	Jaime like Buchan would have been a man	41:28
	after his own heart.	41:31
	For Jamie was sitting lightly to other Orthodox heaven.	41:33
	Maybe as lightly as his author did	41:39
	to the Orthodox world.	41:44
	John Buchan is a man for both places.	41:46
	He is for me.	41:50
	A man for all seasons.	41:52
	I commend him to you.	41:56
	Put a closing prayer.	41:58
	Let me just wish for you out loud	42:00
	that the good Lord will hold you close	42:04
	in the hollow of his hands, amen.	42:08
