Summary: Manuscript copy of Warren County Court reports regarding the "[apprehension and delivery] of a negro man named Felix who said he belonged to Wm. Boxdell of Bedford County, Tennessee". Felix, "aged about 22 years", was originally "committed to the jail of said county [Warren County] as a runaway slave on the 29th day of October 1862 and it appearing to the satisfaction of the court that said negro Felix has been advertised as required by law by said jailer and further that said negro has not been claimed by his owner". He was sold to Dr. J.F. Kembley for "six hundred & fifty dollars" on the "11 day of May 1863". The earliest report is dated "April term 1863"; the latest has a postscript in red ink dated "June 28, 1866". Several items document expenses brought to the Warren County Court by the county jailer related to the advertising, housing, and clothing of Felix. A report from the "May term 1864" also references "Franck, who said he belonged to Wm. Kemble of Davidson County, Tennessee" and "Charles, who said he belonged to Wm. Ramsey of Warren County, Tennessee".
William Boxdell of Bedford County, Tennessee does not appear in the 1850 or 1860 U.S. Federal Census or the 1850 or 1860 U.S. Federal Census Slave Schedules.
Title devised by cataloger.
Rectos of 7 reports have red revenue stamps ("Int. Rev. Agreement") with portrait of George Washington and the number 5; all are initialed "J.H.R. [that is, James H. Rose]" and dated June 4, 1864.
All reports originally signed by James H. Rose, the Warren County Clerk; one report originally signed by S.S. Potter, the jailer of Warren County.
