Abstract:
Sir Percy Lyham Loraine (1880-1961), was the 12th Baronet of Kirk Harle, Northumberland, and a British diplomat. After joining the Diplomatic Service in 1904, Loraine was stationed in Istanbul, Turkey, for three years before transfer to Iran, Greece, Egypt, and other locations. The collection includes correspondence concerning diplomatic matters in Turkey and the surrounding area (1906-1909, 1929, 1935?, 1938) and a detailed narrative journal by Loraine relating to Egyptian activity on the Turkish border near Akaba (Aqabah), 1905-1906.

Background

Scope and content:

The collection includes correspondence concerning diplomatic matters in Turkey and the surrounding area (1906-1909, 1929, 1935?, 1938). Chiefly letters to Percy Lyham Loraine from fellow diplomats including George Lloyd and Gerald Fitzmaurice, and some letters and drafts of letters from Loraine to colleagues in the foreign service. Also included is a detailed narrative journal by Loraine relating to Egyptian activity on the Turkish border near Akaba (Aqabah), 1905-1906. Letters from Loraine to his wife (1929, 1935? and 1938) include observations about Turkey, the Balkan Conference, Romania, Germany, Austria, Japan, Churchill, and Ataturk's illness.

The "Roma" notebook, dated 1904-1960, is a hand-bound vellum volume inscribed to Loraine from "Valerie." This item was acquired separately from the remainder of the collection and includes some recorded entries and collected sayings by Loraine over a period of several decades in the mid-twentieth century.

The Percy Lyham Loraine Papers were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a purchase in 1998.

Addition 2022-0022 ("Roma" notebook) was acquired as a purchase from John Atkins in 2022.
