Barren County Court order requiring sheriff to sell Stephen, a self-liberated man, 1862 :manuscript copy.

Summary: Copy of an order from the Barren County Court issued during the "Decr. Call Term 1862". The order documents the comments of the Barren County jailor, who "has in said jail a negro maned [sic] named Stephen, and that he has regularly had said negro advertised for six months as the law requires". The Court ordered Stephen be appraised by A. Wooten and P.N. Leslie and required that the "valuation [be] reported". The Court further ordered that "the sheriff of this county will sell said slave at the court house in this county, on the 3rd Monday of next March, it being county court day". The order outlines conditions of the auction and terms of financing for the re-enslavement of Stephen. An addendum on verso states that Stephen was sold "on the 16th day of March at the court house door in Glasgow" to "D.B.
